19th Sunday in Ordinary Time August 7, 2016 St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church

Dear Parishioners,

With the insanity in the world, and yes, the religiously-inspired vio-

lence in parts of the world, one of the older parishioners approached me

last week and asked if she could mention to the daily Mass crowd the posi-tive aspect of a daily novena of which she heard. That novena consists of a

day-long prayer, “Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, save our country.” It’s quite simple, direct, and helpful!

I said by all means she could share that with them, and so I share it with you. That’s a simple prayer we can do throughout the day, just a short prayerful phrase. Good things happen

when we stop to pray, so I know this is one prayer that we can all do to benefit our Church

and country. I highly recommend it!

The initial 6 p.m. Mass was a success this past Monday. Twenty-three people attended, and no doubt there will be more to come. As of this writing, we’ve not begun the 6 a.m.

Masses yet, and I would think the attendance might be smaller at first, but we shall see!

There were parishioners who normally don’t attend daily Mass at the Monday night Mass,

and I expect the same for the Wednesday and Thursday Masses, and the Friday lunchtime Mass. In addition, for one Monday only, on August 15, the solemnity of the Assumption, we

will have a Monday lunchtime Mass at 12:10, in addition to the 8:45 a.m. and 6 p.m. Masses.

That way those of you who worship the Lord and honor his Blessed Mother have the oppor-tunity to do so.

This weekend we have the annual diocesan missionary priest appeal. Our missionary

presenter this year is from the Missionaries of Faith in the Philippines. He will speak at all

the Masses, and your generosity to the mission work of the Church, particularly in an area of the world where Islam is trying to spread, is greatly appreciated!

God bless you all,

Father Pat

Join the Music Ministry!

Our Music Ministry is about to begin a new year – and we’re starting earlier this year! Choir registra-tion will be held next weekend, August 13th and 14th, after all Masses in the Community Room. Fill out a registration form at the table, or pick it up and bring the filled-out form to the first rehearsal! Rehearsal schedules and other information about our choirs will also be available at the Music Ministry table. Music Director Mrs. Jodi Connor, as well as Adult Choir members, will be on hand to answer questions. Mrs. Connor can also be contacted at the church office at 641-6429.

All choirs will begin working on Christmas music immediately, so do not delay!!! The deadline to join a choir for the fall session is September 1st.

The Concert Choir (Adults 18 and up) will begin on Tuesday, Aug. 16th at 7:00 PM in the Church.

The Adult Choirs for the 4 PM, 9 AM and 11 AM weekend Masses also rehearse on Tuesday nights, at 7 PM, in conjunction with the Concert Choir. Details will be provided with the rehearsal schedule. This

choir will also begin on Aug. 16th.

The Higher Choir, for teens in grades 6 through 12, rehearses on Wednesdays from 6-7 PM in the Church beginning Aug. 17th.

The Joyful Sounds Children’s Choir, for children in grades 1 through 5, rehearses on Thursdays from

6:30-7:30 PM in Church beginning Aug. 18th.

Woodwind, String, and Brass instruments are needed to accompany Masses as well as Taizé Prayer. If you play an instrument and are high school age or older, please join in the music! Instru-

mentalists also play a significant role in our Christ-mas Midnight Mass and Easter Masses. Please register so that you can be contacted by our music director! Participation in Music Ministry is a form of steward-ship. Music Ministry members are, in fact, liturgical ministers! Please share your musical gifts, given to you by God, with our St. Luke faith community!

Father Michael J. McGivney died on this day, August 14, 1890. Father Michael Joseph McGivney was an American Catholic priest based in New Haven, Connecticut. He founded the Knights of Columbus primar-ily to help the immigrants who in those days had no protection after the loss of a father. The widow and children had a very difficult time, since women did not have the skills necessary to hold a job and raise the children also. They had to rely on friends and family for subsistence. The K of C brought men to-gether to help each other when tragedy struck. The Knights of Columbus formed an insurance program and it became one of the 20th largest insurance Companies in America. The KC’s developed through the 20th century as the world’s largest Catholic fraternal organization. St. Luke Council of the Knights of Columbus is one of the most active Councils in Louisiana. Catholic men over the age of 18 should be a Knight. The organi-zation promotes Catholicity, Life, Family, and Brother-hood. Grow in your faith through the Knights of Colum-bus. Join us. Call Warren at 985-377-2333.

Religious Ed News…. As previously announced, CCD registra-tion is now open for the 2016-17 school year for both new and returning students. You may mail your completed forms or bring them to the Reli-gious Ed office during the week. CCD classes will begin Sunday, August 21, Monday, August 22 and Tuesday, August 23, 2016. We do offer a class for special needs students on Monday evenings. For more information on this class or any aspect of our program please call the Reli-gious ED office at 641-2570. We do need a few more catechists for the upcoming year. Catechists are needed for 1st and 2nd grades on Sunday mornings, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th grades on Tues-day, and 5th & 10th grade on Monday. Is Christ calling you to spread the good news?
