PALM SUNDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD

April 9, 2017

SEEING CHRIST CLEARLY We start today looking through the portals of Jerusalem, seeing crowds of people, cheering and waving palm branches in the air. The whole atmosphere is one of joy, triumph, and celebration. We can get distracted or enthralled by the scene, and not see clearly the features of Jesus as he enters. But our readings from Isaiah and Paul's letter to the Philippians clarify his features for us. He is the Suffering Servant, meek and mute before his captors and persecutors; he is the very image of the unseen God, yet will not clutch at equality with God before he endures his final confrontation in humility. Isaiah and Paul help us "behold the Lamb of God" before we hear the story of his final and greatest confrontation. It is important that we see Christ clearly before we hear the account of his passion, for we--his Body through baptism, the church--now bear his face. We must, with him, enter into this time of trial so we can, also with him, enter into his final triumph. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

PASTOR’S CORNER During our celebration of Holy Week may we feel more acutely the power and presence of Christ, who through the wood of His cross gives us life and grace on our journey toward the glory of the Resurrection. As we ponder more intentionally the sorrowful mysteries of our Savior’s life, may we experience a deeper appreciation of how intimately the Christ of faith is connected to us and our world in times of trial and suffering. I recall the beautiful stained glass window of the Agony in the Garden in a church where I once served in Moundsville, WV. It somehow brought comfort and assurance to me that the Risen Christ is eternally present for us, offering His courageous example of how to deal with human suffering. Jesus so faithfully shows us how important it is that God Our Father’s will be done despite our human desires and preferences.

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT The Lord calls us to love God and to love our neighbor. Every day we are presented with opportunities to love our neighbor and help him “carry his cross”. These opportunities aren’t usually big events, they are usually ordinary occurrences like helping someone carry their groceries or holding the door open for them. The key is putting the other person’s needs before our own and not expecting anything in return.

In the late fourth century, a woman living a consecrated life in southern France made a four-year pilgrimage to Jerusalem. There, she encountered the rich liturgies of the city, bursting with Christians. She was a keen observer, and fortunately for us wrote vivid letters of her experience to a circle of women friends she calls her sisters. By the time of her journey, it is clear that even some catechumens were undertaking the dangerous journey so that they could be formed at the very site of the events of Christ's passion and rising. At the heart of the pilgrim experience were processions, such as today's joyous procession to the Mount of Olives, and brilliant catechesis from the bishop every day, as well as intense fasting and prayer. When you resolve to keep this week holy in your own life, and especially when you commit to participate in the full Triduum with worship in church and fasting at home, a very ancient tradition is within your grasp.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Now we have come to the center of the Christian year, beginning with today, Passion Sunday, Holy Week, and culminating in the Pasch, the Sacred Triduum. Some have called the culminating event in this week's journey of faith "The Three Days of Easter." The origins of many of our observances, including today's blessing of palms and solemn entry into the church, hearken back to old Jerusalem.

We are invited to participate with our whole being: mind, heart, and body. During Holy Week, Christians commemorate the Passion of Christ, Who died on Good Friday in reparation for the sins of mankind, and rose on Easter Sunday to give new life to all who believe. Thus, while Holy Week is solemn and sorrowful, it also anticipates the joy of Easter through the recognition of God's goodness in sending His Son to die for our salvation.

Holy Week Triduum (trid-yoo-um, meaning 3 days)

Christ redeemed us all and gave perfect glory to God principally through his paschal mystery: dying he destroyed our death and rising he restored our life. Therefore, the Easter Triduum of the passion and resurrection of Christ is the culmination of the entire liturgical year. These are not three separate liturgical celebrations but one which takes three days to celebrate. Thus, the solemnity of Easter has the same kind of preeminence in the liturgical year that Sunday has in the week. The Easter Triduum begins with the Evening Mass of the Lord's Supper, reaches its high point in the Easter Vigil, and closes with evening prayer on Easter Sunday.

Holy Thursday, April 13 The Mass of the Lord's Supper features the distinctive action of the Washing of the Feet, just as the Lord did for his disciples and we do for one another. Mass of the Lord's Supper begins at 7:00 p.m. Operation Rice Bowl Collection is taken. Private Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament takes place 8:00-11:00 p.m. Solemn Night Prayer is held at 11:00 p.m.

Good Friday, April 14 It is the first, the longest, the most grim, and the starkest day of the Triduum. On this day, we confront the truth that the impassible God suffered, that the ever-living God died. We confront the dark fact that He did so for our sins. The church will be open for prayer 12:00-3:00 p.m. Stations of the Cross take place at 3:00 p.m. Full Liturgy with Veneration of the Cross, Petitions, Scriptures & Communion Service takes place at 7:00 p.m. The Holy Land Collection is taken.

Holy Saturday, April 15

Noon Blessing of the Easter Food Followed by Parish Easter Egg Hunt

8:00 p.m. Easter Vigil Mass

Easter Vigil The high point of the liturgical year! This moving liturgy consists of The Service of Light, Liturgy of the Word, Baptism of new Christians and renewal of Baptismal vows, and the Eucharist takes place after nightfall on Holy Saturday.

Easter Sunday, April 16 8:30 and 11:15 a.m. Masses

Easter Sunday is a day all about seeking. The early Christian communities gathered around the Apostles, seeking more about the life and ministry of the Lord Jesus. Saint Paul told the baptized Colossians to "seek what is above." Mary of Magdala went to the tomb, seeking to find the Lord's body so that she could anoint it. We come to church on Easter Sunday, seeking many things. For some of us, this is a once-a-year journey, when we seek connection with the foundations of the Christian faith. For others, this day is the culmination of a long journey of Lenten repentance. For the newly baptized, this is the first day of a new life filled with promise and expectation. Whatever it is that we seek, let us be inspired by the disciple whom Jesus loved who, when he saw the wrappings of cloth inside the empty tomb, "saw and believed." ©Copyright, J.S. Paluch Co.

ENCOUNTER OUR NEIGHBORS We encounter Jesus this week in Jerusalem, a community he knew well. We prayerfully enter into our own communities too, encountering those who are hungry and thirsty, and others who need our help. How does our Lenten journey motivate us to serve those we meet in our daily lives? Visit crsricebowl.org for more information. Please remember to turn in your CRS Rice Bowl to the baskets in the Narthex on Holy Thursday, April 13. CALLED TO PROCLAIM “Blessed are they who come in the Name of the Lord!” Are you being called to proclaim Jesus as a priest, deacon, religious brother or sister? If you think this may be so, If so, contact Fr. Chris Luoni (330-744-8451 or [email protected]).
