THE LAST SHALL BE FIRST

Some people consider the story of the workers in the vineyard an

unfair story, because it seems to favour the idler over the hard

worker. Here is another story that may help us to understand the

point Jesus was making.

The final of the 3000 metres was in progress. The runners stayed

bunched together until the last lap. Then the eventual winner eased

himself into the lead. As he did so another man fell back into last

place, after a desperate effort to keep up. The other runners were

strung out in between.

As the leader (a local man) came into the home straight, the

spectators rose to him. When the news was flashed up that he had set

a new world record, thunderous applause echoed around the stadium.

The cameras followed him as he did a lap of honour. He got a

standing ovation as he went around. Bouquets of flowers were

thrown in his direction.

Afterwards everybody wanted to clap him on the back and shake his

hand. Microphones were thrust in front of him. “How does it feel like

to be a world champion?” he was asked. Beaming all over he replied,

“Absolutely wonderful!” Already newspapers were queuing up for

the exclusive rights to his story, and company executives, cheque

books in hand, were doing likewise for the right to us his name to

endorse their products.

While all this was going on, the other runners had finished the race.

The last man had to really struggle to finish. Then, with head bowed,

he departed for the dressing rooms.

A VIP had been invited to perform the prize-giving ceremony. The

first three runners home were waiting, all smiles, to take their places

on the victory podium. The first sign that something unusual was

about to happen was when the VIP said he wanted all the runners

present at the ceremony. The runners were duly called, and all was

now set.

Then what did he do? He called the man who came in last and gave

the gold medal to him. He gave the silver medal to the man who

came second last, and the bronze medal to the man who came third

last. There were gasps of astonishment from the crowd, and sighs of

embarrassment from the organisers. The mistake was pointed

out to him. But he said, “There is no mistake. This is the way I

want it.” Then he proceeded to give a warm handshake to each

of the other runners right down to the man who came first.

When the latter came forward he was very angry. “This is not

fair!” he exclaimed.

“So you think it’s not fair?” The VIP replied calmly.

“I do,” said the man. “I won the race. I deserve to get the gold

medal.”

“Friend,” said the VIP, “haven't you got enough already?”

“What do you mean?” the man asked.

“You’ve had the satisfaction of winning the race. You’ve had

the applause of the crowd and the attention of the media.

You’ve had lucrative contracts offered to you. Now consider

the man who came last. He finished the race too. And what did

he get for his efforts? Nothing. Would it be fairer if you got

everything while he got nothing?” With that the victor was

reduced to silence. Still fuming, he turned and went away.

The aim of this story is not to downplay the achievement of

the winner but to make a point. It seems wrong that one person

should get everything, while another gets nothing. I know this

is exactly what happens in our world - the winner takes all.

Some might still say that the story is an outrageous one. But is

it any more outrageous than Jesus story about the workers in

the vineyard? What point was Jesus making?

The key to understanding the story is in the phrase, “Are you

envious because I am generous?” The story is not about

justice. It is about generosity, a generosity unlike anything

we’ve ever known - the generosity of God.

Which of us would like to be treated by God according to

strict justice? Do we not all long for mercy rather than justice?

We can’t put God in our debt. But we don’t need to. God is

generous to a degree that far outstrips human generosity. All

we have to do is open our hearts to God’s generosity. And

having experienced it, let it serve as a model for our dealings

with others.

On behalf of the parishioners and Fr Antony, we would like to thank all who supported this function, through the purchase of tickets, provision of supper and the many who helped out behind the scenes ie drivers, servers, ticket sellers and cleaning crew. Keep tuned because more and varied events will occur soon.

OUR SCHOOLS BENDIGO & DIOCESAN MATTERS

Youth Corner Australian Catholic Youth Festival: This December the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference is hosting the third Australian Catholic Youth Festival. The festival will be held in Sydney from December 7-9 and is for year 9 students- 30 year olds. It will be three full days of spending time with 15,000 young Catholics from right around Australia to celebrate and learn more about the Catholic Faith. If you’re in secondary school speak to your RE teacher about attending with the school group, and if you’re over 18 and would like to attend email Danielle at [email protected]

ST LIBORIUS SCHOOL Dear Parents and Friends of St Liborius, What an extremely sad and trying times over the last couple of weeks. On Monday we supported Georgia Turville and her family as they said their final farewells to Georgia’s father, Paul. Thank you to our school community for your understanding as we had a large group of staff attend the funeral whilst maintaining the normal timetable at school. Terry Liverton sends his thanks and appreciation to our community your support and prayers as he attended his mother’s funeral in Qld last week. Please keep Stephanie and Jess Sefton in your prayers as Steph remains in hospital to help nurture and support their unborn baby. Prayers are with you Steph. A letter has gone out to our community regarding the chance of German Measles (Rubella) being present in the school. This is a mild condition for most people but can be very serious for pregnant women, especially in the first trimester. If in doubt, please see your doctor. We had 4 students attending the Division Athletics on Monday, and they all did a fantastic job in their particular events. Well done. The Year 3-6 students presented their Learning EXPO to the community on Tuesday. It is always amazing to listen the children articulating their learning journey when completing their Educational Research Projects. Our Footy Colours Day was a huge success. The children and staff came draped in their favourite footy colours and enjoyed a sausage sizzle for lunch. The day concluded with the Jacob Holden Memorial Cup football game between two Year 5/6 student teams. This was played in great spirit and was very entertaining. Tomorrow is the last day of term for the children and will incorporate our Multicultural Day. The students will engage in a number of activities around the Italian culture, linking with our Languages studies. Thank you to Sue Borserio for all of her organisation for this event. More information attached. Our Assembly will be held at 3pm this Thursday. Next term, Week 1 will be assembly on Friday and Week 2 will be newsletter as we transition to our revised processes of communication. We have an Australian Champion amongst our students!!! Harry Arnett is a rising star in the Go Karting world and on the weekend took out first place in the final meet for the Rotax Pro Tour which is fantastic. This win also projected Harry into top position on the championship ladder and he is now the Australian Champion for 10 Year olds. Harry has now become the youngest member on the Australian team who will travel to Portugal next term to compete in the world championships. Well done Harry, all of us at St Liborius are so proud of you. The Walker Learning Study Tour which was led by Travis Ledwidge, Vin Ryan and myself, was a huge success, It was fantastic to see the whole group embracing the diversity of the many communities we visited and engaged with. It is a very powerful form of Professional Development and will have significant positive effects on individuals and schools. Thank you to Travis and Vin for their insightful and natural leadership within the group, it provided another incredible dimension to the study tour. Thanks again to Alistair Stewart for his work as Acting Principal in my absence. Next term Travis Ledwidge will be on Long Service Leave for the first two weeks. On Friday the whole staff will work with Kylie Smith, Faith Formation and Spirituality Education Officer from the Catho-lic Education Office. Kylie continues to provide quality and timely professional development for our staff. I hope everyone enjoys the holidays, the weather is fine, the footy granny ends up being a Tigers v Cats hit out and everyone stays safe and healthy. Summer uniform needs to be worn by all students next term and our ‘No Hat, No Play’ policy will be enacted. Regards Frank Dullard

“So the last will be first and the first last” - MATTHEW 20:16 You’ve heard the saying “it’s not where you start, but how you finish.” This certainly applies to this Bible passage. We have a responsibility not only for our own lives, but for the lives of others as well. We are called to generously share our gifts with others, not hoard them for our own use. Our gratitude and generosity helps us live “God-centered” lives and not “self-centered” lives.

ROSTERS

What a Life! Brendan had serious hearing problems for a number of years. He went

to the doctor and the doctor was able to have him fitted for a set of hearing aids that allowed Brendan to hear 100%.

Brendan went back in a month to the doctor and the doctor said,

"Your hearing is perfect. Your family must be really pleased that you can hear again."

Brendan replied, "Oh, I haven't told my family yet. I just sit around

and listen to the conversations. I've changed my will three times!"
