BRUNO OR BRUTUS? I must confess that when I was an Altar Server, I found the name of the man we honor on the day he died in 1101, on what is now his Feast Day, October 6, quite humorous. Perhaps because I watched too
many cartoons, I confused him with Popeye’s nemesis, Brutus, aka Bluto. But Saint Bruno was no obnoxious, crude or unschooled brut; nor was he a pushover! He so rigorously, forcefully set the norms for the Carthusians, whom he established, that it was known as the Religious Order that ”never needed to be reformed - because it was never deformed.” More about the life of Saint Bruno and the Carthusians after praying the Collect offered at holy Mass on his Feast Day.
A SIMPLE START. Born in 1030 into a prominent family near Cologne, Germany, we know little about Saint Bruno’s early years. He studied theology in what is now Rheims, France, and was probably ordained in Germany around 1055. A year later, he returned to Rheims as headmaster of the school he had attended. After twenty years of service as a renowned theologian and philosopher, he was appointed chancellor of the Archdiocese of Rheims.
THE ‘SEE’ TURNS ROUGH. That’s not a mistake; the Latin word for ‘chair’ - ‘sedes’ - gives us the word ‘see’ as in ‘Holy See’ [Sancta Sedes/Holy Chair] for the Diocese of Rome. And it turned into a rough ‘see’ for Rheims’ chancellor after he supported Pope Gregory VII’s removal of Rheims’ scandalous archbishop, who ransacked and robbed the homes of any clergy who criti-cized his escapades; he even plundered Saint Bruno’s possessions! After the archbishop was finally deposed, the Holy Father offered Saint Bruno that See’ - but he declined -
Collect - Saint Bruno, Priest
O God, who called Saint Bruno to serve you in solitude,
grant, through his intercession, that amid the changes of this world
we may constantly look to you alone. Through our Lord Jesus … for ever and ever.
Amen.
‘so he is often depicted with a bishop’s miter and crozier ‘cast aside.’ ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. All this left such a bitter taste in his mouth, Saint Bruno decided to live a simple life of prayer and solitude. With six other Priests who also renounced all their possessions, they accepted a gift of land in southeast France called ‘la Grande Chartreuse.’ Its desert-like, mountainous terrain and inaccessibility was the perfect place for hermits to live in small numbers, silence, and poverty. They named their Order ‘the Carthusians’ in honor of that area; they only gath-ered for daily prayer and a rare festive meal; and they supported themselves by the then-painstaking job of copying manuscripts.
INQUIRING MINDS WANT TO KNOW. Yes, it was the Carthusians who, in the 1600’s, developed the recipe for the French liqueur which also bears the name of that region, Chartreuse, and the name of that beverage’s color. But there were no distilleries there in the days of Saint Bruno, only small cells and very crude furnishings.
ANOTHER ROUGH ‘SEE.’ In 1088, one of Saint Bruno’s former students took over the Holy See: Pope Urban II, who called him to Rome to assist in another ‘squabble.’ Not only was the hostile Holy Roman Emperor Henry IV seeking to end Pope Urban’s papacy; a renegade bishop claimed that he was the true Pope! Reluctantly, Saint Bruno went off to Rome, and eventually went into exile with Pope Urban when he had to flee from Rome for his life. In the end, Pope Urban offered to name Saint Bruno a bishop, but instead he asked if he could return to the quietness of monastic life, and the Holy Father agreed. He lived out the last years of his life in the place he had so desired, falling asleep in death in the arms of his brother monks on October 6, 1101 at the age of 71.
A SIMPLE ENDING. Although the current process of canonizing Saints: a petition to the Pope; a lengthy investigation; a formal papal declaration and ceremony was the norm by the 900’s, Saint Bruno was never officially canonized. [Before that, Saints were named by acclamation.] Since Carthusian humility shuns public spectacles, Saint Bruno was simply ‘added’ to the list of Saints by Pope Gregory XV in 1623, and his Feast Day was extended to the whole Church by Pope Clement 1674. Saint Bruno, pray for us.
