HOW CAN YOU TELL? One of the ways the Spirit is constantly breathing new life into the Church is in the practice of spiritual direction. In addition to our personal prayer, spiritual directors can provide support for discerning the promptings of the Spirit in our lives. Benedictines, Dominicans, and Jesuits are known for their work in spiritual direction and in training others as directors. By now the Church is blessed with any number of priests, sisters, and lay people who help others discern and respond with the strength and dedication required to follow Jesus, wherever the journey may take us. © J. We extend our sympathy to the families and friends of Dorothy Hejduk, mother of Art Hejduk, Jr., of Mary Postlethwait, mother of Kathy Gray, and of Wayne Marik, husband of Judy, who all recently passed away. May our Lord comfort these families in their time of mourning and may Dorothy, Mary, and Wayne experience the everlasting life which Jesus promised. STEWARDSHIP WAY OF LIFE

St. Paul reminds us that Jesus sets us free so that we can serve one another, share our gifts and promote God’s work here on earth to glorify His name and not honor ourselves.

We welcome Addison Lynn Fenwick, great granddaughter of Barb Moore, who became a member of our faith by being baptized on Sunday, June 23, 2019. We congratulate the family, godparents, and friends

of Addy. Let us pledge our prayers and support to help her grow strong in her faith.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Processions are life’s journey distilled. We move with companions, aware that Christ accompanies us, as we move to the altar for Communion or to the font for baptism, or carry a loved one to a place of rest. In Europe, the season of pilgrimage is beginning now, and tens of thousands of people are moving by foot on well-worn paths. Some take as long as six weeks to walk the last few hundred miles of the medieval pilgrimage route to the Shrine of St. James the Apostle in Compostella, in northern Spain. Those who make the journey by foot, hiking, or by bicycle, have a kind of passport stamped at villages and monasteries on the road. When they present this document at the cathedral, they are given the emblem of a pilgrim, the scallop shell of St. James. High over their heads at Mass, a huge botafumero twirls clouds of sweet incense through the cathedral. Cynics say it is to mask the odor of smelly feet. The pilgrims know better. Seeing through the clouds the happy faces of those they met along the road, they recognize a foretaste of the welcome into heaven, and the joy of meeting loved ones in the Kingdom of God.

TRAVELING? It can be difficult for Catholics to find a Mass when traveling or when it is not practical to attend their regular parishes. Dial 1-800-Mass-Times or visit https://masstimes.org for information for the churches closest to your destination. Information includes phone number, address, and Mass schedule. Information is available for all U.S. parishes.

OUR DIOCESAN NEWSPAPER The Catholic Exponent is the official newspaper of the Diocese of Youngstown and an award-winning member of the Catholic Press Association. Published every other Friday, it provides “a Catholic Window on the World,” offering news, features and commentary at the diocesan, national and international levels. They also publish special sections on topics of interest to their readers and advertisers. Did you know that the parish is responsible for paying for every subscript ion for our parishioners? Please support this expense by using your green Special Contribution Envelope included in your packet. If you would like a change in your subscription, please contact Kathi at 330-274-2253 or [email protected].

CARE NOTES AVAILABLE Please feel free to pick up “Care Notes” in the Narthex. These pamphlets provide information on various topics that may help you or someone you know that is experiencing difficulty in their life.

DIRECTORY NEWS Many of you are anxious to receive your new Parish Directory. Please know that this will take some time. After submitting our activity pages & overall layout, the proof has to be approved (3 week process). When Lifetouch receives final approval, it takes 3-5 weeks for our directories to be printed. So, that means late summer/early fall arrival. Watch for news on how to get copies then. Thank you to everyone who took part in this new directory. We look forward to seeing the final result!

MANY HOURS OF VOLUNTEER TIME go into making St. Joe’s Ox Roast Fair one of the best events of the area. It is a great opportunity to meet your fellow parishioners and community people while serving your parish. Offer a few hours or more by signing up in the Narthex or simply contact the chair (complete list on back). Parishioners, their families & friends are encouraged to lend a hand during this wonderful, community event.

Set-Up/Take-Down > Begins Mon., July 8. There are plenty of tasks to go around—simply come to the fairgrounds Mon.-Thur., 6:00 p.m. to dark. From Tues., July 16 until the start of the Fair, there are many folks here ALL DAY. Coordinated by Austin Anderson & John Kruis, your help is needed to put up booths and fencing, clean refrigerators, bring out supplies, and much more. Electrician Don Engelhart also gets into action. Don’t forget take-down & litter patrol beginning Mon. morning after the Fair & evenings until it’s all done.

Ox Roasts are wrapped in muslin Tues. & the cooked beef is then sliced beginning at 8:30 a.m. Wed. & Thur. Geovanni Valdez coordinates our slicing. Experienced adults are needed to help slice beef and some strong, young individuals are needed to load bags of sliced beef into refrigerator trucks.

Distribution > Donny & Cathy Sherbondy are looking for some energetic folks to help get all the supplies out to the booths. A great opportunity for high school students to earn service hours. Help is needed 9:30 a.m. until Noon each morning of the Fair days and of course during Fair hours especially the late night re-stock hours.

Ox Pits > Ron Kotkowski & crew will share the secrets of how to roast thousands of pounds of beef. Pits are fired up beginning Tues., July 16, for batch #1 & #2 (of 3).

Ride Tickets > If you could use air-conditioned comfort & lots of smiles, offer Ruth Skocdopole some time working at the Midway Ride Ticket Booth.

Raffle Tickets & 50/50 > If you enjoy meeting new people, this is the spot for you. Kathy Gray has stepped up to chair this year & welcomes you. Lori Duriak and her crew handle the 50/50.

Cash Office > Karen Schulz is taking over this important area and could use a few detail oriented folks.

Parking > Russ Rennecker with the Crestwood Youth Wrestling group do an excellent job organizing the parking.

Tractor & Truck Pulls > This crowd pleaser could always use more parishioner involvement. Lend a hand to Tim Rooth if you enjoy these events.

T-Shirts, Etc. > A brightly colored booth near the Cake Booth is headed by Karen & Dan Kuntzman with t’s, tote bags, mugs & coloring books. Call them to lend a hand.

Corn Dogs/Funnel Cakes > Kathy Maretka & Valerie Waite welcome volunteers for this very popular booth.

Dining Hall & Kitchen > The Sullivans are looking for older students & adults to help with the serving line. Students may volunteer to serve in the Dining Hall as well as adult hosts/hostesses through Rich Krofcheck.

The Ravenna office of Catholic Charities serving Portage and stark counties will once again be collecting school supplies to help Portage County families who are in need to prepare for the upcoming school year. Last year, with the help of many generous donors, this agency

FREEDOM TO WORSHIP On this day of the national celebration of our Nation's independence you are encouraged to celebrate 10:00 a.m. Mass at St. Joe’s. Participating in the Eucharist on Independence Day is an excellent way to let freedom, God’s holy freedom, ring in our hearts. As we celebrate let us remember to pray that God will strengthen and bless America and make our nation a haven of liberty and justice for all — born and unborn.

As we gather with family and friends this 4th of July to celebrate our nation’s independence, be sure to say a prayer for the millions throughout the world who have never tasted the freedoms that we enjoy in America, especially the freedom to practice our faith publicly. May you and your family have a safe and fun-filled holiday this week.

ARE YOU REGISTERED? St. Joseph warmly welcomes new parishioners and seasonal visitors. Please let us know how we can serve you. We invite you to participate in our activities, become involved in our Parish Ministries, and encourage you to register as soon as possible. If you have not “formally” registered with the Parish Office,

please take a moment to introduce yourself. Simply drop a welcome envelope in the collection basket, contact us by phone (330-274-2253) or e-mail ([email protected]), or stop by the Parish Office during business hours. A registration packet will be prepared for you to pick up at the Mass you attend. We look forward to meeting you!

We welcome the following families who have registered with us over the last several months.

Vickie Gardner Holly & John Marik-Toke, Nick & Sam Steve & Laura Radcliff Mark & Ruth Brown, Alex & Zach
