The Apostles did the right thing this time. They had been traveling with Jesus for more than a year: living with him, hearing him preach, watching him perform miracles and change people's lives. They ask Him to increase their faith. Jesus' answer is mysterious. He looks at them and He must have been glad that they had asked for help instead of abandoning His mission. Jesus explains that a tiny little bit of faith, the size of a mustard seed - which is about as small as something can be without getting microscopic - is enough to do marvelous things. We are all like the Apostles. We know in our hearts that we are capable of doing much more, that we were made for greater things, but we don't realize that God has already given us every-

thing we need to achieve them. He has already planted in our souls the seed of faith, of divine life - He did so at baptism. Now it's up to us to exercise it. If we do, it will grow, and the more it grows, the more room God will have to do truly wonderful things in us and through us.

The prophet Habakkuk, whom we listened to in the First Reading, stresses the power of faith too - but he also gives us a clearer idea of what exactly faith is. Habakkuk lived in the 6th century BC, when Israel had been conquered by the Babylonians and the majority of Jews had been deported. Habakkuk is in the middle of it all, he sees the devastated city and countryside, strewn with corpses, burned and barren. He feels the pinch of poverty and destruction, and he does the most natural thing in the world: he complains to God about it: "How long, O Lord? I cry for help, but you do not listen!" This teaches us an important lesson: a strong faith doesn't mean we won't suffer and be confused in life. A strong faith doesn't take away our crosses, but a strong faith does show us where to turn when the crosses come: to God, our all-wise, all-powerful, all-loving Father. God answers Habakkuk's prayer. He promises that he will act, that he will restore Israel's fortunes. He doesn't give all the details. In fact, he even seems to imply that it may take longer than Habakkuk would like: "If it delays," God says, "wait for it." God shows that He is not aloof from our sufferings. He is watching over us, no matter what. He promises that if we continue to have faith in Him, in spite of suffering and hardship, we "shall live". Faith isn't a problem-free philosophy - that's superficial and naïve. Faith is strength with length - it's the power to persevere through difficulties - the power that comes from knowing that our Father's in charge. How do we increase our faith? Pray the rosary!

Today, in addition to being the 27th Sunday of Ordinary Time, also happens to be the memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary. The origin of this liturgical celebration provides a powerful example of how we can exercise our faith. In 1571 Christian Europe was divided - the Protestant Reformation had just blasted the unity of Christendom, and even the remaining Catholic kings were fighting among each other with an eye to political advancement. At the same time, the great Turkish Empire was growing and spreading west over the Mediterranean lands. He managed to unite the three European leaders with the biggest navies, and convince them to organize a defense of Europe. The sea battle took place on October 7, 1571, at the Gulf of Lepanto, near Greece. On that day, the pope had instructed all the Catholics throughout Europe to pray the rosary for victory. Processions and vigils were held everywhere, and church bells echoed across the continent, as entire countries seemed to hold their breath. The Christian forces had never before defeated the Turkish navies in a sea battle, but that day they did. Pope Pius V attributed the victory to the prayers of Christians, and estab-lished the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary in gratitude to God.

The month of October is dedicated to Mary, the Mother of God, as a month to pray the rosary each day. I encourage all of you to kindly return to our long standing and beautiful tradition of praying the rosary everyday during all thirty-one days of this month. If you have never done so, now is the time to spend time with our Mother. If you cannot pray the entire rosary due to time, at least pray a decade of the rosary each day. Please make sure the entire family prays, along with the children, your grown-up children, and grandchildren. After all, if God and Mary is so good to us by helping us so much on earth, should they not receive the same time as we show our mothers here on this earth? Let this month be a spiritual game changer for us all with God and Mary! St. Louis de Montfort and Saint John Paul II the Great prayed the rosary everyday! Why should we not do the same? Is some-thing more important than the rosary?

I continue to thank all of you for your continued hospitality and warmth you are showing me and each other. Please spread the good word of our wonderful parish and it is very nice to see more and more people coming back to worship God. Many of us are still saying how great it is to see our parishioner families return-ing back.

St Louis de Montfort, pray for us! Our Lady, Undoer of Knots, pray for us!

Have a great week and enjoy life with a great smile! Pray always!

    FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK!

Hats off to two of our 2nd grade students, AVA & IZABEL ONTIVEROS These 2 young ladies had several inches of hair cut and donated their hair to Children with Hair Loss. This organization provides wigs to children suffering from hair loss at no cost to them. We’re proud of you both! Miss Lynch and her 3rd grade class are using a Teaching Trunk from the Illinois Holocaust Museum. During Reading and Social Studies classes, the 3rd grade will be studying how to be a responsible citizen, what it takes to care for themselves and others, and how to understand core values of respect, justice and compassion.

Good lessons to practice at any age!

In the weeks following the devastating flooding in southern Louisiana, recovery and rebuilding efforts have moved to the forefront. Thanks to the generosity of people like you, the Knights of Columbus has collected more than half a million dollars to support those affected by the flooding. These funds have been used to provide for immediate needs such as food and cleanup supplies, as well as rebuilding materials and other items. Although the media no longer prominently features the devastation, the people of Louisiana have a long road ahead. Much needs to be done to rebuild homes and lives. Please do not let these victims be forgotten and consider donating what you can to help. You can go to the Knights of Columbus website, www.kofc.org, to support the relief efforts. Thank you for your continued financial and prayerful support.

Beginning the weekend of October 8-9th, as in years past, St. Louis de Montfort will be participating in The Baby Bottle Project benefiting The Women’s Centers of Greater Chicagoland. This non-profit organization directly assists mothers and families experiencing crisis pregnancies by offering emo-tional, financial, material, and spiritual support through counseling, clothing & monetary provisions,

prayer, and other aid. Each year the three locations together have over 5,000 appointments with expecting mothers. By God’s Grace, The Women’s Centers have saved over 40,000 babies—and their mothers—from abortion since opening in 1984. Please take a Baby Bottle home with you from church on October 8-9th, fill it with your spare change, and return it the weekend of November 5-6th. This is a simple, but crucial fundraising effort for The Women’s Centers. Please note the Baby Bottles cost almost $1.00 per bottle and are recycled afterwards so please return upon completion of the project. Thank you for helping defend life, and we ask the you always remember to keep all pro-life undertakings in your prayers.
