Second Sunday of Lent in Ordinary time March 17, 2019

In Luke’s account of the Transfiguration, which we hear in today’s Gos-pel, a voice from the heavens calls out, “This is my chosen Son; listen to him.” At that, Peter, John, and James fall silent, enabling them to listen to the Lord. Let us take this opportunity during our Lenten journey to listen to Jesus and reflect on what he is saying to us. Between the first reading and the Gospel, we hear of three of the main figures of the Hebrew scriptures: Abraham, Moses, and Elijah. All three encountered God repeatedly and dramatically. Fire is often used in scripture to symbolize the presence of God. We hear today of the flam-ing torch that bound the covenant God made with Abraham. We know the stories of Moses seeing God in the burning bush and Elijah taken up to heaven in a fiery chariot. We cannot expect that God will speak with us so dramatically. But if we do not listen, we may fail to realize that God speaks to us today.

By now, many may have failed in Lenten discipline to some measure or another: the daily doughnut is simply too alluring, or a furtive puff on a cigarette irresistible. There is meaning even in the failure, though, a kind of reminder that we cannot save ourselves. Part of the power of Lent is that we do it together, and although individuals decide on different ways to keep it, it is fundamentally the same journey. We fall, we get up, we keep moving. The desire to “give something up” for Lent is an age‑old impulse in the Christian heart. We get better at it over the years, and move more deeply into the meaning and message of acts of sacrifice; so there is no shame in stumbling, as long as we are not discouraged by the failure and give up. We are clearing space in our lives, after all, and some of the things we desire to give up are worth rooting out completely any-way.

What do we do with the space we have cleared out by our sacrifice? The Lenten question of giving up is balanced by the Easter question of our response to Christ’s embrace of us in love: “What are you taking on for Easter?” James Field

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM

Psalm 27:1

Biblical stewardship is one of the pri-mary ways God calls us to live our life. It’s a theme in the Bible you can trace

from Genesis to Revelation. It’s a calling rooted in creation, highlighted throughout the Bible, and influences the way you live your life for the glory of God. To steward is to manage something on someone’s behalf. Whether a family member, friend, or employer asks you to watch over something, then you're stewarding—managing—whatever they entrusted to your care. In the Bible, stewardship is another way of talking about how you live your life. In the New Testament, the word “steward” is rooted in the Greek word “oikonomos,” which means “the manager of a household." In light of Bible verses about stewardship below, you’ll see that your life is not your own. Your life is on loan from God—regardless if you acknowledge this or not—and God calls you to steward everything about your life for his glo-ry and the good of others. In the New Testament. In Colossians, we read, “For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth… all things were created through him and for him” (Col. 1:15-16). The foundation of stewardship is built upon this reality. “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” God calls us to manage what he created on his be-half. But he also commands us to work and take care of ourselves and family financially. In doing so, you will fight with the tension of providing for yourself and your family while facing the temptation to covet others belongings and love money itself. God commands you to give gen-erously. "The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compul-sion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”
