Father Ron’s Corner
Happy 65
th
Anniversary! St. Joseph Parish was founded on
13 April 1949 and over these last 65 years our parish has
experienced much growth and change. It is exciting that we
celebrate our anniversary on Palm Sunday weekend. The
pastoral council will help facilitate some celebrations during
our 65
th
anniversary year. I will keep you posted as plans are
made. Please email me any suggestions and I will pass them
along.
Holy Week is an essential part of Faith and Liturgical
life. We begin Holy Week with Palm/Passion
Sunday. Before Vatican Council II, the church re-instituted
the ancient liturgies of Holy Week. They also included the
reading of the Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ on Palm
Sunday so that the faithful would – on a Sunday – hear the
scriptural account of our Lord’s Passion. That is why we
now call Palm Sunday: “Palm Sunday of the Lord's
Passion.“ We use the solemn entrance at all the Masses
where we begin the Liturgy with the Gospel of Jesus’
triumphal entry into Jerusalem.
I cannot over-state how important the Masses of the Paschal
Triduum are. The “three days” are Friday, Saturday and
Sunday but begin with the Jewish tradition of vigil, or
beginning at sunset the night before which is Holy
Thursday. The four liturgical celebrations of Holy Thursday,
Good Friday, Easter Vigil and Easter Sunday are looked
upon as one liturgy spanning over the three days. Each one
celebrates an aspect of the Paschal Mystery (Dying &
Rising) in which we participate day in and day out, and
which we celebrate each Sunday, but most intensely during
Holy Week’s Triduum Celebrations. So please make plans
to join us.
Once again, Happy Anniversary and many blessings this
Holy Week.
Sincerely,
Fr. Ron
