Fr. Jorge A. Román The number 40 is more symbolic in the Holy Scripture, rather than mathematical. It Means a period of transformation and change, a new beginning or a new era where purification is completed. We can see this number repeatedly in several Biblical passages: Forty days of the flood, forty years of Israel in the desert before reaching the Promised Land, forty days after the birth of Christ prior to being presented in the Temple, forty days that Jesus spent in the desert fasting and praying before beginning His Salvific Mission announcing the Reign of God. During the forty days of Lent, we are also preparing a change; to renew, with the passion, death and resurrection of Christ, to live a more plenty life, to be builders of hope and to establish the Kingdom of God on Earth, which is a continuous task until He returns at the end of time. During Lent we do penance, not to subject our body and spirit to endurance, but to strengthen our spirit with penance that helps us become better people. It is not, therefore, to refrain from drinking alcohol or sodas, or stop eating sweets or foods we like, but to grow in charity, patience, love and faith. Good penances are those that allow us to get closer to family and grow in love and respect for one another. To apply ourselves with greater effort in our studies or dedicating ourselves more at work. Replacing text messages and cyber social media with communicating face to face with those who are near to us. However, like Jesus, we are not free from the temptations of Satan. He wants to convince us that sacrifice is useless, that there is an easier life and success can be accomplished without much effort, that the world today offers the ease of legal and socially acceptable sin, so that there is no need to follow the complicated procedures and outdated doctrine of the Church. Never the less, like Jesus, we can be victorious. The Devil is not stronger than us and does not tempt us beyond the strength we have to resist temptation. Fasting, abstinence, sacrifice and prayer, strengthen us to defeat him. Jesus encourages us by saying "Have faith! I have overcome the world".

El número 40 en las Sagradas Escrituras, más que matemático, es simbólico. Significa un periodo de transformación
y cambio, un nuevo comienzo, una etapa en la que se completa una purificación o una preparación para una nueva etapa. Así podemos ver repetidamente este número en varios pasajes Bíblicos: Los cuarenta días del diluvio, cuarenta años de Israel en el desierto antes de llegar a la Tierra Prometida, los cuarenta días desde el nacimiento de Cristo hasta ser presentado en el Templo y los cuarenta días que Jesús pasó en el desierto ayunando y orando antes de empezar de lleno su Misión Salvífica anunciando la llegada del Reino de Dios. Durante los cuarenta días de la Cuaresma, también nos preparamos a un cambio, a renovarnos con la Pasión, muerte y resurrección de Cristo a vivir una vida más plena para ser constructores de esperanza y establecer el Reino de Dios en la Tierra, lo cual es una tarea continua hasta que El regrese al final de los tiempos. Durante la Cuaresma procuramos hacer alguna penitencia, no tanto para someter nuestro cuerpo y espíritu a pruebas de resistencia, sino a fortalecer nuestro espíritu con penitencias que nos ayudan a ser mejores. No se trata tanto de abstenerse de beber alcohol o sodas, o dejar de comer dulces o alimentos que nos agradan, sino de crecer en la caridad, la paciencia, el amor y la fe. Las buenas penitencias son las que nos permiten acercarnos más a la familia y crecer en cariño y respeto de unos para con otros. El aplicarnos con mayor esfuerzo en el estudio o en trabajar con mayor dedicación. El dejar un poco los mensajes de texto y los medios sociales cibernéticos y comunicarnos cara a cara con las personas que tenemos cerca. Sin embargo, al igual que Jesús, no estaremos libres de las tentaciones del Demonio que nos quiere convencer que realmente no vale la pena hacer tanto sacrificio inútil, que hay una vida más fácil y un éxito sin tanto esfuerzo, que el mundo de hoy nos ofrece la facilidad de pecar de manera legal y socialmente aceptable, de tal manera que no hay por qué seguir los trámites tan complicados y la doctrina anticuada de la Iglesia. Sin embargo, como Jesús, podemos salir vencedores, ya que el Demonio no es más fuerte que nosotros y no nos tienta más allá que la fuerza que tenemos para resistirle. El ayuno, la abstinencia, los sacrificios y la oración, nos fortalecen para poder vencerle. Jesús nos motiva diciendo: ¨¡Ánimo! Yo he venido al mundo¨.

LENT MISSION.- Nuri Rojas, a former cast member of Up With People and now a Campus Minister or St. Joseph’s Catholic High School in St. Thomas, Canada, Will give us the Mission Days to live plenty the Lent Season in order to prepare ourselves for the joy of Easter. Wednesday, March 13.- V Anniversary of Pope Francis. Friday, March 15.- I Anniversary of our Bishop Myron J. Cotta. SAINT PATRICK.- This Holy Bishop chose to return as a Pastor to the land that once he was a slave to eradicate the superstitions and heresies of the old Druids. He used a clover to explain the mystery of the Most Holy Trinity. His festivity has fallen into folklore, celebrating it with alcohol and other excesses foreign to the Christian Faith he preached. We invite you to celebrate this great Saint soberly this Sunday March 17.

Utilizaba un trébol para explicar el Misterio de la Santísima Trinidad. Su festividad ha caído en el folklore celebrándolo con alcohol y otros excesos ajenos a la Fe Cristiana que él predico. Les invitamos a Celebrar sobriamente a este gran Santo este Domingo 17 de Marzo.
EUCHARISTIC THURSDAY AND WAY OF THE CROSS FRIDAY DURING LENT Every Thursday of Lent after the 6:00 pm we will have a Holy Hour before the Blessed Sacrament at both St. Joseph’s Church and the Missions. The same goes for all the Fridays of Lent. There will be the bilingual prayer of the Stations of the Cross after the 6:00 p.m. Mass at St. Joseph’s Church and the Missions.
NEXT WEEK´S 2d COLLECTION.- This month´s snow removal bill was for $16,000.00 This is an extraordinary amount of money that goes beyond the expected budget and we are very short in the economy, especially since the collections has been very low because the short assistance and cancelation of Masses on the Missions because the snow storms. We ask for extra effort of your generosity to help us deal with this extraordinary expenses. Thank you.
CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES. RICE BOWL.- This Lent participate in CRS Rice Bowl, a faith in action program that invites you to encounter anew ourselves, our neighbors and our God. Use your Rice Bowl and Lenten Calendar daily to guide your Lenten prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Take the Rice Bowl with you and bring your donations at the end of Lent.

My Dear People of God, I would like to sincerely thank you all for your kindness and generosity for our recent second collection to benefit our Sisters and Brothers affected by the recent Camp Fire. Together as a Diocese we were able to collect and to send aid totaling $157,110.62 to our friends in the Diocese of Sacramento. Your generosity will bring much comfort to them, and assure them that they are not alone. I ask that you continue to pray for those affected communities and families, and thank you again for graciously contributing to the relief efforts. May the Lord reward you for your goodness!

Esta es una cantidad extraordinaria de dinero que va mucho más allá del presupuesto y estamos muy cortos en la economía, especialmente porque las entradas en las colectas han sido escasas debido a la poca asistencia y a la cancelación de Misas en las Misiones debido a las fuertes tormentas de nieve. Les pedimos que hagan un esfuerzo extra en su generosidad y nos ayuden a solventar estos gastos extraordinarios. Gracias.
