GreetinGs from st. Jude of the Lake CathoLiC sChooL and welcome to the 2019 – 2020 school year. since its founding in 1954, st. Jude has provided the very best elementary education to our students, kindergarten through currently fifth Grade. Throughout our proud 65-year history, st. Jude of the Lake has been a place where students are intellectually ambitious, engaged, and curious about the world in which they live. our students are faith-filled, compassionate, creative,

and filled with desire to meet new challenges.

on any given day, our classrooms are full of activities and ideas that challenge and inspire our students. our amazing teachers work hard to create an exceptional learning environment for our students. our major focus on leadership begins in the classrooms of our youngest students and culminates in fifth grade when our oldest students take on the responsibility of being the school’s student leaders.

Throughout the year, exciting things are happening in our classrooms and around our community! We encourage you to get involved by joining our early Catholic family Life-Parent Pray and Play Group, home and school and school advisory Committees, numerous volunteer opportunities with school activities, and taking an active role in your child’s education. You are the best gift you can give your child. You are your child’s most important teacher. spend time with your child. The elementary years go quickly, but they are among the most important and fundamental years of your child’s life. it is my desire to keep the focus on increasing student achievement and doing whatever it takes to help aLL our students be successful and enjoy coming to school each day. i believe that learning should be fun and that an elementary school should pave the way for a lifetime of learning.

Whether you are a first-time visitor, reader or are already a member of our community, i encourage you to explore st. Jude of the Lake Catholic school (www.stjudeofthelake.org), discover the activities and programs happening in our classrooms. Come see our campus and feel the excitement and energy our children emulate every day. take a tour, meet our faculty and staff, and see for yourself why we call this our haPPY PLaCe. Please don’t hesitate to let us know if we can be of any assistance. We are here to help you and, most importantly, to help your child be successful!

Thank you for being a part of our st. Jude of the Lake Community and allowing us to walk together!

dear Brothers and sisters in Christ,

my first few months at st. Jude of the Lake Catholic Church and school have been tremendously blessed! Thank you for welcoming me so warmly into the st. Jude’s family. Please allow me to introduce myself to you and share part of my vision for our Catholic school.

Catholic schools have always played an important role in my life. i attended the same Catholic school system in southern ohio from kindergarten through senior year. When my Catholic faith and love for Jesus came fully alive in college, i felt called to help younger

generations in their faith experience, especially those who attended Catholic schools like me. This led me to work with Catholic youth for six years with net ministries in West st. Paul.

since my ordination, i have been able to serve at two parishes with parochial schools and invest in students’ personal lives and education. as an associate pastor at all saints in Lakeville and now the parochial administrator at st. Jude’s, i have made the schools a priority in my ministry. Building on my experience of Catholic education, i take it as my mission to share how religion is much more than a class, but rather the animating factor in our lives as Christians. faith is caught more than it is taught, so i work to ensure that our schools help students practice the faith as they study it.

as we focus on great teachers and an exceptional curriculum at st. Jude’s, we must realize that the greatest asset we can offer students is the power to think with Catholic principles and engage the culture with the knowledge and love of Jesus Christ. Catholic education must always uphold excellence while also being evangelistic. our goal is not to shelter young people from the world, but to teach them how to engage in the world with a robust understanding of who God is and who we are as sons and daughters made in his image and redeemed in Christ.

i find great joy in my role in the school as i personally engage with students during lunch, mass, rosary over the Pa system and school activities. Being with the kids comes natural to me, because i’m an uncle of 10 nieces and nephews ranging in ages from 18 to 4 years old. in the moments that i’m with the students at st. Jude’s, i witness an excitement to come to school, love for fellow students and faculty, and participation in mass and prayer throughout the day.

our school has an inclusive, family atmosphere where students have fun with one another and enjoy experiential learning, like with our new aquaponics lab. We continually show students that they are known and loved, which helps support positive self-esteem and feelings of self-worth. But our supreme goal is always forming disciples and helping them fall in love with Jesus.

Catholic education is ultimately the Gospel in action. We constantly strive to fulfill the command of Jesus in matthew 28:19-20, to “go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit, teaching them to observe all that i have commanded you.”

God Love You!

Samantha Erickson, Kindergarten Assistant, Title One, and Learning Support In my classroom, students K-5 receive individualized support, guided specifically toward their learning needs. We work with many different tools, games, and instructional strategies in order to maximize their potential. Each session provides the opportunity for individual or small group connections, supplement and/or support the learning that is happening in their classrooms.

Ceci Garcia, Kindergarten Students experience a warm, safe, welcoming environment when in my classroom. They will learn how to become the best version of themselves and build them up as Christ meant them to be. Students will experience hands on activities that are differentiated for their own learning.

Shannon Globensky, First Grade Teachers have the opportunity to make an impact on the world by shaping the future of its citizens. Knowledge is power and when a teacher can light the spark of curiosity in a student, their

minds can be opened to new dreams of discovery. In my classroom, I strive to develop a student’s knowledge of the world around them, while also developing their character, and their ability to work towards their passions. My goal is to educate the whole child - mind, body, and spirit - in a positive classroom community, where all students know they are loved and cared for.

Sarah Moorhouse, Second Grade In my classroom, students are challenged to reach their potential. Through engaging activities, students are motivated and excited to learn. Most importantly though, our class is a community where we learn, respect, and care for one another.

Chuck Scobba, Third Grade In 3rd grade the students feel a sense of belonging, ownership in their feelings and the tasks that they accomplish, and opportunities to shine spiritually for Jesus. Students in 3rd grade are committed to one another and are taught to find the goodness in each one of their classmates. Students are proud of the work that they accomplish in 3rd grade and are

expressing their thoughts through truth, goodness and beauty.

Jeanne Thoemke, Fourth Grade Each child enters my classroom with unique life experiences, prior knowledge, and many abilities. As their teacher, it is my responsibility to understand where each child is emotionally, academically, physically, socially, and spiritually. I provide support and encouragement in areas they struggle in and provide challenging learning experiences that will foster their growth in each of these areas. I meet a child’s individual needs when I know a child’s academic interests, family members, pets, and activities involved in outside of school such as clubs, lessons, or sports teams. I foster a nurturing environment in which all children are respected for who they are and can learn without fear of failure.

Jill Ryan, Fifth Grade In our classroom, students experience an environment filled with love, understanding, and learning. Children are encouraged to utilize their background knowledge and interests

to enhance learning of concepts. We accept each other for who we are and build upon our strengths to help others. The students use the science lab and social studies projects to become both collaborative and independent learners.

Katie Cooley, Spanish In Spanish class, students experience engaging activities that introduce them to Spanish speaking cultures. The Spanish classroom is a comfortable and fun place to absorb new information and take risks. Through interactive songs, stories, and games, students learn and practice the language.

Diane Noll, Music In music class, students sing a variety of music, play instruments and move to the beat. We learn about music symbols, and how the rhythm of music works! We worship God weekly at mass with our songs! We prepare for and perform wonderful concerts to bring joy to our audiences.

Anthony Sicora, Physical Education Students will experience a wide variety of individual and team sports and

activities. The students are introduced to sports such as football, lacrosse and gymnastics. They also get introduced to activities such as rock climbing, team building, and dance. Students will also experience a safe, fun and engaging classroom.

Laura Brytowski, Art When students enter the art room, my hope is that they can come down and relax. It is a room to let their minds bring their creativity to life! To give them freedom to understand that in art there is NEVER a right or wrong answer!

Laurie Barclay, Office Administrator Our families and students come into the building and leave with smiles on their faces. They get a warm welcoming feeling everywhere they are in the building. The students can’t wait to come to school!

Stephanie Jakoblich, Marketing and Alumni Coordinator Our students experience the love of learning and love of school family at St. Jude of the Lake Catholic School.

I don’t have to look hard to see this love for learning and love for others as I pass through the school hallways. There is an organic joy that comes from the people and the environment here. The family-feel and the connections students make with staff and with each other are so valuable to growing the whole child, academically, socially, and spiritually.

Kari McGrath, Enrollment Coordinator The experience of our St Jude of the Lake Community is one of a kind. There is such a love of learning in the building, from both teachers and kids alike. Families, students and staff are constantly engaging in what’s new and what’s next! Without a doubt, there are a wide variety of educational experiences that we offer, but I especially love the life-long learners that are the result!

Polly Schukert, Food Service Director Our students experience a close family/friend atmosphere. The teachers & staff take pride in the kids’ willingness to learn & grow into followers of Jesus.

Religion | | Our Bigger Plan

Strategic Plan Initiatives for 2019-2020 We haVe a strateGiC PLan that is a working and always evolving document. The current strategies and action steps we are concentrating our efforts on are listed below.

Expand marketing efforts and enrollment strategies to increase enrollment.

in addition to our Penguin Power campaign, increased our visibility in print and social media, and outstanding relationship with st. Jude discovery Center, we are discerning whether or not adding a middle school would be feasible and viable.

Develop a school-wide professional development plan. as a staff, we are always looking at and researching a variety of professional

development opportunities in the areas of reading, math, engineering, and science. We have implemented a staff development series each month to introduce and facilitate innovative and engaging ideas that the staff takes ownership of and is excited about. We are also taking our investment in the staff one step further by offering a grant opportunity that encourages out of the box, progressive, innovative thinking. We are encouraging our staff to find and explore their passions then bring it all that excitement back to our community. it is a win-win situation!

Identify consistent means of funding for professional development and provide progress reports.

future funding ideas are a crucial part of the business plan shared with all potential donors. a deliberate effort is being made to provide all our stakeholders and families with up to date information that is going on in our school.

Investigate different and sustainable funding models to support educational programs.

We are being very diligent and aggressive in our grant writing. We have a team of grant writing enthusiasts identified and who are willing to help cast out our net.

Use assessment data in a consistent manner to guide curriculum and instruction decisions.

We are more deliberate in our communication with students and parents on state- wide standards, curriculum and strategies. We are using, several different methods of assessment to help us better serve our students needs with and to help create their personalized learning plans. These efforts include better use of technology, collaboration with other teachers and a variety of hands-on assessment tools.

skiLLs are What makes us Confident and indePendent in Life. They are essential for feeling successful.

st. Jude of the Lake Catholic school is proud to offer a variety of “extra” special activities for our students. We are blessed to be able to tap into our alumni and parish community, asking them to share their time and talents, passing along their knowledge, stories, and passions to our students. in the past we have offered activities such as pottery, soap felting, primitive rug hooking, and cooking. This year were excited to offer wool punching, and creative cooking experience. for the 2019-2020 school year, we are planning to build birdhouses. an “extra” special benefit to this program is while our students are indulging in these activities, our staff participates in professional development or collaboration time, allowing them to continue to learn new trends and skills to share with their class.

LiNkS Life Involves New Kinds of Skills

We are VerY exCited to have st. Jude discovery Center (stJdC) a part of our school community. stJdC does an amazing job creating a meaningful learning experience

St. Jude of the Lake Catholic School | www.StJudeoftheLakeSchool.org14 15St. Jude of the Lake Catholic School | www.StJudeoftheLakeSchool.org

Technically, my first year as a parishioner here at St. Jude of the Lake was 1964. I was 1 when we moved to Mahtomedi. My first year as a St. Jude of the Lake schoolboy was 1969. My 8th grade graduation year was 1977 and I celebrated this life event alongside 34 fellow eighth graders that year. as i reflect, i can confirm that i was not a model student. in fact, i was often a thorn in the side of the wonderful nuns and teachers that were tasked by my antics for 9 months of the year. i am forever grateful to them for never giving up on me during these formidable years. my experiences and their devotion shaped my character and clearly set the foundation of my life choices and more importantly, my faith choices.

father Chad recently stated a staggering statistic that i haven’t been able to wrap my arms around. our youth are now making their faith choice by the time they are 13 years old! i am not sure what the average age was back in my day but this is at minimum, a very enlightening statistic. as a parent, a wake-up call and gamechanger in my opinion.

after much discerning and some reluctance, i accepted the “suggestion” of father Cory to join the school advisory

Council back in 2017. to learn shortly after, the position was as Chairperson. seriously, i wanted to run. i love our school but, me? ok, i sent all my kids to school here. my wife, God bless her, managed these busy years while i spent most of the school weeks on the road pursuing income opportunities. although we were actively involved in many ways within the Parish, the school management gene most certainly resided within the dna of mom. This is not my area of expertise! What do i do now?! how can i possibly be of help?

slowly, and after much mentorship by father Cory, the motivated and accepting members of the saC, along with truly amazing school leadership, i have come to understand the mission. our kids and our Catholic faith. i don’t think there is a mission any more fundamental and meaningful than this.

again, as i reflect on my 34 other 8th grader compadres and my 55 years as a st. Jude of the Lake alum, i clearly see the need for God’s work to continue through the mission of st. Jude of the Lake Catholic school.

st. Jude of the Lake school is growing again and leading the way through faith-based learning and a seriously leading-edge curriculum. it’s a choice that merits your attention and consideration as a parent and the timing couldn’t be better, for a long list of reasons. it’s always about our faith and our kids. What better gift can be offered to our community and our future generations? i am blessed. strike that, we are all blessed with the opportunity to make a difference, especially as our kids contemplate the life changing faith decision, they are faced with making by the time they are in the 8th grade.

our school-wide event strives to develop Christ-likeness in each of our students. our serVe-a-thon took place friday, october 25, 2019. in our effort to make great disciples, we believe active participation in service is a critical part of our students’ learning experience. our serVe-a-thon seeks to meet the needs in our community while offering tangible ways to express lessons learned in the classroom. historically, our students have been involved in a variety of service activities and projects. The opportunities have always been a meaningful way to invest time, talent and treasure and impact the lives of other people throughout the community. These experiences are a real extension of our faith- based, hands-on curriculum.

in addition to our year-round, all-school service project, The Blessing Box, we added another very special fourth-grade student led initiative. This year, our PenGWinners’ time was spent working their way through a random acts of service calendar. each day presented different prayerful service opportunities that were designed to cause a powerful ripple effect of joy in the lives of others.

as a school community, we are excited for the opportunity to serve others and support our school financially. This is the only fundraising activity our school does that seeks out sponsored donations. This school year, our sponsors will take delight in seeing our excitement and desire to help others and meet the needs of our community and surrounding areas.

When our students share their gifts with others, they are putting their faith into action, being doers and not just hearers; serving others, not just themselves.

Blessing Box The idea of a Blessing Box is that anyone that passes by it, that is down on their luck, can take what they need to get through the day. The box is filled with non-perishable food and personal hygiene items. This is not a food shelf. tough luck hits everyone at one time or another, sometimes only lasting a day or two. This is an opportunity to take what is needed and most helpful at the time.

our community is so generous with our gifts of time, talent, and treasure. as a parish and school community, we come together and prayer for one another. We hold a strong desire to help each other out. The beauty of service project is that it has no limitations on who can help or who can be helped. The invitation is open to everyone. The warm feeling of paying it forward is felt by anyone that participates.

The project is set up to encourage people to donate what they can, such as a canned or boxed good or toothbrush and toothpaste. an additional list of ideas is below. There will be a depository in the Church gathering space. each of our school classroom are assigned and responsible for 1 month of making sure the box is taken care of and has plenty of “blessings” to share. everyone is encouraged to donate what they can, making this project open to anyone to pay it forward. We want to stress that showing little and random acts of kindness really can make a huge difference in someone’s day and life!

socioeconomic playing field for families who have enough to worry about, and

they give the entire student body a whole new appreciation for navy blue

pants, jumpers, shorts, polos, and sweatshirts.

9. Where else can you experience all the splendor?

Our students have the wonderful opportunity to experience grace

filled bonding moments in communal activities such as celebrating weekly mass and rosary, May Crowning, All Saints Day Masses, Ash Wednesday, Lent activities, Stations of the Cross, and the Living Rosary. Then there are the sacraments — we celebrate all the “Firsts” together with Reconciliation,

Communion, and Confirmation.

8. Three letters: CSW.CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK IS THE BEST WEEK EVER! For those who

have attended Catholic school know this is a week of celebrating the

palpable joy found within our school walls. The week reminds us to pause and reflect on the God-given gift of each and every one of our students and families - the source of our joy

and reason that our school is our HAPPY PLACE!

7. It is very affordable.Don’t assume that you cannot afford a Catholic education for your children. Tuition can be expensive, but you’d be surprised how much support our school receives from very generous donors that believe so passionately about the amazing gift of Catholic education that they want to make it a reality for your family too. It is

definitely worth investigating before you come to the conclusion it is not

a possibility.

6. We guide and lead.

When our students share their gifts with others, they are

putting their faith into action, being doers and not just

hearers, serving others, not just themselves.

5. We provide automatic backup.

Parents are the primary teachers of their own kids, but they need support from time to time. Catholic schools can provide independent affirmation of the moral values and cardinal virtues you try to instill in your children. What’s

more is that our students will see their friends and classmates at weekend

Mass, which makes them more willing to attend without a fuss. That’s what

I call “positive peer pressure.”

4. We have the MOST dedicated teachers and administrators.

Where else will you find such awesome, motivated, energetic, creative, talented, patient, warm, caring, and appreciative individuals to entrust with the academic and moral formation of your children? Our amazing staff share their gifts of

teaching with our students and will be among the most influential people in

their lives — and they’re not in it for the money, I assure you. Our teachers love

your children and have a passion for what they do!

3. Strong academics.

We take great pride in our focus of individualized learning through our use of small class sizes and

1:1 technology. Studies show that a more personal teacher-student

relationship results in more effective, efficient learning.

2. We plant the seeds.Years of Catholic education does not guarantee a virtuous life, nor does it automatically prevent your child

from straying off the right path. What Catholic education does, however,

is plant the seed of the Catholic faith, which develops a well-formed

conscience that, despite the ravages of opposition and neglect of religion

as a priority, may someday experience the amazing grace that leads your

now-adult child back to the full embrace of the Church and the true

love of Jesus Christ.
