1. Geo-Structures Confluence 2016

a. Discussed splitting the revenue amounts between the various committees.

2. March 2017 Luncheon:

a. Confirmed that Joel Cumby from IDOT will discuss the use of large diameter pipe piles at the

Martin Luther King Connector.

3. Case Histories:

a. Ideas for speakers were discussed. One speaker has agreed to present so far (Jeff Hill). Two of

Xiong Zhang, Pravin Jha, and Greg Hempen will provide second and third presentations.

b. Shari sent out save the date flyers.

c. Request for sponsors and student speakers will be in the February newsletter. Limiting student

posters to between 6 to 8 students.

4. Funding Requests/Transfers:

a. Committee agreed to request an unbudgeted amount of $1,000 donation to Engineer’s Club

capital campaign (pending board approval).

b. Jake will request transfer of $3,000 to Edward Jones account.

c. Draft policy for funding/donation/scholarship requests will be reviewed and possibly approved

at next meeting.

a. Discussed the anticipated amounts to be split between the various committees.

2. March 14, 2017 Luncheon at Engineers Club:

a. Jake will follow up with Joel Cumby to discuss details for luncheon.

3. April 25, 2017 Case Histories at Engineers Club:

a. Xiong Zhang (H2Ri wicking fabric) was selected as second speaker. Greg Hempen (TVA

blasting) was selected as the third speaker.

b. Jared Holland sent out email outlining deadline for student abstracts (3-31-17).

c. Shari will work on the flyer and Jake will open online registration.


a. Committee approved to provide $500 to University of Missouri student section for their

upcoming geotechnical conference in Orlando this spring.

b. Jake will look into amounts in Edward Jones account and coordinate with ASCE treasurer on

possible reinvesting.

c. Draft policy for funding/donation/sponsorship requests will be finalized at next meeting.

d. Jake will submit the Cross Country Lecture application.

e. Date for November 3, 2017 has been reserved at the St. Charles Convention Center.

2. March 14, 2017 Luncheon at Engineers Club:

a. 21 people signed up as of 3-8-17, deadline is 3-9-17.


a. Shari confirmed with Engineer’s Club that parking would not be an issue with the ongoing

construction.

b. Online registration is open with 7 people signed up as of 3-6-17.

c. Dennis will ask Jared Holland about progress on poster presentations.

d. Shari has 3 easels and the Engineer’s Club has at least 1 to use for student presentations.

Additional easels may be needed along with foam board.

e. We will need someone to coordinate printing name badges for the event.


a. Edward Jones account excess cash amounts were reinvested.

5. GeoConfluence Scholarship:

a. Pravin is preparing the application paperwork.

1. Geo-Institute Committee Budget/Treasurer Report

a. Expecting large income amounts for Geo-Structures Confluence before fiscal year ends. b. 2017/18 proposed budget was forwarded to ASCE. c. ASCE board will review committee budgets as well as the possibility of setting a limit on the

amount from GI’s annual surplus that goes to the section’s general fund. 2. Geo-Structures Confluence 2017

a. 8 to 9 exhibitors and 2 break sponsors (Burns & McDonnell, Humboldt) have been confirmed thus far.

b. All speakers have been booked, with the exception of the graduate students. c. Members are asked to forward the registration flyer to colleagues and other professional

organizations. 3. GeoConfluence Scholarship:

a. Pravin is waiting to hear back from scholarship applicants from Universities.

4. Funding Requests: a. SIUE is requesting money to sponsor the fees for 9 students to attend the Geo-Structures

Confluence. The committee agreed to an amount of $400.

5. Miscellaneous a. Cross USA Lecture winner will be selected at the end of September. b. Jake will review list of available webinars for upcoming year for committee to select. c. Geophysical conference to be hosted by Terracon will be held on Friday, November 3, 2017 at

a. End of previous fiscal year yielded approximately $6,000 in surplus.

b. ASCE board approved setting a limit on the amount from GI’s annual surplus that goes to the

section’s general fund at $1,000.


a. 19 exhibitors and 2 meal sponsors (Burns & McDonnell, Geotechnology) have been confirmed

thus far.

b. So far, 150 people have registered.

c. Jeff Fouse will investigate the possibility of adding ribbons to the name tags to distinguish

exhibitors, speakers, and committee members.


a. 7 applicants for the scholarship (6 MS&T, 1 SIUC).

b. Applications to be reviewed soon.

c. Previous winner has submitted software completed thus far.

4. Funding Requests:

a. SIUC is requesting money to sponsor the fees for 2 students to attend the Geo-Structures

Confluence. The committee agreed to an amount of $120.

a. The committee voted previously to approve the funding request amount of $180 to SIUC for

student registration at the Geo-Structures Confluence. Previous funding request amounts of

$120 and $400 were approved for SIUC and SIUE, respectively.


a. Name and address of payee needs to be confirmed and communicated with John Weiland for

release of checks.

b. Certificate letters for scholarship will be enclosed with the checks.

c. Pravin to take lead on this.

3. Cross USA Lecture:

a. Jake to check if funding/time allows it to push for November Geo-Structures Confluence.

4. Geo-Structures Confluence 2018:

a. Some of the possible dates for 2018 conference was discussed. Nov 1 (Thursday) being the next

day of Halloween and Nov 8 being KU Geotech Conference, Nov 2 (Friday) was proposed a

possible date without conflict.

5. Webinars:

a. Jake to send list.

b. Need to decide one or two event.

c. Dec 14 decided for “Slab on Grade for Expansive soil” 10:30 am at Geotechnology.

6. March Luncheon:

a. Set for 2nd Tuesday, March 13, 2018. Suggestions needed for the luncheon speakers.

7. Case Histories:

a. Look for the possible dates at Engineer’s Club.

1. Geo-Institute Committee Budget/Treasurer Report:

a. General discussion on budget item

b. Suggestion to add a budget line item in Treasurer’s report.

c. Additional funding pending from ASCE’s Paypal account. Final conference accounting is

expected soon from Greg Hempen.

2. Webinar – December 14, 2017:

a. General discussion on the preparation of the webinar was held.

b. Generous volunteer services offered by Xiaomin for Pizza, Ken for drinks and Pravin for room

set up.

3. Next Webinar:

a. Discussion was held on selection of a webinar from the list of topics provided.

b. Webinar on “Underpinning of foundations” selected for February 2, 2018.

c. Registration process to follow soon.

4. March Luncheon:

a. Discussion on possible topics and speakers. A possible topic on St. Louis arch was suggested.

Jeff Fouse suggested through email to invite Corps of Engineers to discuss new wetland

mitigation procedures.

b. Attendees to reach out for persons interested in speaking. David Rogers from Missouri S&T

was suggested as a possible person to reach out to.

c. Lyle to look for possible speaker on Poplar Street Bridge Project.

d. Final decision to be made in January meeting.

5. Case Histories/Cross USA Lecture:

a. Discussion was held regarding merging Case Histories event with Cross USA lecture this year.

If Dr. Whittle can speak on 2 of his topics, it can be possible to fill the time. Jake to check with

Dr. Whittle on that.

b. Still waiting to hear from Dr. Whittle on date confirmation.

c. Jake to check available dates at Engineering Council. It was discussed to avoid possible date

conflict with Kansas City geotechnical conference which is probably on April 24th. Lyle to

check on this date. Similarly, if possible, avoid date conflict with Mid-Continent Student

Conference at SIUC which is from April 19-21, 2018.

d. Pravin to contact school’s student chapter for poster presentation. Limit would be two posters

per school and due date sometime in March (TBD).

6. Mid-Continent Student Conference, April 19-21, 2018:

a. Discussion held on SUIC student chapter’s request for judges for Geo- Wall Competition.

b. Lyle and Fernando volunteered to be the judges.

c. Geo – Wall competition is on Friday 20th April at 8:00 am.
