What about Thee?

Greetings, kindly friend. I am wondering, perchance dost thou parley in such manner as this? Art thou familiar in this manner of speech with thy fellow laborers or kindred? I think not. For that matter, I bet it took a few moments to decipher and translate those three sentences. Why? They are in English, aren’t they? So what is the problem? The problem is that those sentences are in archaic language, which has not been in common usage for more than 400 years. People just don’t speak that way anymore, except maybe at a medieval renaissance or a Shakespearean festival. It can sound very poetic, and often very charming, however, though understandable, it is cumbersome for us, and full of opportunities for confusion and error. So, what is my point? Since we do not speak or think this way, why do we so often use this archaic form when we communicate with God?

Think about it. How many times have you said “thee”, “thou”, “thy”, “thine” when praying? Many people, who are not fluent in old-English, insist on studying the Bible using a King James Bible. We sing songs in archaic English. In all of these circumstances, we stumble over unfamiliar words and syntax, and we do it because we somehow think of it as “the right way”. What makes it “the right way”? Because we have always done it that way. But, does that make it “right”?

Before I go further and cause someone conster-nation or emotional distress, let me say this: there is nothing wrong with praying with “thee” and “thou”, reading the King James Bible, or singing old hymns. If these things bless you, please keep doing them. I, too, appreciate the beauty in this poetic format, but I just don’t speak fluently in old-English.

Anyway, back to my point. What is the right language for you to use when you communicate with God? Whatever is the most meaningful for you. If that is common, modern English, great. If it is Spanish, Ole’! If it is German, wunderbar! God even reads sign and interprets artistic expression. The point is, God is fluent in the language that you are most comfortable using. He wants to hear from you in the manner that you can sincerely express yourself. This may be a song, a dialog, a letter, a sculpture, quiet meditation, a scream, a murmur, a whisper, a sob-- whatever is the real you. That is where He will meet you; how He will best hear you.

What is your language? Not to worry. God speaks it.

In Christian Love--

--Mike McCay

School Supplies Donations

This year we are collecting school supplies for Vanessa Hemmen's school. They can use any school supplies, but are especially in need of:

backpacks, composition notebooks, pencils, crayons, Elmer’s liquid glue, loose leaf paper, and scissors. Gently

used clothes (red, black or blue collared polo shirts and khaki or black pants are also appreciated).

There is a box in the Narthex to place donations.
