It is evident from its celebration that the effect of the sacrament of Confirmation is the special outpouring of the Holy Spirit as once granted to the apostles on the day of Pentecost. From this fact, Confirmation brings an increase and deepening of baptismal grace: - it roots us more deeply in the divine filiation which makes us cry, "Abba! Father!"; - it unites us more firmly to Christ; - it increases the gifts of the Holy Spirit in us; - it renders our bond with the Church more perfect; - it gives us a special strength of the Holy Spirit to spread and defend the faith by word and action as true witnesses of Christ, to confess the name of Christ boldly, and never to be ashamed of the Cross. (Catechism of the Catholic Church 1302-3) This Sunday we are honored to have Bishop Donald DeGrood at St. Leo Church to confer the Sacrament of Confirmation on 24 high school freshmen and sophomores from the parishes of St. Vincent (Springfield), St. Leo (Tyndall), St. Wenceslaus (Tabor) and St. John the Baptist (Lesterville- Sigel). This offers all of us an occasion to reflect on our own confirmation and how we are allowing the Holy Spirit to lead us in our lives as Catholics. In uniting us more firmly to Jesus Christ, being confirmed gives us the strength we need to stand with other members of the Church in bearing witness in the world to the gift of salvation. As I interviewed the twelve students from St. Leo and St. Vincent, I was impressed not just with their knowledge of the faith, but more so with their desire to live their faith. The interviews helped me to impress on them that they cant do this alone; that Jesus gave us the Church so we can have each other for support, to challenge us, to guide us and to nourish us. These young people present themselves for Confirmation to receive the Holy Spirit as a gift of God, helping them to become more than any of us could ever be without him. May they be richly blessed and know how much they are loved by God and by us. It is evident from its celebration that the effect of the sacrament of Confirmation is the special outpouring of the Holy Spirit as once granted to the apostles on the day of Pentecost. From this fact, Confirmation brings an increase and deepening of baptismal grace:

- it roots us more deeply in the divine filiation which makes us cry, "Abba! Father!";

- it unites us more firmly to Christ; - it increases the gifts of the Holy Spirit in us; - it renders our bond with the Church more perfect; - it gives us a special strength of the Holy Spirit to spread and defend the

faith by word and action as true witnesses of Christ, to confess the name of Christ boldly, and never to be ashamed of the Cross.

This offers all of us an occasion to reflect on our own confirmation and how we are allowing the Holy Spirit to lead us in our lives as Catholics. Lenten regulations for Catholics These are the MINIMUM for Lent. All are encouraged

to thoughtfully consider going beyond these minimum regulations.

The Christian faithful are to do penance through prayer and fasting, abstinence and by exercising works of piety and charity. All Fridays through the year, especially during Lent, are penitential days.

Abstinence: All who have reached their 14th birthday are to abstain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday and on all Fridays of Lent.

Fasting: All those who are 18 or older, until their 59th birthday, are to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Only one full meal is allowed on days of fast. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one’s need; but together, they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed. The obligation does not apply to those whose health or ability to work would be affected seriously. People in doubt about fast or abstinence should consult a priest.

CHANGES FOR MASSES DURING FLU & COLDS SEASON

In response to concerns expressed, I have decided to do the following:

• We will not have communion from the chalice until it is deemed safe to resume it. This means only one communion minister is needed to assist me and another to bring the Eucharist to the choir.

• For the Sign of Peace, members are encouraged to refrain from shaking hands.

• For Communion Ministers, please be sure that you do not shake hands with anyone after sanitizing your hands before distributing Holy Communion.

Please use common sense practices such as frequent hand washing with soap and water, hand sanitizers, and sneezing/coughing into your elbow.

A Family Perspective by Bud Ozar Transfiguration is a common occurrence in families. When we commit to another, such as a spouse in marriage or a child in parenting, we are not committing to them only as they are today, but to the person they are becoming.
