PASTOR’S CORNER What is mercy? May we ponder the meaning as the Risen Christ and the Holy Spirit want to continue to teach us, in a world that is desperately in need of our continuous acts of kindness, love, forgiveness and mercy. Divine mercy is not so much a pious exercise of meditation and prayer as it is an act and gift of God. He sends us forth as His instruments of love and peace. Our Savior, Jesus, the Risen Christ, appears before the first disciples who are full of feelings of fear, doubt, discouragement, abandonment and guilt because of betrayal. Christ’s first word to them is peace, not expressing any anger or hostility. Christ shows mercy in a radical way that grants mercy, forgiveness and His unconditional healing love. Christ is not an isolationist. He comes to the aid of all of us. The Risen Christ never abandons but continues to reach out with love and gives us the grace to build bridges of mercy for our entire human family throughout the world. Mercy is a bridge that connects us to one another and to God. It builds no walls or barriers to prevent the sharing of gifts for the common good of God’s entire human family.

—Fr. Ed Stafford

BISHOP’S APPEAL FOR CATHOLIC CHARITIES AND CHURCH Your generosity and support for the Bishop’s Appeal helps to change lives . . . one family at a time. As of March 27, we have 111 households contributing $29,501.00 in support of the 2018 Bishop’s Appeal — that’s 93% of our goal of $31,601.00. Bishop Murry has approved a 25% rebate to all parishes that exceed their goal (in cash received) for the 2018 collection. To make your gift to the 2018 Appeal online, fill out a commitment envelope or visit www.doy.org.

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT All that we are and all that we have is a gift from God! Think of your family, your friends, your talents, your abilities and your money – these are all gifts from God! We aren’t really owners of anything, we are merely “stewards” of the gifts God has blessed us with.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Sometimes children acquire nicknames in childhood that stalk them through adulthood: “Pinky,” “Boo-boo,” and the like. This Sunday was once called “Low Sunday,” a step down from Easter glory, and an unfortunate nickname since Easter rejoicing goes on for fifty days. Traditionally this is the day when the newly baptized put away their white baptismal robes and returned to their everyday life after a week of intense celebration. Of course, the goal was to take up everyday duties with a very new point of view. A long title for the day was Dominica in albis deposito, or “The Lord’s Day for Putting Away the Albs,” so no wonder the nickname “Low Sunday” arose. In the old calendar it was also called “Quasimodo Sunday,” after the first word of the opening chant, Quasimodo geniti infantes, or “As newborn infants,” a reference to the newly baptized taken from the Epistle of Peter. Victor Hugo’s bell-ringing hero in The Hunchback of Notre Dame was abandoned as an infant on the threshold of the cathedral of Paris on Low Sunday, 1467, and named “Quasimodo” for the feast.

The Parish Community of St. Joseph’s will celebrate the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick the weekend of April 21/22 after each of the Masses. This sacrament (like all sacraments) is a community celebration. It is for those with sickness whether it be physically, mentally or spiritually. Anointing is not a sacrament for those only who are at the point of death but is intended for those asking for the healing touch of Christ. Today we are all aware that tensions, fear and anxiety not only affect our mind but

our body as well. Anyone wishing to receive the Sacrament of Anointing is welcome to remain after Mass for this special blessing.
