From Cheers to Jeers

The crowds cheer crying out “Hosanna.” Nothing can stop them. They feel set free, throwing out on the road their leafy branches and cloaks, their version of a ticker tape parade. Then silence. There is silence until the crowds shout “Crucify him.” What happened? What empty fantasies did they have during the parade that vanished and caused them to be changeable? Jesus re-mains unchanged. Even by riding on a donkey he seems to make fun of the champion’s war horse thereby steadi-ly proclaiming peace even as he rides to have unspeaka-ble violence done to him. But the crowds have no sub-stance, no souls.

How about us? We may sit in church and hear this story read to us, and feel sorry for those people who did not understand. Do we understand? We can process around the church waving our palm branches. But if we do not process into the world to feed the hungry, clothe the na-ked, give drink to the thirsty and visit the sick and pris-oners we are fickle changeable people who the next day are crying out “Crucify him.” We may not use those very words. But what do our actions or lack of action say?

However, the Deacon at the end of Mass regularly calls us to faithfulness by proclaiming, “Let us go into the world glorifying the Lord by our life.”

Deacon Corney

Good Friday Holy Land Collection

The daily news reminds us of the violence and instabil-ity plaguing the Middle East, but we rarely hear of the shrinking Christian community there, a community that struggles to remain in the land of Christ’s birth, death, and resurrection. Please help us support our brothers and sisters in the Holy Land by giving to the special col-lection on Good Friday, March 30. This Pontifical Col-lections allows the Franciscans and others to continue caring for Christianity’s holiest sites and for God’s peo-ple in the Holy Land. Please be generous in your sup-port.

Vocation Brief

Family life can build values integral to a strong voca-tion—whether to priesthood, religious life or marriage. Teaching your children to value commitment, service and prayer will help them make strong vocation deci-sions as adults and live out those vocations with success and fulfillment.

Social Ministry News Our Lenten journey is almost over! Easter is almost here! Christ enters into Jerusalem, drawing close to the trail that He knows awaits Him. He is doing this for you. Will you continue on the journey with Him to vic-tory, or will you be like many in the crowd, waving palms, only to turn away in a few days? We are called to be the hands and feet of Christ. We are called to reach out to those only Jesus could love.

We are surrounded by society’s lepers—the poor, the disabled, the immigrant, the elderly. Can you volunteer at a hospital or nursing home, or help a neighbor get used to a new country’s way of life? You may be the only Jesus these people see. Don’t turn away.

Sincere thanks to everyone for your generous almsgiv-ing during this Lenten season. May God bless you and keep you safe.
