First Black Female Tactical Aircraft Pilot
The U.S. Navy's first Black female tacti-cal aircraft pilot, Lt. j.g. Madeline G. Swegle, received her "Wings of Gold" on July 31, 2020, marking a historic milestone for naval aviation.
The "Wings of Gold" marks an avia-tor's official completion of basic heli-copter training in naval flight school. Swegle, a Virginia native who gradu-ated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 2017, became the Navy's first Black
female strike pilot after completing tacti-cal strike training on July 7.
She will now report to the "Vikings" of Electronic Attack Squadron 129 at Na-val Air Station Whidbey Island in Wash-ington to begin training as an EA-18G Growler pilot. “I’m excited to have this opportunity to work harder and fly high performance jet aircraft in the fleet,” Swegle said in a statement. “It would’ve been nice to see someone who looked like me in this role; I never intended to be the first. I hope it’s encouraging to other people.”

I want to take this opportunity, once again, to thank you and congratulate you on your commitment to collective work and responsibility (Ujima). The Archdiocese is making one more push for the 2020 Catholic Appeal. Given the devasta-tion that the Coronavirus has had on all aspects of our society, fundraising of any kind has taken a significant hit.
However, St. Katharine Drexel Parish can take pride in our ability to have attained 77% of our goal having contributed $9,135.00. This is in large part due to your generosity and care for the ministry of the Archdiocese, and to the concert-ed efforts of our Appeal Team, Carolyn Caveny, Francis Ibili, and Gerry Lake. I am very grateful to them for their leader-ship in this endeavor.
If you have not had the opportunity to do so but would like to participate in the Catholic Appeal, there are still envelopes available or you can call in and we can assist you in the process.
Please know that your efforts are a tremendous witness to the entire Archdiocese of Boston, and we can be proud to be seen as leaders in this great work.
