Principal’s Report
Dear Parents, Students, Staff and all associated with St Joseph’s Community
Have you noticed an increasing reluctance on the part of your children to get out of bed in the morning over the last week or two? Well that’s what hard work and a constant routine does to small people (and big people) over the course of a school year. The only known cure for such an ailment is a good dose of Christmas holidays. In the meantime, those wonderful persons known as parents might have to call for understanding and family support. There is an old review of a Japanese film titled The story of Jiro. The summary contained this sentence, As he matures, Jiro learns the restrictions of the world and the suffering of life. No doubt all adults can relate to this sentiment, as it has been part of the human experience for all of us. However, children who are full of hope and the excitement and expectation of what life might have in store for them, are sometimes alarmed by the growing realization that life isn’t as easy as it perhaps seemed to be when they were at the infant stage. Sometimes our children are asked to master learning skills or cope with emotional situations which are beyond their capabilities or maturation levels and as a result, can slowly lose their confidence and self-esteem. If we, as the significant adults in their life are not aware of these difficulties and don’t assist our children to cope then, the children’s development to full potential will never be realized and their lives may not reach that fullness of which it was capable. If at this time of the year we, as grown people, are feeling the wear and tear of a year’s accumulated happenings, then no doubt, so are our children. The question is, do we regard it as sufficient importance to find some sympathetic time to spend with our children. We shouldn’t attempt to shield our children from the realities of their life or mislead them with false hope. What we can do is to be seen to be understanding as to how they see their life and its difficulties and offer assistance. In this way, they feel as if they are the ones who are finding the solutions and coping with their problems. Hopefully, self-esteem and personal confidence will soon be on the healthy road to recovery. It is so easy being a parent!!
First CommunionThe First Communion Masses held over the weekend were a wonderful celebration of how special the Eucharist is in our faith. For the children involved, and their families, this day is
PrayerHoly God, source of all goodness, you show us in Mary MacKillop
a woman of faith who lived by the power of the cross
Teach us to embrace what
she pioneered:new ways of living the gospel
that respect and defend the human dignity of all in our land.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen
imbued with joy, faith and grace. It was a pleasure to see them share this time so reverently in the Church. May this Eucharist strengthen them and nourish them for their journey of life, and I sincerely hope that this connection continues with our Parish. Thank you to all involved with preparing our children for this occasion.
Staff News •At the conclusion of this year Merlyn Cantwell will finish her role as an Educational Support Officer. I sincerely thank her for her commitment to the students and staff over the past 3.5 years of service.

Thought for the WeekIt is not how much we do in this life that is important, but rather,
how much Love we put into what we do.
Grade 5 CampThe Grade 5 Students had a fantastic time on their recent Melbourne Camp. The first day was action packed with students going directly from school to the Shrine of Remembrance where we had a very informative guided tour. From there we went to Science Works where we explored the ‘Think Ahead’ displays which focused on what we might be able to do with technology in the future, we also got to see a planetarium screening. After getting settled in at camp we went and had pizza for dinner followed by a trip to Eureka Tower where we got to see the sun setting.
The next day started with a tour of Parliament House where our local member Jordan showed us around. We finished up our camp with a visit to the Chinese Museum where we got to participate in a Kung Fu lesson. After a busy few days we returned to school.
Grade 5 Team
District CricketOn Friday November 1 the 5/6 Students participated in our local School Cup Cricket Competition. Even though none of our teams made it through to the final we still had a great time participat-ing and competing against the teams from other primary schools in the area.

Junior News - 1/2
In Prep, Grade 1 and Grade 2 we are learning all about generations. We want to know all about the lives of our older generations and how life was different then compared to now. We have prepared some questions for our Grandparents and Special Friends and invite you all to come and celebrate our learning and teach us about your gen-eration! So come along and enjoy the afternoon with us. All Grandparents and Special Friends are invited. The after-noon will take place in our Prep and 1/2 Neighbourhoods, on the November 28 from 2:30-3:15pm. We look forward to seeing you all then.
Junior Team
It has been a busy couple of weeks in the 1/2 neighbourhood!
In mathematics we have been looking at multiplication and division. We know that the mul-tiplication symbol means ‘groups of’ and the division symbol means ‘shared between’. We have done lots of hands on learning to help us use different strategies to find answers.
We began our Footsteps class and have had lots of fun ‘moving and grooving’ learning our dance for the end of year production. We cannot wait to show you!
We have also been learning about Catholic Missions and the children in Ghana. We man-aged to raise lots of money through our Crazy Sock Day and Frozen Cups. We also recognise the importance of prayer for these children and we wrote special prayers for them in our RE classes.
