Curriculum Design and Development:
The Department of English, keeping in view the local, regional and global developmental
needs has designed and developed a need-based curriculum that aims to groom “global
communicators” with relevant knowledge, attitudes, skills, behaviour and values necessary
for achieving personal and professional success in today’s global scenario.
In consonance with the college vision of providing “Distinctive environment of educational
excellence with humane values and social commitment”, the curriculum offered by the
department pays a three-pronged focus on Language development, Soft Skills and Values
with a thrust on global Employability.
Exclusive lessons on Soft Skills like Leadership Skills, Emotional intelligence, Change
management, Planning, Decision Making, Problem Solving, Critical thinking, Persuasion
skills, Anger and Stress Management, interpersonal Skills, Work place Etiquette, Dining,
Dressing, Mobile etiquette, Telephonic Skills, etc equip our students with global
competencies and the pivotal Life Skills for life-long well-being and success.
Employability skills and career development are prioritised in our curriculum with topics like
Resume Writing, Group Discussion, interview skills, Presentation Skills, e-mail drafting,
Business correspondence and Report Writing. Topic like Statement of Purpose is included to
promote vertical mobility. Leveraging the advantage of Choice-based Credit System, the
department has introduced two skill enhancement courses -English for Competitive Exams
and Business English to further global employability.
Our Value Addition Courses which include 30 hour Certificate course on Theatre Arts and
40 hour Certificate course based on Cambridge Business English Certification (BEC)
provide an added dimension to our curriculum enrichment and enhancement.

FDP ON COMMUNICATION SKILLS -A WORKSHOP FOR
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
It is a rich tradition at Josephs to begin the academic year with faculty enrichment programs to
orient the teachers towards adopting effective teaching and learning practices.
The department of English hosted a Workshop on “Effective communication skills for the
teachers “conducted by Professor Kishore, ELT Division, EFLU, on 5 June 2018 as part of the
Faculty Development Programme for teaching faculty of St. Joseph’s College.
The session began with a special prayer rendered by Mrs. Pauline
for the professional development and well being of the teachers which was followed by Prof. P
L V ‘s key note address which emphasised on the quality sustenance and quality enhancement in
the education system. Then Dr. Sangeetha, HoD, Department of English in her welcome address
reiterated the unarguable importance of Teachers being effective communicators for impactful
knowledge transaction.
The highly insightful and interactive session which focused primarily on the mechanics of
efficient writing skills, imparted techniques to master the nuances of cohesive writing viz.,
usage of linkers, modifiers, paragraph writing etc.The half a day workshop also dealt with email
etiquette, soft skills, vocabulary for professional communication, etc., thus giving a
comprehensive overview of the three vital skills—Reading, Writing and Spoken English in the
context of professional communication and etiquette.
The session concluded with the resource person sharing information about e- resources for
continuous learning. The Vote of thanks proposed by Mrs. Prasitha Haridev was accompanied by
felicitation of the resource person by Mrs. Esther Ratana, Dean, student affairs. The feedback
administered by Ms. Vyoma at the end of the program recorded high praise for the enriching
session from the faculty.
ORIENTATION FOR THE SECOND AND THIRD YEAR STUDENTS
The Department of English conducted a two hour orientation programme for the second and third
year B.A, B.Sc and B.Com students on 13th and 14th June 2018 to orient them towards a past
track programme on English Proficiency for Employability. The Orientation covered topics on
basics like Letter Writing and also topics like Resume Writing for Career Building.
INDUCTION PROGRAMME FOR BA JPE STUDENTS
The Department of English in collaboration with MASS COMMUNICATION AND
JOURNALISM organized an induction session for the fresh batch of BA JPE students on
20 June 2018 for acclimatizing them with the campus, culture and its academic climate.
The session opened on an auspicious note with a prayer song rendered by the college
choir, ANNO DOMINI. Father SVD Kingston, HoD, Department of Mass Communication
briefed the students about what they can expect from the department and what the department
expects from the students. He also outlined the rules to be followed to sustain the discipline on
the campus. Dr. Sangeetha HOD, Dept of English addressed the students on need for blending
their innate creativity with stringent self discipline and commitment to court success like that of
Bahubali. The Students were shown an inspirational video on Goal Setting followed by an
activity wherein the students were asked to quote their desired future monthly income and also
allocate a budget of income and expenditure and savings against that income.
The Principal Rev Father Vincent Arokiadas in his motivational address, addressed the students
on the importance of being strategic and focused, while being dynamic and outgoing.
He congratulated the students, for their creative temperament and expressed his pride at the
increasing number of students showing an inclination to Humanities and Social Sciences.
Professor P.L. Vishweshwar Rao, Director, St. Josephs Degree and PG College familiarized the
students with the norms of the college and enlisted the skills required to stand out in the field of
Journalism. He ended his note with one of his mottos in life, “SMARTWORK AND NETWORK
LEADS TO SUCCESS.”
Controller of Examinations, Mr. B Satyanarayana Rao gave an insight into the examination
system of the college.
The senior students shared their memories over the years with words of wisdom on how to have
an enriching campus life with healthy relationships.
The concluding note was struck by Dr. Sangeetha hosting an ice breaking session which included
fun filled team building games that gave a scope for social interaction among the fresh entrants.
ST JOSEPH’S JOINS HANDS WITH TELANGANA POLICE FOR THE CYBER
SAFETY CAMPAIGN
St.Joseph’s Degree and Pg College in collaboration with Telangana Cyber Police
conducted a Cyber Safety Campaign at Delhi Public School on 5 June 2018 to
mark International Social Media Day.
The students of St.Josephs found a new purpose to celebrate the Social Media day
by spreading cyber safety awareness through a street play which dwelt on the
many aspects of social media abuse and cyber crime, to voice out a valuable
message on how to stay happy and safe on social media.
Josephites from the college drama club “Spot Light” performed a street play that
alerted the middle and high school students of Delhi Public school on the manifold
forms of Cyber crime that they can fall prey to. The skit dramatized online
fraudulent business dealings to other dreadful experiences like Facebook
friendships with strangers that pose a serious threat on Facebook, Twitter and other
cyber domains.The thought provoking campaign also included a quiz on cyber
crime awareness.
The campaign also included cyber awareness talk by Telangana Cyber Police
officers and Dr.Sangeetha, the Program coordinator, who reinforced the need and
strategies for cyber safety.The program concluded with the Principal of DPS
thanking Cyber Police and and St.Joseph’s for their commendable efforts in
creating awareness of the most emerging concern of the contemporary society.
TheAssistant Commissioner of Police, Sri Chakravarthy,initiated the campaign by
sending posters and pamphlets with precautionary measures to be followed for
Social media safety,which included a few pointers ,viz.,-use of Privacy Settings,
changing the password, not sharing personal information to strangers etc.Added to
this vital information ,The Cyber Police shared with the students and general
public their help line numbers on FB, Twitter, and Whatsapp for them to reach out
in times of need.
The campaign was formally flagged off by the college Principal Rev.Fr.Vincent
Arokiadas who wished students a happy and safe social media
experience.Dr.Sangeetha,HoD,Department of English spoke on how cyber safety is
an emerging concern in modern times where increasing number of youth and
women are falling victims of cyber crime as social media has become a necessary
evil which cannot be wished away.
Mr.Raghuveer ,ACP, Telangana cyber police congratulated the students on being
the agents of social change and reinforced the crucial importance of making cyber
safety awareness an integral part of public education
ENTRY LEVEL LSRW ASSESSMENT TESTS:
ENTRY LEVEL DIAGNOSTIC TESTS were conducted for the fresh batch of UG students to
assess their English Proficiency between 16-07-2018 to 20-07-2018. The LSRW assessment
helped the department to assess the language proficiency of the students in all the key four key
areas viz., Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing in order to customize the remedial
measures. The broad spectrum of tests included personal introduction round, wherein a scope
was created to gauge the communication skills and the confidence levels of the student. The test
used LSRW testing methods commonly used in competitive exams like IELTS, BEC
(Cambridge).
National integration week
The Department of English and Languages heralded the patriotic fervour through hosting a
bouquet of event that celebrated the rich Indian Legacy and proud National Identity of
Josephites. As a forerunner of seventy second Independence Day, the campus was enthused with
a National Spirit with the National Spirit, as a gamut of competitions and events themed around
‘India’ unfolded. The Quiz on “ The India I Know” challenged the students on their
Knowledge of Indian History, Economic, Bollywood, Geography, Music etc.... .
Likewise the Painting Competition was titled “India Through My Eyes” and the creative
writing Competition invited participation from poets to caption writers who wrote on the
Collage themed ‘India’.
Photography contest was the major highlight as it attracted forty nine brilliant pictures on
images drawn from Indian Life.
The other unique competitions included Letter to the P.M or C.M, writing to them about
suggestion to make their Green Initiatives effect. Last but not the least the declamation speech
had students deliver powerful speeches of National Leaders.
The week long competitions which commenced from 2 August culminated in a Grand
Traditional Day, where the campus was vibrant with Ethnic Colours and Costumes the Best
Dressed award was given to the student who used the tricolours of the National Flag to dress
innovatively.
The National Integration Week celebrations touched a crescendo with the Drama Club
performing a Mime on the theme of National Integration.
The Seventy Second Independence day celebrated on 15 August, 2018 marked the grand finale
of the National Integration Week.

LITERARY COMPETITIONS HELD BY JELS – THE LITERARY CLUB
Who's Clubbing at JELS ➢ JELS season I included a general Quiz Competitions and a series of JAM sessions conducted
from 1st July to 30th July, 2018.
➢ A week long literary competitions were conducted as part of National Integration week. Themed
around ‘India’, the competitions ranged from letter to the PM to Declamation speech. The Drama
club performed MIME on the theme of National Integration.
➢ The Drama Club performed a street play at Delhi Public School to spread awareness on Cyber
Safety.
➢ The members of the Drama Club in Collaboration with BOSCH performed a Street Play on at
INNOX to promote Theater Arts among common people.

Young Thinker’s Conference on Women Empowerment: Josephites along with WEC coordinator Dr. Sangeetha Motkar participated in The Young
Thinkers’ Conference on Women Empowerment n jointly organized by ISB and British Deputy
High Commission, Hyderabad on November 16 2018 at ISB. The Speakers included Kavitha
Kalvakuntla(MP), Andrew Fleming(British Deputy High Commissioner, Hyd), Professor
Milind G Sohoni, Deputy Dean, ISB.
AIDS AWARENESS DAY
AIDS AWARENESS RALLY: Josephites fight Stigma, Shame & Silence Josephites in
collaboration with Desire Society, an NGO working for the wellbeing of AIDS affected children
,participated in the AIDS awareness program on December 1, 2018 to coincide with World AIDS
Awareness Day. Under the guidance and leadership of Dr. Sangeetha 150 students from
St.Josephs joined hands with various corporate houses like Rotorac, Raddison Dell, etc in
zealously participating in the AIDS Awareness rally and other awareness programs conducted by
the Desire Society(a home for HIV affected well being). The AIDS Awareness Rally which was
flagged off by DIG Prasad started with a Walk from Shilparam to Botanical Garden along with
Desire Society HIV affected Children spreading the message of "Hand up for #HIV Prevention".
Josephites zealously raised their voices to shout slogans against discrimination of AIDS victims.
This was followed by a formal program wherein several eminent persons from NGOs to
corporate heads and medical officers educated the participants on various issues concerning
AIDS like the prevention, the taboos, the facts and the medical care available. The Awareness
program also included a Quiz on AIDS and Josephites were awarded for their excellence with all
the three prizes First, Second and the Third. The highlights of the program included enthralling
performances by the HIV affected children who are the inmates of Desire society which takes
care of their education, medical care and all round development. The sensitisation program
concluded with students coming forward in a spirit of brotherhood for the final segment- 'Selfie
with the children.
Workshop for Non-Teaching staff on “Building effective
work culture” The Department of English in collaboration with the INSPIRE Team comprising Mr.
Vivekanand Rayapeddi(An Eminent Soft skills Trainer and Inspirational Speaker), Mr. Giridhar
Moluguri(An LOA Certified Trainer and Motivator) and Ms. Archana Nandui(Psychologist and
Counsellor) conducted a workshop for Non-Teaching staff of St. Joseph’s on “Building
effective work culture”. The programme started with a prayer followed by the Welcome
Address by the HOD Dr. Sangeetha Motkar who highlighted the significance of building
effective work culture through soft skills development.
The interactive and lively session included Motivational Anecdotes, Team building games and
inspirational talks to instill Self- respect, Self-Esteem and Team spirit among the Support Staff
for personal and professional effectiveness.
Joy of Giving Week-Christmas Celebrations
The festive bells at St. Joseph are chimed through the entire advent season from 19 to 22
December 2018 by celebrating ‘The Joy of Giving’ week. The Josephites upheld the true spirit
of Christmas as they reached out to the needy and the poor with blankets and clothes, apart from
organizing flash mobs on the campus to raise funds to the tune of 30,000/- for charity. On Dec
22, the eve of Christmas, the Carnival cheer reverberated in every heart and every nook and
corner of the campus as the choir visited every classroom taking everyone by a joyous surprise
singing, dancing and greeting everyone" Merry Christmas and Happy New year!". The carnival
indeed set out a vibrant note, with delightful food, stunning dance performances and of courses
the customary carols and greetings. This was followed by a formal program where the Vice -
Principal’s Christmas message said, “The true spirit of Christmas has to be celebrated by
embracing forgiveness”. The highlight of the programme was the Ballad depicting the Nativity
Scene followed by a cheerful programme by the YFC (Youth for Christ) to celebrate the vibrant
spirit of Christmas and ended on a joyful note with the cake – cutting.
A One Day National Conference on “The Role of Language and
Literature in the Reformation of the contemporary society”
The Department of English and Second Languages, St. Joseph’s Degree and PG
College, King Koti Hyderabad organized a One day National Conference on “The Role of
Language and Literature in the Reformation of Contemporary Society” at their college premises,
King koti road, Hyderabad, on 19 January 2019.
The inaugural session started at 10 am. It was presided by the Principal, Rev. Fr. Dr. Vincent
Arokiadas. The British Deputy High Commissioner, Mr. Andrew Fleming was the Chief Guest.
Mr Flemming spoke at length about how Literature enriches life and the thought process of man.
Prof. Satyanarayana, the Vice-Chancellor of Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University, was the Guest
of Honour. He delivered an inspiring speech on the degeneration of human values and the need
for Literature to redeem its lost values. The keynote address was delivered by Prof. T. Vijay
Kumar, Head of the department of English, Arts College, Osmania University. He observed that
there was an urgent need for Language to reform itself in order to reform society. The dignitaries
were felicitated with mementos. The highlight of the conference was the release of conference
proceedings (CD) in the UGC referred E journal with ISSN number. The plenary session was
followed by Paper Presentations in 6 languages, namely, English, Arabic, French, Sanskrit,
Telugu and Hindi on the theme of the conference.
The Technical session for English was presented in two tracks, which included Language in
Media studies. Track 1 which had 18 paper presenters was chaired by Prof Muralikrishna and
track 2 which had 15 presenters had Prof P.L. Vishweshwar Rao and Prof. E. Nageswara Rao as
Chairpersons. The topics ranged from Literature and values in areas of didactic poetry, children’s
literature, and pragmatic studies to media studies.
The Technical session dedicated to Indian Languages i.e. Hindi, Sanskrit and Telugu had 9, 4
and 2 papers, respectively. The session was chaired by Dr Muktha Vani. The topics ranged from
politics, environmental concerns and acquisition of second languages to imbibing moral and
ethical values through language.
The technical session for Arabic was chaired by Prof. Mohammed Mustafa Shareef. The most
remarkable aspect of this session was that all papers were presented in Arabic. Most topics
revolved around the Holy Quran that deals with humanity and Universal Brotherhood.
The technical session for French chaired by Prof. Ravi Eashwarchand, had 7 paper presenters
with topics on the importance of Language, Social and Cultural values and Employability skills.
The conference saw papers which added to the notion of literature and language as a powerful
instrument of social reformation. They focused on how literature can connect, guide and reform
society and help in the betterment of society.
The participation in the One day National Conference was robust with 80 full scholarly papers
centered on the Conference theme. This was followed by lunch and the valedictory session. The
Valedictory function had Prof. Mohan Singh, former Dean and Principal Arts College OU as the
Chief Guest who addressed the gathering on the significance of reading good books, particularly
biographies for the holistic development of individual and society. The conference received
encouraging feedback and appreciation from the resource persons and the participants.
The conference also saw papers which added to the notion of literature and language as a
powerful instrument of social reformation.
The conference marked a milestone in Academic Research on contemporary issues as 82 quality
research papers submitted as part of the conference were published with the ISSN number(2236-
6124) in the UGC approved Journal titled “ The International Journal of Research”.

The Department of English conducted Theatre Arts Certificate Course from 14 February to 2
March 2019 (2 to 4 pm). Dr. Rammohan Holagundi of Nishumbita Ballet & Theatre Group
successfully trained 36 UG students in acting, voice modulation and Body Language through
interesting activities, breathing exercises and games. The 30 hour module on acting won huge
appreciation from the students who demanded an advanced course in the coming year.

The Department of English conducted a 40 - hour training for Cambridge Business English
Certificate program . The training sessions conducted by Karthik Teja Pulugurtha comprised
modules on Business English to equip the students with effective Reading, Writing, Listening
and Speaking skills in international Business contexts.
