This year the continuing education portion will help us look at the Psalms of the Bible as a type of prayer, both historically and in todays world. Following this, we will look at better ways to collaborate between deacons and priests, and how to better work in our ministries in general. There will be ample time for prayer, adoration, fellowship and mutual encouragement in our various ministries. It is a time to re-energize ourselves and to form a stronger unity among the clergy. All this happens with Bishop Swain at the center as a focus for us all in sharing the ministry entrusted to him for the diocese. Of special importance is the celebration of milestones in the lives of some individual priests and deacons. Those celebrating 25 years, 50 years and 60 years as ordained clergy will be honored and recognized. We will also continue to explore ways to invite more men into these ministries. Currently we have 14 seminarians and 8 deacon candidates. That s not too bad for a diocese our size, but with the number of pending retirements we will soon be struggling to supply the needs our parishes and institutions have for ordained ministry. We now have a handful of Sacred Heart Fathers and Benedictine priests assisting us. For this reason I have elected to go back to praying our Prayer for Vocations at the end of our petitions at weekend Masses. In addition to this prayer, we all need to double down on our efforts to recognize talented men who would make great priests or deacons, inviting them to look into the formation programs offered by the Church. We keep praying, Choose from our homes those who are needed for your work.God grant us all the courage to truly mean those words and to work with the Holy Spirit to encourage new vocations right in our own communities. Twenty-sixth Sunday of Ordinary Time

This week the deacons and priests of the Sioux Falls Diocese will meet in Chamberlain for our annual Clergy Days. This year the continuing education portion will help us look at the Psalms of the Bible as a type of prayer, both historically and in today’s world.

That’s not too bad for a diocese our size, but with the number of pending retirements we will soon be struggling to supply the needs our parishes and institutions have for ordained ministry. We keep praying, “Choose from our homes those who are needed for your work.” God grant us all the courage to truly mean those words and to work with the Holy Spirit to encourage new vocations right in our own communities.

A Family Perspective by Bud Ozar In today’s gospel the rich man died and was condemned to “a place of torment” because he ignored the poor. He asked Lazarus to go and warn his five brothers to change their ways. Evidently ignoring the poor was a family pattern. Is your family sensitive to the poor?

Words of Wisdom Dr. Chris Burgwald is so excited to continue his new series called Words of Wisdom! At Words of Wisdom, participants will learn from master Dr. John Bergsma by reading his book, Bible Basics for Catholics, on Saturday, October 5th from 9:00am to 4:00pm and then gathering with people from around the diocese at BroomTree Retreat Center for a day of discussion and prayer to unpack the book. Dr. Chris’s desire is that participants will recognize how the book can transform their own lives and how to share what they have learned with others, ultimately with the hope of growing closer to Jesus Christ. Check out the webpage www.sfcatholic.org/wow. Dr. Chris has a video explaining the retreat and the book.

Immaculata Pilgrimage It is so important right now with the troubles and the Un-clarity in the church, that we get as many people as possible closer to our Lord and Lady. This pilgrimage does just that. We start with the shrine of St. Joseph in St. Louis and end with our heavenly

Mother at the shrine of the Miraculous Medal on the way back. Along with participating at Masses and pray at both shrines at EWTN, also being able to be on live TV. Pilgrimage trip to EWTN, starts on September 30th and ending October 5th, see flyer on bulletin board. Contact: Kevin Van Well for details (605)237-1305.
