Sr Grace Mary Croft, SDS, and Sr. Yasinta Godfrey, SDS will speak on behalf of the Sisters of the Divine Savior, also known as Salvatorians, the weekend of June 30/July1. We will have a special collection to benefit the congregation, who minister on five continents to improve the quality of life among people of every faith and culture.

Sr. Yasinta Godfrey is a Sister of the Divine Savior, also known as Salvatorians, from Tanzania, East Africa. She is the first born of six children. Sister made her first vows in 2002, final vows 2010. She is a teacher in the secondary school. Sister has also completed her education as an Education Administrator.

Sister Grace Mary Croft, SDS taught high school social studies for nearly 18 years and also ministered as a formation directress. JOB OPPORTUNITY

We are looking for a qualified accountant willing to work with St. Luke's to take our parish family to the next level of growth. Primary responsibilities would include part-time bookkeeping (up to 25 hours a week). Full time employment is available, but would initially require diversity in job roles as St. Luke’s grows. Initial job responsibilities are listed in the Diocesan handbook for bookkeepers (available in the Parish office). Applicants must be willing to take on full time business manager responsibilities as the number of registered families grows, possibly as soon as February 2019. As we grow, in addition to bookkeeping responsibilities, the business manager will supervise general contractors for building maintenance and repair, attend to minor facility needs, attend Diocesan meetings as a representative of St. Luke's, and fulfill the duties as listed in the Diocesan description of Business Manager. A degree in accounting is required. Anyone interested should submit their resume to Fr. Larry and Fr. Adam

CATHOLIC WIDOWS AND WIDOWERS

Catholic Widows and Widowers (C.W.W.) is a group of adult Catholics that have lost a spouse who are joined in faith, hope and social togetherness. We meet the 4th Tuesday of each month at Sacred Heart Church, 1627 Grand Ave., West Des Moines, Iowa, North side, 2nd door at 2 pm. We have luncheons, potlucks and dinners out. We meet the first Friday of each month for mass at different churches in the surrounding area, with brunch following. We take trips to various places of interest. You are free to join in any or all of the events. We car pool for those who are unable to drive. If interested, please call Judy LaRonde at 515-988-7791.

SPONSORED BY ST. LUKE'S FAITH FORMATION COUNCIL: Join us for Monday night "Formed" sessions on "Who am I to Judge: Responding to Relativism with Logic and Love" on 6/25/18 @ 8:00pm and 7/9/18 @ 8:00PM

Program Description: What is “right” and “wrong”? Is what’s right for you right for me? Is there a right and wrong for everyone, all the time? These are difficult questions to discuss in our culture. We live in a society that supports the opinion that each person should make up his or her own morality—that there is no moral truth that applies to everyone. Many of us have been affected by the relativistic outlook that pervades the modern world. Maybe some of us wonder whether there really is an absolute right and wrong for everyone. Or maybe we accept that there is a moral standard for all, but we don’t know how to explain our moral convictions in a convincing way. Maybe some of us are afraid of saying something is immoral because we’re afraid of offending others or of being labeled intolerant. How do we talk about morality in a relativistic world? In this small group study program (featuring Edward Sri), we'll explore the classical view of morality and find that it’s not merely a set of guiding principles for theoretical situations—it is an entire way of life.

FATHER LARRY’S LETTERS

“Gratitude for the Memories, New and Old”

Dear St. Luke’s Parishioners, As I write this letter, the heat is on for the third in a row! It is way too soon to be approaching the 100 degree mark. We are all praying for more normal temperatures. This last week, the activity has been reduced. We all recovered from the rainy parish picnic. Congratulations to Paul and Eva Moritz, our champion bean bag tournament winners from the parish picnic. The Youth group seemed to enjoy the dunk tank even in the face of the rainy and cool weather. Great food and great fun! On Tuesday 6/12, I enjoyed lunch with Fr. Bob Kem, former pastor of St. Anne’s Episcopal church. We shared wonderful memories we had in times together at their church. On Wednesday 6/13, the AMOS Financial Board that I am part of, met in the afternoon here at St. Luke’s. Following the meeting, I enjoyed a nice dinner out. Thursday 6/14, the Parish Council met at 7:00 pm. Ryan Schon from the Finance Council explained the financial condition of the current and next year’s budgets. We discussed the up-coming process for new members and for filling in remaining terms. I realized that this was my last Parish Council meeting. I have been attending these meetings for 47 years! Friday evening, I prepared the Italian Dinner that was part of the Green Gala Auction last February. It was fun getting the cavatelli, Caesar salad, anti-pasta, Italian bread and gelato prepared. I think a good meal was enjoyed by all—even the young ones– especially the gelato! Saturday evening, I enjoyed celebrating the baptism of Quinn Harper Schmeel, daughter of Mark and Bethany, at the 4:30 pm mass. After mass, we celebrated the baptism of Evelyn Therese Knezevic, daughter of Sam and Breanne. Welcome Quinn and Evelyn! At the weekend masses, we invited couples to renew their wedding vows as part of our Father’s Day celebration. Father’s were invited to receive a special blessing as well. After mass, the Stewardship Committee held its monthly meeting. This weekend, the Annual Peter’s Pence collection is being held. This collection is to help Pope Francis with his efforts to help the poor and marginalized. The following weekend, we will have visiting sisters from the Sisters of The Divine Savior Missionaries. They will tell of their missionary efforts and the work they do with the poor in Africa. Please do what you can to help them out. I am going to have to get serious about going through things that I need to do something with and so I will have a table of free items that you can take whatever you want from in the Narthex. I have received many gift items and religious things that I will not have room for in my retirement quarters at the Dowling Priests’ Residence. Feel free to take whatever you would like. These days have filled me with gratitude as I look around and see the many ways so many people have been part of my life and the life of St. Luke’s these last seven and one half years. You have been a true blessing to me in more ways than you can imagine. God has been at work in you and me for the greater good of St. Luke’s parish and our lives of faith. We praise and thank the Lord.

Peace, Fr. Larry Hoffmann

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL 2018

Thank you to everybody who made St. Luke’s inaugural Vacation Bible School a success, from our many volunteers and attendees to everyone who donated items to help us transform our gym and classrooms into the kingdom of Babylon! Our students had a great time exploring the kingdom in their tribes, learning about the story of Daniel through songs, skits, and many hands-on activities. We look forward to offering VBS again next summer!
