The people of St. Joseph Parish will be most grateful if
you remember your Parish in your Will.

faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
“Tell Your Story” ACA Pledge Card Reminder: You should have received your ACA pledge card, either through the mail
or when you picked it up on one of the ACA Pledge Card Weekends. Please return your card to the Parish Center or drop it
in the basket when you attend Holy Mass. We are tracking well to our financial goal, but we only have received 17% pledge
cards turned in (844 families out of 5,096 families). We also have a goal of new pledges, which is 301 families (112 as of to-
day). If you have never given to the ACA or have not in the past few years, please prayerfully consider being part of this
important fund raiser. Any amount is appreciated and will help us cross the finish line. Thanks in advance for your commit-
ment to the Archdiocese Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA).
A MESSAGE FROM YOUR PASTOR
Dear Parishioners,
On Wednesday, July 4
th
, Independence Day, there will only be one Mass. That Mass will be celebrated at 8:00 a.m.
There will not be a 6:30 a.m. Mass on Wednesday.
A couple of weeks ago, we had Christ Power for our teens. Approximately 140 of our teens attended the week.
Throughout the week, our teens performed numerous service projects throughout St. Charles and the St. Louis area. In the
evenings, they received the Sacrament of Reconciliation, listened to talks on vocations and other spiritual topics. Our youth
minister, Danny Zink, did a remarkable job in coordinating this event. He had many volunteers from the parish and
seminarians to assist him during the week.
During the past week, we had our Vacation Bible School Week with our younger children. Close to 300 children
participated. Jeannette Koch runs the week with many volunteers from middle school and high school. It is a great
learning experience for our many children who participate in the week.
Our parish is truly blessed to have programs such as these during the summer time. It shows how alive and active our
parish is even during the summer months.

Adoration of Our Lord
St. Teresa is not speaking of material riches, but spiritual
riches. If we want to grow rich in grace, let us love God
more and visit with Him often. Adoration begins
Monday morning at 7:00 a.m. and continues through
Saturday at 7:45 a.m. There is always room for faithful
committed adorers, will you be one? For more
information, or to commit to a specific Holy Hour, contact:

PRAY FOR PRIESTS
What is a Catholic priest? He is a man ordained by Christ
to continue the Savior’s work of Redemption until the end
of time. He is therefore a person specially chosen to
proclaim the Gospel of salvation and lead the faithful to
their final destination. But he is mainly a person who
receives unique powers at ordination to consecrate and
sacrifice, and to reconcile a sinful people with their God.
(Servant of God, Fr. John A. Hardon, S.J.)
PLEASE PRAY WITH US IN THE ADORATION CHAPEL
every Monday morning at 8:30-9:30 and Tuesday evening at
7:00-8:00 as we Pray for the Sanctification of Priests and
Holy Vocations to the Holy Priesthood and Consecrated
Religious Life. Questions call: Sharon 636-447-3673
"I am quite sure that if we could but once
approach the Most Holy Sacrament
with great faith and love, it would suffice
to make us rich. How much more so if we
approach it often!" St. Teresa of Avila

SAINTLY MEDICAL MINUTE MEDITATION:
“Entrust the past to God’s Mercy, the present to His Love,
& the future to His Providence.” ~ St. Augustine
This week we define specific effects of a STROKE:
PHYSICAL EFFECTS
Brain injury from stroke sometimes
causes muscles to involuntarily contract
(shorten or flex) when the person tries
to move a limb. This creates stiffness
and tightness or “spasticity”. Spasticity
is like a “wicked charley horse”. When a
muscle can't complete its full range of
motion, the tendons & soft tissue sur-
rounding it can become tight. This
makes stretching the muscle much more difficult. If left untreat-
ed, the muscle can freeze permanently into an abnormal
and often painful position. Spasticity in the arm can cause a tight
fist, bent elbow & arm pressed against the chest. This can seri-
ously interfere with a stroke survivor's ability to perform daily
activities such as dressing. Spasticity in the leg causes a stiff
knee, pointed foot & curling toes.
Brain injury during a stroke often also leaves survivors prone
to neuromuscular imbalances. About 40 % of stroke survivors
have trouble maintaining balance. In addition, to overall balance
problems, the dizziness or a “spinning” sensation result is asso-
ciated with a 5X increase in risk of falls, which usually can occur
within a year of a stroke.
COMMUNICATION EFFECTS
♦Aphasia: is a disorder that results
from damage to language centers of the
brain. Thus individuals who were previ-
ously able to communicate through
speaking, listening, reading, writing
become limited in their ability to do so.
♦Apraxia: is difficulty initiating & executing voluntary movement
patterns necessary to produce speech.
♦Auditory Overload: Many skills are needed to translate sounds
into meaningful language. Sometimes, sounds become
overwhelming, and the brain can’t
decipher meaningful speech from noise.
♦Dysarthria (slurred speech): can affect the precision of speech
sounds (pronunciation), the quality & loudness of the voice,
& the ability to speak at a normal rate with normal intona-
tion.
♦Dysphagia: diifficulty in swallowing may occur in up to 65 % of
stroke patients. If not identified it can lead to poor nutrition,
pneumonia & increased disability.
♦Next week in Parish Pulse: Emotional Effects of Stroke.
