Believing In Jesus Christ

Throughout the Easter season, all three of the Sunday readings are taken from the New Testament—the Chris-tian scriptures. Together they explore what it means to believe in Jesus as the Christ, the One who fulfilled the prophecies of the Jewish scriptures.

Today’s selections refer to our human weakness, yet they emphasize the forgiveness and peace that are avail-able to those who put their faith in “Jesus Christ the righteous one” (1 John 2:2). In the Acts of the Apostles Peter invites everyone to “repent, therefore, and be con-verted, that your sins may be wiped away” (Acts 3:19). The First Letter of John calls Jesus Christ “expiation for our sins” (1 John 2:2). Finally, in the Gospel Jesus greets the disciples with “Peace” and urges them to preach “repentance, for the forgiveness of sins” (Luke 24:47).

Today’s Readings

First Reading — The God of our fathers has glorified his servant Jesus. Acts 3:13-15, 17-19 Psalm — Lord, let your face shine on us. Psalm 4 Second Reading — The way we may be sure that we know Jesus is to keep his commandments. 1 John 2:1-5a Gospel — Jesus stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” Luke 24:35-48

Home Missions Collection

Next weekend, April 21 & 22, we participate in a spe-cial collection for mission parishes in the United States and its dependencies. This appeal strengthens the Church at home by supporting Catholic communities in need. It assists dioceses that serve the pastoral needs of Hispanics, and other ethnic groups. It enables Catholic parishes in the poor and remote communities to provide Mass, the Sacraments, and Religious Education for their people. The Home Missions Appeal gives us a chance to respond to the Father’s call to love our neighbor.

Vocation Brief

Christ spoke of the talents each one of us has, talents which must not be buried. Our calling is to take those talents, develop them fully, and then use them in estab-lishing His kingdom on earth. Are you using your tal-ents to fulfill your vocation to service? Are you an ac-tive Christian in the parish, at your workplace, and in the home? Take some time today to reflect on how you might use your special talents in the service of the King-dom.

Well, not really . . . But let’s pretend that He is. The din of talking and laughter in the narthex before Mass ech-oes around the church, making it difficult for people to pray and collect themselves before Mass. Please help make the narthex a quiet place: keep the noise down! The inner narthex between the sacristy, bride’s room, and holy water font should be a place of absolute quiet. Thanks for helping us all to pray better.

In gratitude, I offer myself to You, asking for the grace to keep You first in my heart.

Help me to use everything You have given me to serve You, my parish, and all those around me. Amen
