Children will be dismissed of 2:20pm. To wind up our term, we will assemble as a whole school and celebrate Mass on the morning of this day. Our term has been busy and exciting with many valuable learning experiences and events for the children. We have also had our challenges and times of sadness as a school community. It is in these times we pray to God asking for His love, guidance and strength. I wish to thank the children and staff for their efforts throughout the term. The children have worked hard and de- serve a good break. Our staff of course continue to strive toward improving learning and creating a supportive envi- ronment for our children. They too will enjoy a well-deserved break. Prep (Foundation) Enrolments 2018 A reminder to families who have a child ready for prep (Foundation) in 2018, to complete an enrolment form to ensure placement for the coming year. If you know of families who wish to enrol, or enquire about enrolment, please encourage them to make contact with the school. Interviews for existing families will be conducted early-term three. We will make contact with you to arrange a time to meet. School Reports School reports were sent home on Monday and parent/teacher/child meetings conducted yesterday and into the early evening. We hope that these meetings, particularly involving the children, will have been informative and affirming for the children and for their learning. We hope the process will be an ongoing and positive one for the children, parents and teachers. I also acknowledge and thank the teachers for their persistent work with the reports and interviews. It is a very busy time particularly at this time of the term. Lunch Orders We are pleased to announce that Alli Sheehan, Alimentos Catering, will be taking over the “Lunch Order” service at the commencement of term three. Alli comes highly recommended and has an exciting menu which aligns closely with the Green, Amber and Red guidelines for Healthy Foods/Canteens. We have decided, in consultation with the School Committee and Alli, to commence with lunch orders on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays using the same system we have been using in the past. Over the course of time the process of ordering may change as we align with Alli’s current practices. Attached to today’s newsletter is the menu for your perusal in readiness for term three. Thank You A big thank you to Bernard Miron, Anna Armour, Dale Malady and Andrew Davidson for taking down the St Jo-seph’s name at the old entrance of the school, cleaning and polishing it and reinstalling it on the north side of the school hall. It looks wonderful! Bernard has also taken down the crucifix, is cleaning it and will reposition it at our administration block. Thank you!

Entry to Classrooms A reminder to all families that entry to classrooms is at 8:40am. At this time children can place their bags etc and get any items ready for the day’s learning. Our annual Can Challenge continues this week!

It is wonderful to see that the stacks of cans in each classroom are continuing to grow. The generosity of our families who are donating these much needed, non-perishable food items for St

Vincent de Paul Society to help people in our local community is commendable. As followers of Jesus we work towards a more just and fair world not merely from a sense of charity, but because we believe it is a necessary response to the Gospel call of Jesus, and a matter of justice.

This response is central to our faith, and central to our Catholic school’s identity. So continue collecting some in date, undamaged cans to contribute to this vital cause!!

A representative from St Vinnies will be at school after Mass on Friday to collect the cans. Everyone is

welcome!!

Gospel Value – Review Of Term Values Wisdom, Optimism, Justice, Commitment. Reviewing of term values.

Caring Habits – Listening Listening is showing that we respect others and are willing to take note of what they have to say. We can also learn from others, just as they can learn from us when they listen to us. It is also good manners to listen. A good listener is attentive. They make good eye contact, don't interrupt what the other person is saying and shows an interest in what is being said to them.

Behaviours Self Esteem flourishes when we have open lines of communication with those around us and we allow our children to be themselves. Encouraging children when they make a mistake and letting them know that it is okay is extremely important. It is giving them permission to learn from those mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes! The important part is what we do once we have made the mistake; repeat it or learn from it!

Chocolate Milkshake / Hot Chocolate Money We are donating the money from our chocolate milk and hot chocolate money to the CARITAS Australia East Africa appeal. 23 million people are currently on the brink of famine in South Sudan and other areas of East Africa and Yemen.

Book Week This year the theme for Book Week is Escape to Everywhere. Books offer us the chance to escape into other worlds, both real and imagined. We can explore other cultures and experiences. We will once again be holding a competition to create a poster or small 3D scene that fits the theme in some way. You might like to use the holiday time to work on this as a family. Our dress up day will be on Friday August 25th. Please slot this date onto your calendar. The children could come to school dressed up as a character they would like to escape with, a place to escape to, adventure characters, favourite book characters that inspire them or characters that have escaped in a story such as: Where’s Wally, The Cow who Jumped Over the Moon, Indiana Jones etc.. More infor-mation will be given closer to the day. The school holidays might be the perfect time to scour the Op Shops in order to create an outfit or to have family discussions around the theme.

Italian Day - Melinda Mulqueen

Italian Day was on Friday 23rd June. Italian day was about celebrating the region of Puglia. We had some visitors. Their names were Signore and also Signora D’Amico they came to our school to play instruments at our assembly. They played a piano accordion and a tamborine. During Italian day we also played lots of activities. A couple of my favourite activities were making biscotti di li-mane and I also loved playing all of those fun games. Some of them were pinning the nose on Pinocchio and flicking coins into the Trevi foun-tain. Italian day was very fun and I can’t wait for next year’s Italian day. By Jack Debnam Grade 5/6B

Italian Day - Melinda Mulqueen

On Friday the 23rd June we had our annual Italian day. This year the theme was celebrating the region of Puglia. I dressed up as a fashion designer from Milan fashion week. My first activity was making biscotti di limone and I got very messy from mixing the biscotti with my hands, it tasted deli-cious though. My second activity was games. I threw coins in the Trevi fountain and stuck noses on Pinocchio. My fa-vourite things were seeing Signore and Signora D’Amico play the piano accordion and the tamborine and getting up and dancing to the beat. It was an amazing day of dancing, baking and creating. By Sienna Webster Grade 5/6 Clancy

Last Friday we had our Italian day. The theme was celebrating the region of Puglia. We started the day with the performers Signore and Signora D’Amico playing the piano accordion and the tamborine and a parade. Everyone had great costumes. Af-terwards we were split into 12 groups so we could do the activities. My group’s first ac-tivity was making biscotti di limone. The biscotti came out really well but I think eve-ryone just enjoyed making it and getting messy. Then we played games. My favourite game was tossing the coin in the Trevi foun-tain, but my buddy’s was definitely pin the nose on Pinocchio. Afterwards we learnt about Saint Padre Pio and his stigmata and the trulli houses. I thought the houses were really cool. Then we had the video and map activity. Finally we did the pizzica dance with the scarves and the orecchiette pasta which was hard but fun. All in all the day was great. I wish I could do it next year. By Isabelle Jones Grade 5/6 Clancy

We also tried to shape orecchiette pasta. We learn’t about Saint Padre Pio. We played games and we watched a video and stuck things on a map and we dressed up. What’s Happening In & Around Classrooms

Grade 3/4 Excursion - Scienceworks

Planetarium Movie By Ollie St Joseph’s Primary School’s 3/4 classes went to the Planetari-um at Science Works in Melbourne to see the movie Tilt. The movie was about the seasons on Earth. The seasons on Earth are made by the Earth’s tilt. In the first part of the movie it was about a brother and sister, Annie and Max, and Max’s robot Calvin. My favourite part of the movie was when Max knocked Earth out of its place. It was funny when all the sea-sons went crazy. The second part of the movie was about Aus-tralia’s night sky and its constellations and star formations like the Southern Cross, Scorpion, Emu and Brolga.

Planetarium Movie By Thomas K All the 3/4 classes at St Joseph’s Primary School went to Science Works. We watched a movie called Tilt. There were two parts to the show. The first part was a fictional movie about the seasons. The characters were Annie, Max and Calvin. Annie was doing a school project, which Max broke and caused the seasons to happen in her room. In the second part a man named David showed us about Vic-toria’s night sky constellations. I liked how the effects made it look so real. Overall I would recommend young kids to go to the Planetarium because you can learn so much about the night sky and how seasons occur. Planetarium By Davide Yesterday we went to the Planetarium at Science Works. It was fantastic. It was really run and I really enjoyed it. We got to watch a movie and it spun us around and we got to play on the playground and we went up stairs and there were really cool things up there. I give it five out of five stars. I learnt so much about planets and constellations.

Planetarium By Lily Yesterday I went to Science Works and we watched a movie in the Planetarium. The movie was called Tilt. After that we had lunch in a room that looked like a dome. Then we had a play on the coolest playground ever! The playground contained a train, climbing structure and a cool swing. Then after that we went to Sports Works. Sports Works has a bike and rock climbing wall and a space station, a teleporter and we be-came a Star Wars character. We got to race Cathy Freeman. I loved it and hopefully I can make Mum and Dad come next time. Film Review by Rylee Somerville Title: Tilt What was the film about? This film is about a girl called Annie who had a science project about the seasons but she didn’t have the tilt of the Earth. Calvin the robot took her to space and told her all about it. Who would this film be suitable for? This film would be suitable for ages 8 and up. Would you recommend the film? I would recommend the film because it is good to learn even if you already know something about it. I would give this film 5 out of 5 stars.
