PASTOR’S REFLECTION

Dear Friends,

Happy Catholic Schools Week! Saint Louis Parish is EXTREMELY proud of Saint Louis School! Our principal, Kathleen McNutt, and our 61 staff and teachers are passionately forming the next generation of the Church!

This year’s national theme for Catholic Schools Week is “Learn - Serve - Lead - Succeed.” Through their formation in faith, virtue, spirituality, and academics the 521 students of St. Louis School (preschool through 8th grade) are living that theme everyday. This week we pray in a special way for our faculty, staff, and students and we renew our commitment as a parish to continue to support them in every way!

* * * * *

You’ll notice that today’s bulletin features a new format subdivided into the five areas of parish life: Spirituality, Learning, Service, Fellowship, and Stewardship. As you read the bulletin each week be attentive to the ways that you are called to be a full member of the Body of Christ by living these five areas of Christian life here at St. Louis Parish. This Parish is YOUR parish and YOU are its living stones!

Your Pastor, Father O'Hare

Lord, Teach Me To Pray

Would you like to develop a deeper relationship with God by learning how to pray in the spirit of St. Ignatius? Come be part of a 12-week series for women entitled “Lord, Teach Me to Pray”, a three-part prayer series based on Ignatian Spirituality. Part 1, “Praying Christian Virtues,” will introduce you to the meditative and contemplative way of prayer devised by St. Ignatius of Loyola. We will meet as a group two hours each week for 12 weeks. Each participant will be

asked to spend 15 minutes in daily prayer on the assigned Scripture passages. The series will begin on Thursday, January 17 at 3:00pm in the St. Clare room at the rectory. Please contact Maryann Fay at [email protected]

LEARNING

SERVICE

Interested in Catholicism?

All those adults interested in becoming Catholic or those who need one or more sacraments are invited to join us for RCIA classes, beginning Sunday, February 3 after the 10:30 Mass in the St. Francis Room . Please contact Carmen Lane at 703-765-4421 Extension 6, or by email at [email protected]

Why are Catholic and Protestant Bibles different?

Catholic Bibles contain—and have always contained—all of the books of the Bible that have been tradit ionally accepted by Christians dating back to the time of Jesus. These accepted books total 46 in the Old Testament and 27 in the New Testament. Protestant Bibles, however, have seven fewer books in their Old Testament. These seven books excluded in the Protestant Bible are Baruch, Sirach, 1 and 2 Maccabees, Tobit, Judith and the Wisdom of Solomon, plus portions of Esther and Daniel. These books were rejected by Protestant Reformers in the 1500s because elements in these books did not support certain Protestant theology and doctrines. Prior to the sixteenth century, however, all Christians used Bibles containing all 46 books of the Old Testament.

How is Christ calling you to serve the poor in our community? Please consider becoming a member of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul at St. Louis, which provides direct assistance to local families who are struggling to afford food, rent or utilities. For more information, contact Keith Snider, [email protected] or 703-980-0726.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul provides direct financial assistance to families in our parish and needs your support to do your work.

In 2018, thanks to the generosity of our parishioners we provided $39,136 in assistance to 101 families for rent, utility, medical bills and other needs. Please support our work through your parish envelope offering, Faith Direct, or by placing donations in the Poor Box, located in the church vestibule during Mass. Any amount is appreciated.
