Lent is a 40-day period in preparation for Easter. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent. This year, Ash Wednesday falls on 13 February and Easter Sunday falls on 31 March. The colour purple or violet is the colour of Lent. Purple in the past was the sign of royalty, but it has been used by the church as the colour of repentance.

Lent is time when Christians observe a period of prayer, fasting, alms-giving, repentance, moderation and spiritual discipline. This is done to imitate Jesus’ 40-day fast in the wilderness (Mat 4:1-2). The purpose of Lent is to provide the purification of the person by weaning people from sin and selfishness through self-denial and prayer, by creating in them the desire to do God’s will and to make God’s kingdom come by making it come first of all in their hearts.

Lenten practices include attending Mass more often, pray the Stations of the Cross or other kinds of prayerful reflection, abstaining from certain foods or physical pleasures, carry out more works of charity. Some may give up smoking. Others give up chewing gum. Still others give up over-eating or the use of Facebook. People vow to give up anything, as long as it prepares them well for Easter.

Chinese New Year Celebration

Students from the various classes presented some performances during an assembly held in conjunction with Chinese New Year on 6 February (Wed). Mass was also celebrated on that day. Incidentally, 6 February is the memorial of St Paul Miki and his companions who were 17th century martyrs of Japan. That is why the colour of the vestments was red on that day which was very appropriate for Chinese New Year. St Paul Miki and two of his companions who were martyred are Jesuits.
