PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Motor Neurone Fundraiser and the Widow’s Offering

This week we were privileged to welcome Kim Evans (long-serving staff member and Assistant Principal of St John’s College Woodlawn) on the homeward stretch of his “Around Australia” Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Fundraiser.

In 2010, Kim lost his best friend, and brother-in-law, Bob Delaney to the disease. Bob was also a long-serving staff member of St John’s College, Woodlawn and Trinity, Lismore. I was privileged to have been taught by both Kim and Bob early in their teaching vocations.

Kim addressed our Year 10 students imparting much wisdom about the importance of giving to others. He reminded our students that one does not necessarily need to travel around Australia to do great things when assisting people in need. Kim stated that he anticipated fundraising $1,000,000 dollars before embarking on the journey. He now sees that without the support of corporate sponsorship, such a figure was well out of his reach. His final figure of $50,000, however, will go a significant way in the purchase of equipment that will allow the continuation of research in to a cure form MND. Also, Kim acknowledged the great generosity of ordinary Australians making a special effort to make a difference in our world. In this respect Kim’s journey has been very successful indeed.

On Monday evening Kim and his team were invited to a fundraiser organised by our Principals and Assistant Principals of our St Agnes Parish Secondary Schools at the Youth Hub. I would like to extend a special thank you to Mrs Eichmann who played a key role in this regard. On his way to the Hub Kim encountered a Year 10 student from St Joseph’s Regional College walking on the sidewalk. The student waved Kim down and said, “Thank you for coming to speak to us today at school.” The student then proceeded to give Kim a 50 cent donation. This student’s meagre donation meant more to Kim than any significant figure given to him; for it conveyed a genuine appreciation, learning and a sense of generosity from the student.

Kim’s experience of the generosity of others reminded me of Jesus witnessing the Widow’s Offering in Mark’s Gospel: And he sat down opposite the treasury, and watched the multitude putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. And a poor widow came, and put in two copper coins, which make a penny. And he called his disciples to him, and said to them, “Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. For they all contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, her whole living.”

On behalf of the community of St Joseph’s Regional College, I would like to thank Kim for his tremendous effort to help others through his celebration of Bob Delaney’s life. Kim has also reminded us about the importance of tradition and being true to your College, Family and God . I would encourage students of St Joseph’s Regional College to reflect on the importance of giving to others as a key part of their own personal formation, relationship with Jesus and need to be open to the calling of the Holy Spirit in their lives.

I would like to particularly thank members of the Parent Assembly Executive for assisting with the organisation of raffle prizes on the evening. I would like to thank staff members, Mr Chris Delaney and Mr Craig Buesnel who supported Kim by riding with him from Taree to St Joseph’s Regional College.

Regatta Success Our rowing squad travelled to Newcastle last weekend to compete in two regattas. Results are as follows: Saturday - Newcastle University Regatta Berry Park Raymond Terrace, Hunter River. Girls D Grade Quad - 1st - Gabby Staunton, Mary Shelley, Lily Howard, Stacey C oombes Girls under 16 Single - 1st - Mary Shelley Boys under 16 Single - 2nd - Bryce Gardener Boys under 16 Single - 3rd - Lochlan Hughes Boys under 16 Quad - 1st - Bryce Gardener, Zac Bell-Allen , Jarvis Lulham, Loc hlan Hughes Sunday - Hunter Valley Grammar School Berry Park Raymond Terrace Hunter River Under 16 Doubles - 2nd - Bryce Gardener and Jarvis Lulham Under 16 Girls Quad - 2nd - Mary Shelley, Stacey Coombes, Gabrielle Staunton , Lily Howard - well done, tough conditions. Under 16 Boys Quad - 1st - Bryce Gardener, Zac Bell-Allen , Jarvis Lulham, Loc hlan Hughes Emily Shelley

I now commend to your reading a letter from Mrs Chantelle Hancey reporting on the College Rowing team’s most recent regatta at Raymond Terrace.

Dear Mr Dempsey My daughter, Brooke, is a member of the school rowing team and competed this weekend at two regattas at Berry Park, near Raymond Terrace. The regattas were both open events, in which our students competed against other schools as well as clubs which have more experienced adult rowers. The SJRC rowing team is coached by Alan McCartney and managed by Amanda Lulham, whose son Jarvis is also a member of the team. This was the first regatta Brooke has attended, although she has been training with Alan for the last 12 months. I just wanted to let you know about the success of the weekend. SJRC had nine members competing, which was by far the least amount represented by any club attending. However, all of the rowers were a credit to your school and to Alan's coaching. It was obvious by watching the events that our students are showing better technique than many others. The students all respect Alan, which is obvious in the way they listen to him and their involvement in all aspects of rowing from setting up the boats to cleaning them afterwards. These students train at 6:30am on Saturday mornings at Rocks Ferry and are always there on time ready to row. Another thing I was impressed with was the way the students (and parents) all interacted with each other and helped each other getting in and out of the water. They even spent the time in between races playing card games together. After talking with Brooke about the other students I now also know that this has carried over to their relationships at school, particularly with the older boys being protective of the girls. On Saturday both the boys’ and girls’ quad scull teams won their events. This meant that eight members of the nine member team had won a medal, with Brooke being the one who hadn't won a medal. On Sunday morning the students all got together and made a pact that 'no-one goes home without a medal' and did their best to ensure that Brooke also received a medal. However, in the quad scull race the girls had minor problems with the boat which affected their steering. They still finished a credible third place but were all upset they didn't come away with the win. They were each blaming themselves, in particular one girl whose riggings came undone. When he saw the girls were emotional, Alan took the girls aside to speak with them about it. Mindset is a huge part of competing

and it was good that Alan spoke with them and got them back on track so quickly so they could focus on their next events. Amanda has done a great job of the organisation of the team and her assistance has certainly made it much easier to attend events in a sport which we have not been involved in before.

Some members of the team actually won more than one event and received more medals and although she didn't come home with any, Brooke thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience and she has said that she 'just wants to row'. We both look forward to the next regatta. Once again, your students were a credit to your school and they should be commended, along with Alan and Amanda. Regards Chantelle Hancey

On behalf of the College community I would like to reiterate Chantelle’s words of thanks to Alan McCartney and Amanda Lulham. We are very thankful for this enriching opportunity you make available for our students.

Year 8 CSYMA Retreat On Wednesday Year 8 students experienced the fun and challenges of a CSYMA retreat experience. We were blessed with the volunteer services of five members of the CSYMA post school team to facilitate the retreat.

CSYMA Youth Ministry encompasses the CSYMA Vision in inspiring and equipping schools to become the centres of the New Evangelisation through both teacher and student pathways for faith formation and service opportunities. The Four Phase Model is comprised of an initial retreat experience; Youth Ministry curriculum pathway; formation of senior Youth Ministry teams and, connection with the broader Church community. This Four Phase Model is comprised of Phases One to Three completed within the school context and Phase Four completed post or outside of school.

The goal is to integrate the model of formation into the heart of the school wide curriculum so as to bring about a significant change in the ‘Catholic Faith Culture’ of students and staff. The CSYMA Youth Ministry model is integrated into Year levels creating a Youth Ministry Pathway for students to progress through whilst at School.’

The aims of the Youth Ministry Model are: • Evangelisation – to offer students the opportunity to enter

into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. • Nurture – to enable students to become Disciples of Jesus

through a daily walk of faith, prayer, fellowship, service and mission.

• Education in Faith – to offer teaching to students in areas of doctrine, Scripture and Spirituality so that faith experience might find understanding.

• Initiation – to incorporate students into the life of the Church and to develop in them Catholic identity, including drawing young people into Sacramental participation.

• Mission – to participate in areas of mission within and beyond the School. Mission would include proclamation to service and justice opportunities.

• Leadership – to develop Christian Leadership attributes and skills.

CSYMA aims to serve the Church by: • Empowering young people to live as disciples of Jesus Christ in our world today by drawing youth to

responsible participation in the life, mission and work of the Catholic faith community. • Training staff and offering professional youth ministry formation to our young people in schools. • Providing links between school-based youth ministry programs and pathways for students to continue

their evangelisation outside of the school community.

CSYMA has been endorsed by the Australian Church at the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference (ACBC) ‘Commission for Mission and Faith Formation’ in 2008 as a national post World Youth Day ‘formation and mission school initiative’ for the Australian Church. YOUTH MASS Since the start of September the Sunday night Youth Mass has been celebrated at 5:00 pm. At the commencement of Term 4, the parish schools have been rostered with the responsibility for leading music at the mass. There is an opportunity for some social gathering for families and youth after each Youth Mass. St Joseph’s Regional College will lead the singing at the Mass on Sunday, 10th November and Sunday 1st December. I encourage any students who are interested in being involved in the music ministry to please see me.

Families are requested to consider putting aside this date as an evening when they will attend mass at St Agnes’ Church. ROTARY YOUTH SPEAKING Congratulations to Grace Philp who competed in the final of the Regional Rotary Youth ublic Speaking Awards on Tuesday. Although Grace did not win, it is clearly evident from Mr Jim O’Brien’s report that Grace performed admirably.

“Grace was an outstanding ambassador for SJRC this evening. Her speech was outstanding and the delivery confident and clear. She was also dressed perfectly in the school uniform and supported by Hamish who also came in uniform. It would have been a very difficult to separate Grace from the winner, Samantha Kirkwood from Camden Haven High School.”

Mr Jim O’Brien, Coordinating Principal

WELCOME BACK I would like to personally thank Mr Jim O’Brien for attending this evening and welcome him back to work next week after his recuperation from surgery.

God Bless

Vinnie’s Sleep Out

On any given night in the Hastings area, there are between 150-200 homeless people. Last Friday night this statistic went up 45, as 38 students and 7 teachers slept outside to raise awareness of homelessness and to learn about this issue. I would like to personally thank all staff and students that participated in this event which raised over $500 to go towards local youth services in the area. During the night, we were joined by guest speakers from St Vincent de Paul, McKosker House and the Hastings Council. I’d like to send out a special thank you also to Kenny Little’s Fruit and Veg for donating beautiful fruit and Bakers Delight for donating bread! Thank you again to everybody that participated and gave up their warm beds for the night.

Year 11 Reflection Day

The Year 11 students will be participating in a one day Reflection Day today at Flynn’s Beach Surf Club. As they begin their HSC year, it’s important to take time to reflect on their journey ahead. The day provides an opportunity for students to recognise their individual giftedness, the support of the community at St Joseph Regional College and the comfort in being a part of a faith community. Further information will be given to students as the day approaches. Thank you to Mr Bruce Smith who is planning and coordinating the Reflection Day.

Sunday 5pm Youth Mass

Our students and families are warmly welcome to the St Agnes Parish Youth Mass at 5pm each Sunday evening. Following the mass there are activities that take place at the HUB.

Supervising your Learner Driver (L)

Learner drivers under 25 • Must have at least 120 hours of supervised on-road driving experience, including 20 hours at night time; • One hour of structured driving tuition by a professional driving instructor will count as 3 hours in the Learner Driver

Log Book to a maximum of 10 hours counting as 30 log book hours. • Must hold an L licence for at least 12 months. • For L and P1 drivers mobile phone use is prohibited, even hands-free or loudspeaker. • From 1 July will be allowed to travel up to 90km/h instead of 80km/h; and

Tips for Parents • Safe driving takes time and practice – it is more than just operating a vehicle. • Plan for a variety of driving experiences (e.g. different road conditions, weather conditions) and vary the time of day. • Shorter drives can be useful early on. • Reduce the risk of distraction (e.g. turn off mobile phones) • Keep instructions short and clear. • Be positive and acknowledge when your teenager does well rather than criticise. • At the end of a drive reinforce achievements and discuss areas to work on. • Real on-road driving experience is more beneficial than ‘advanced’ or ‘defensive’ off-road driver training. • You and your young driver should be read the Road Users Handbook (NSW road rules) and understand licence conditions. • For helpful information, attend a free ‘Helping Learner Drivers Become Safer Drivers Workshop’ in your local area. Contact the Roads and Maritime Services (replacing the RTA) on 13 22 13, visit www.rms.nsw.gov.au or visit your local Council’s website.

NEW Safer Driver Course for Young Drivers

From 1 July 2013, learner drivers who complete the Safer Drivers Course will receive a reduction of their logbook driving hours from 120 to 100.

The Safer Driver Course is a combined theoretical and practical course involving a facilitated group session discussing how to manage risks on the road and tailored in-car coaching addressing individual learning needs.

The group session will be two to three hours, and the in-car coaching will be one to two hours.

Not all learner drivers will be able to access the course immediately. The course will be progressively rolled out in NSW based on demand and provider availability.
