—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. Careful readers of the “Treasures” will have noticed that the two col-umns about the oldest monastic communities in the United States refer to the colonial states. The Louisiana Purchase gained a great treasure for our nation, the Ursuline monastery of New Orleans. Among the greatest pioneers of that city were nuns who came from France on a perilous voyage in 1727, pestered by pirates and tossed by fearsome storms. These were genteel, well-educated Ursulines, yet their first task was to roll up their sleeves and open a hospital to care for the pesti-lence-ridden colony. Next, they opened a school for girls and launched a plan to educate the women being shipped over from France to marry settlers. In this way, they had enormous influence in molding patterns of family and domestic life. At Christmastime in 1814, the threat of a British assault on the city was growing. On the terrifying night of January 7, 1815, the women of New Orleans gathered in the monastery chapel to pray that the city be spared from destruction in battle. The mother superior made a vow to have a Mass of Thanksgiving on that date every year should the Ameri-cans win. That night, Our Lady of Prompt Succor, to whom the nuns had great devotion, became the protector and patron of this great city. The convent in the French Quarter is the oldest standing building in the Mississippi valley, and the only surviving building of the French colonial period. The nuns relocated in 1824, but their old monastery is pre-served as a museum and archives for the Archdiocese of New Orleans. The school the nuns began, Ursuline Academy, is the oldest continu-ously operating Catholic school, and school for women, in the United States. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Thank You!

Remember O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaid-ed. Inspired by this confidence I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

WHOEVER EATS THIS BREAD WILL LIVE FOREVER

Are you or someone you know interested in becoming Catholic? Perhaps you (or some-one you know) would like to complete the Sacraments of First Holy Communion and/or Confirmation. Please consider attending RCIA. Classes will begin in September. If interested or if you would like more infor-mation, contact the Parish Office @ 847-468-6900.

STRENGTHENED BY THE BREAD OF LIFE

Today we resume the “Bread of Life” discourse from John’s Gospel that began two weeks ago. He makes reference to the Jews’ ancestors who ate manna in the desert. These days we would think primarily of Israel wandering in the desert, but faith-ful Jews would also have known the story of Elijah that we hear today. Strengthened by food and drink in the desert, the angel of the Lord sends him on his forty-day and forty-night journey (the biblical number for a preparation time). Like the food given to Elijah in the desert, Jesus tells his listeners that he is bread for the life of the world. It is very important that we not stop listening to Jesus after his promise of eternal life—a marvelous promise, but this “reward” is not the only reason we feast on the Bread of Life. We also come to the table to be made strong for the jour-ney of mission, that the whole world might have life in the full-ness of Christ. We are compelled, if we have eaten of the bread of life, to go forth in service to all. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

During the month of July, through your gifts, the Society of St Vincent de Paul brought the love and care of Jesus to the poor in out communi-ty by assisting 105 families. We provided food, $3,013.00 for utilities, $4,232.00 for rent, and $250.00 in gas cards and bus passes. Thank you!

As long as anger lives, she continues to be the fruitful mother of many unhappy children. St. John Climacus

When life squeezes you I am sure that if you squeeze a lime you will get lime juice, but if you squeeze an orange you will get orange juice, or if you squeeze a lemon you will get lemon juice. We cannot get orange juice from a lime or a lemon; neither can we get lemon juice from a lime or an orange. When you have a problem with your family or friends, when you got into a difficult situation or even in a traffic incident, how do you react? In other words how do you react when the circumstances of your life squeezes you? Do you react with anger, wrath, or violence? Or do you react calmly, composure, and intelligently? Whatever comes out of us when life squeezes us that is what is inside of us. If what comes out of us is not good, we can change it. We are not condemned like a fruit that cannot change its juices. Our call is to fill our lives with the things of God, so that when life squeezes us, our actions and reactions may be fruits form God.

There are three prayers that are unique for each daily Mass: the Open-ing Prayer, the Prayer Over the Gifts, and the Prayer After Commun-ion. If the Mass is in honor of the Blessed Mother, those three prayers will be related to her. If the Mass is in honor of a martyr, the three pray-ers will be related to that martyr.

When the priest prays the Opening Prayer and the Prayer After Com-munion, he invites everyone present to pray by saying, “Let us pray.” But he does not make this invitation for the Prayer Over the Gifts, be-cause the people just stood to pray the “Orate Fratres” and they are already in a disposition of prayer.

The rubrics state: “With hands extended, the priest sings or prays the prayers over the gifts, at the end of which the people respond ‘Amen.’”

Why does the priest extend his hands? Once again it is ‘body lan-guage’ that shows that he and the entire congregation are ‘open’ to the gifts that God wants to give them.
