“Beware the Ides of March!” (Soothsayer to Julius Caesar in Shakespeare’s play, Act 1, Scene 2)

Caesar’s friend, Brutus, is with him when he hears this warning. But Brutus is already part of the conspiracy to assassinate Julius on the day in question. Brutus then becomes synonymous with betrayal, just as Judas Iscariot is for Jesus Christ. The one thing that Brutus and Judas have in common is that they were both convinced that their actions of betrayal were for the good of the nation.

It is so often the case that people in general argue themselves into believing that something is good, even though they know deep in their own consciences that what they are doing is evil. It’s called, “rationalizing.” We convince ourselves that something evil is actually good. In our times, there are so many arguments regarding abortion to rationalize it and make it seem good. The mayors of Minneapolis and St. Paul declared March 10 as “Abortion Provider Appreciation Day.” How did we get to this? When did taking innocent life become something to be celebrated and honored? Archbishop Bernard Hebda condemned the move in very strong terms and encouraged the people of these cities to write to their respective mayors to voice their strong disagreement and even disgust. As Catholics, we must be more pro-active in calling society to task for allowing and even encouraging the evil of abortion. Make no mistake about it: failure to address this evil will be part of what we will judged on by the Lord. Evil depends on lies, misdirection and even the belief that it is somehow good. We cannot allow ourselves to be tricked, bullied or cajoled into accepting such an idea that abortion on demand as something good. May God continue to strengthen our bishops and the Church in our striving to shine the light of truth, no matter how many people believe otherwise. If we don’t we will be betraying the innocent children in the womb.

Lenten regulations for Catholics These are the MINIMUM for Lent. All are encouraged to thoughtfully consider going beyond these minimum regulations.

The Christian faithful are to do penance through prayer and fasting, abstinence and by exercising works of piety and charity. All Fridays through the year, especially during Lent, are penitential days.

Abstinence: All who have reached their 14th birthday are to abstain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday and on all Fridays of Lent.

Fasting: All those who are 18 or older, until their 59th birthday, are to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Only one full meal is allowed on days of fast. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one’s need; but together, they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed. The obligation does not apply to those whose health or ability to work would be affected seriously. People in doubt about fast or abstinence should consult a priest.

CHANGES FOR MASSES DURING FLU & COLDS SEASON

In response to concerns expressed, I have decided to do the following:

• We will not have communion from the chalice until it is deemed safe to resume it.

This means only one communion minister is needed to assist me and another to bring the Eucharist to the choir.

• For the Sign of Peace, members are encouraged to refrain from shaking hands.

• For Communion Ministers, please be sure that you do not shake hands with anyone after sanitizing your hands before distributing Holy Communion.

Please use common sense practices such as frequent hand washing with soap and water, hand sanitizers, and sneezing/coughing into your elbow.
