Our After School Clubs We continue to offer a range of after school clubs for our KS1 and KS2 children. These clubs are free and give the children a chance to take part in sports they haven't tried before. They are also able to interact with children from different classes. Sports Leaders

We are very happy to introduce our new sports leaders for 2018-2019. Our sports

leaders have an important role this year. Each of them submitted an excellent

application for the role and thoroughly deserve the responsibility which they now

have in school.

Responsibilities

Our sports leaders have a variety of responsibilities around school.

Most importantly, our sports leaders act as sporting role models for other pupils.

They are looked up to by the younger children and have a positive impact on

their peers. We look forward to seeing these children grow during the year and

build upon their already great reputations.

Meet our Sports Leaders

These are the children who are making a big difference to our playtimes and to

sport around our school.

Sponsorship

As you know, we have lots of different teams competing in lots of different events over

the course of the school year. In order to ensure that we turn up to events looking smart,

please let us know if you have a company, or know of any companies, that would be

willing to sponsor a kit for one of our teams .

Our After School Clubs

We continue to offer a range of after school clubs for our KS1 and KS2 children. These

clubs are free and give the children a chance to take part in sports they haven't tried

before. They are also able to interact with children from different classes. These clubs

are run by members of school staff and coaches from REEVO coaching. Keep an eye out

for the clubs which will be running in spring in our newsletters.

Thank you!

Sport plays a huge role at St Joseph’s. We feel that sport allows the children to express

themselves and achieve in areas outside the classroom environment. For this to happen

we need lots of support. At St Joseph’s we are lucky to have such supportive families and

staff. Without these people we would not be able to compete in so many great events.

Thank you for all your support over the course of this term; it is very much appreciated.

Tag Rugby

Once again, the St Joseph’s tag rugby team have achieved success across Durham.

During September and October they competed in the Chester-Le-Street tag rugby

league. They finished top of the table, remaining unbeaten. They continued this

success with victory in the Derwentside tag rugby competition, again remaining un-

beaten. They have now made it through to the County Durham finals where they

hope to continue their unbeaten run!

Competitive Sport This term we have taken part in the following sporting competitions. Y6 football, Barry’s football,

Girls’ netball, cross country, tag rugby, sports-hall athletics.

The children competed fantastically at these events. More importantly, all our children competed with

skill, determination and respect for other competitors.

Netball

Our netball team have taken part in a friendly league this term at North Durham Academy. This league gives

them the opportunity to hone their skills in preparation for the netball league in the summer term. Children from

Year 5 and 6 made up the team and played extremely well, improving each week. Miss McKenna was impressed

with their ability and teamwork and has high hopes for the next competition.

Sportshall Athletics

We have competed in two sports-hall athletics events this term. Our Year 5 and 6

children competed in the Derwentside Sports-hall Athletics in November. They did

extremely well and won on the day. Their scores meant they finished 2nd overall in

Derwentside.

Year 4 also had a great time at the Leisureworks Sports-hall Athletics competition.

The whole class competed and came second overall. Miss Eastham and Miss Sindon

were so proud of the children’s attitude and effort.

Cross Country

One of the most popular sports this term has been cross

country. Miss Glendenning continues to be impressed with

the amount of children who turn up each week to compete

in the Derwentside Cross Country competitions. This term, in

all weather conditions, the children have made us so proud

with their determination. Children from years 3, 4, 5 and 6

competed in each of the 4 weeks and made some huge im-

provements over this time. Each week St Joseph’s had the

largest number of competitors competing in the reserve race.

Emily, our cross country superstar, had some fantastic races

and won the final in the girls event. Well done to all who

competed!

Football

This year, we have three football teams competing in different league competitions.

The Y6 team, competing in the Chester-Le-Street league, have shown great improve-

ment during the first half of their league season. They have had some tough games

but have enjoyed every one and have shown great commitment and sportsmanship.

We also have a team competing in the Derwentside league (Barry’s Team). This is a

young team which is comprised of children from years 4 and 5. They have had a

good first half to the season and currently sit around mid table. This is a great

achievement, particularly as they are usually playing against teams full of Year 6

children.

This year we also have a girls’ football team which have competed in the Chester-Le-

Street league. They have played brilliantly in all their games and finished with a

fantastic 3-0 win in their final game. They hope to build on this success in the sec-

ond half of the season.

Our links with Durham CCC

Over the course of this term we have continued to work very closely with Durham

CCC. In recent years they have offered some fantastic opportunities for our chil-

dren to get involved in cricket in the local area.

Recently Durham’s work in the local community was recognised with a national

award which recognised their work with local schools, including ourselves. For the

awards ceremony, they filmed a video to show what they had been doing with

schools in Durham. St Joseph’s had the honour of being a part of this video

which showcased the many activities that the children have taken part in dur-

ing sessions with Durham CCC coaches. As always, our children were fantastic

and showed off our school to a national audience.
