!

Remember in your prayers those who have died, especially Mary (Babe) Grant and Linda Sawdey.!

Today is the Feast of the Archangels and they are worth cele-brating! Though sacred scripture and sacred tradition teach that there are seven archangels, only three are specifically named in our bible: Gabriel, Raphael, and Michael.!!

When we hear the name Gabriel, most of us will recall him as the angel who appeared to Zechariah to tell him he and Elizabeth would have a son, John the Baptist. It is Gabriel who makes the announcement to the Virgin Mary that will be the mother of our Lord. But Gabriel’s first appearance is ac-tually in the Old Testament book of Daniel when he explains a vision from God that the prophet has received. Gabriel’s name has many meanings: “Strength of God” and “God has shown Himself”. Gabriel is God’s holy messenger and tradi-tionally has been revered as the Archangel of wisdom, reve-lation, prophecy and visions.!!

Raphael’s name appears only in the Old Testament Book of Tobit where the travelling companion of Tobit’s son reveals himself as, “the angel Raphael, one of the seven, who enter and serve before the Glory of the Lord.” (Tobit 12:15). Be-cause of the meaning of his name: “Healing Power of God” or “God has healed”, Raphael is revered as the Archangel of healing but as a result of his actions throughout the Book of Tobit, he is also considered the angel of happy meetings and wise choice along with being the patron of those who travel. Raphael may not be as wellknown as the other archangels as the Book of Tobit is not found in Protestant bibles and that is their loss; it is a beautiful depiction of family love and loyal-ty in which sadness gives way to peace and joy.!!

Michael’s name appears in both the Old and New Testaments and he is the only one to whom the title “archangel” is actu-ally given in scripture. The name Michael means, “Who is like God?” and the Church gives Michael the highest place among all angels when she refers to him as Prince of the heavenly hosts. Michael is the angel who led the forces of Heaven in casting out Satan when he rebelled against God. And though he has been given many other responsibilities: rescuing souls from the power of the enemy and escorting souls to particular judgement, patron of firefighters and po-lice officers, his preeminent role is “Champion of the Church” and “Defender of Christians.” That may be why when Pope Leo XIII, who reigned during the later half of the 19th century, had a terrifying vision actually heard a con-versation between Satan and God, he composed the Prayer to St. Michael which was recited after all low Masses around the world. Though this practice was discontinued after about 80 years, in 1984 Pope St. John Paul II asked that Catholics reembrace the recitation of the prayer as the “fate of human-ity is in grave danger” and it would help us to “overcome forces of darkness and evil in the world.”!!

On this feast day of the archangels, let us be reminded of their constant presence in our midst and to call on them for intercession and aid:!Lord, hear the prayers of those you renew with the Bread of Life. Make them strong by the courage it gives. Through the watchful care of the Archangels, Michael, Gabriel and Raph-ael, and all the angels, may we advance along the way of salvation. We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord. Amen!!!

Leslie Nieves!

Praying Together!

LIVE THE LITURGY ! !

People often think that if they witness something miracu-lous, it would bring them to a greater faith and motivate them for greater involvement. Such is not necessarily true, as coming to a real and authentic faith still requires that we struggle with ourselves a bit and change our approach to living. Authentic faith is acquired when we see wisdom and life in the words of the prophets and in the teachings of Je-sus Christ. All of these point us to a God who has a particu-lar set of priorities for how life is meant to be lived. We have to avoid the trap of complacency that is rooted in pre-serving our own selfinterests and living lives that pursue "righteousness, devotion, faith, love, patience, and gentle-ness." (1 TM 6: 11) Complacency keeps us stuck in the sta-tus quo and prevents us from working toward respect for life, equality, and justice, and from advocating on behalf of the needs of the poor, the homeless, and the alien. Are you complacent?!

!!!!Anointing Mass will be Friday, October 18, 10:00 AM, at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Leicester. We invite anyone who needs healing and whose life is seriously threatened or altered due to any physical, mental, emotional, or age chal-lenge. This includes serious physical infirmity, ongoing pain, upcoming surgery, accidents, addictions, depression, emotional problems, or diseases. Also invited are those whose lives are challenged because they are the caregivers or family to those in need of healing.!For the rest of the congregation, it is our privilege to pray with and for all being anointed, asking God’s healing for all of us and the whole world.!

St. Luke’s Wishing Trees!Just as the leaves on the trees outside turn to beautiful color, there will be colorful trees inside each of our churches this month. It is again the season of “Wishing Trees”. The wishing trees list items that are needed or desired for each church. Some of the items are consumables or necessities like candles and others are bigger, like altar cloths or candle stands. But everything listed is something used to make our churches comfortable, inviting, beautiful places of worship.!!

The way they work: there’s a label on each envelope which lists the item and the cost associated. Some items can be purchased at any store and returned to the church. Other items must be ordered through the parish office. For those items, you can put the dollar amount in the envelope and return it in the collection basket or to the office. There is a variety of items listed and the donation or purchase of any of them will be helpful to our parish.!!

Last year we were blessed in that our trees “lost” almost all of their leaves and we were gifted with almost every wish expressed!!
