elcome to our Open Gardens scheme 2011. This year, twenty- four wonderful gardens will open their gates to the public to help raise much needed funds for St Luke’s. We are sure that you will enjoy visiting these gardens as much as we did and we hope that you will be inspired to go along and see as many as possible. Each one is a delight to explore and your visit will be helping to keep the good work of St Luke’s going.

St Luke’s Hospice, Plymouth is a registered charity that relies heavily on charitable giving. St Luke’s provides specialist care for more than 2,800 patients every year. It costs more than £5.5 million each year to keep the Hospice open. Government funding is limited, so we must raise at least £4 million each year. Therefore, your support is invaluable.

Please take care when you visit any of the gardens. Safety in the garden is paramount. Wear sensible footwear. Please take care around any water features and steps. Some gardens may pose a problem of getting around for those who have difficulty with slopes and steps. Please always supervise children and dogs at all times. You do have a duty of care for your own safety and that of any child/children in your care and please ensure that they are in your sight at all times. Please note that some gardens may not be suitable for children. Car parking at all gardens is at your own risk. Please remember that most gardens are private property. They are open through the generosity and enthusiasm of their owners and have not been designed for the visiting public. Mount Edgcumbe House is the former home of the Earls of Mount Edgcumbe and is set in Grade I listed gardens within 865 acres on the Rame Peninsula. The gardens at Mount Edgcumbe are truly stunning. A wonderful way to spend the day, exploring at your leisure. Take a look at the new Relic garden or wander through the Italian garden on your way to the Orangery for a spot of lunch.

1 Pentillie Castle Pentillie Castle and Estate is a beautiful property with spectacular grounds, which have hardly changed since Sir Humphrey Repton drew the plans in 1809. Repton’s legacy is not only a range of beautiful gardens; he also incorporated wonderful walks through deciduous wooded valleys down to the river Tamar. Yealmpton, Devon, PL8 2HUFrom Yealmpton village, take the road to Newton Ferrers. Gnaton Hall will be signposted on this road and will direct you to take a left turn.

Over five acres of garden in a secluded position, including woodland, lawned terraces, water and bog garden, wild flower bank and walled garden. 4 Egloshayle

Fore Street, Kingsand, PL10 1NBKingsand is situated on the Rame peninsula, nr Torpoint. Via the Torpoint ferry from the city or the A38 & A374 from Cornwall. Kingsand is signposted & Egloshayle is on the right at the top of the village.

Dr Crook has owned Egloshayle for over 20 years and has some help with work on this beautiful garden. Some of the features include a lovely spring garden and some specialist trees including a Judas Tree and a Liquid Amber. 5 Fardel Manor

Fardell, Cornwood, Ivybridge, PL21 9HTAbout 2 miles north of Ivybridge on the road to Cornwood. Just before the railway bridge, turn left into Fardel Manor.

Five acres of gardens, waterfalls and a lake surround a 13th century manor and chapel. The formal gardens, where each terrace has its own ‘flavour’, combine with wilder areas nearer the lake to offer many surprises. 6 Mike & Anne’s Garden Front and rear suburban garden approx 1/4 acre. The beautiful front garden consists of a formal fish pond, rose beds and a scree area. The Rear garden has a cottage style, with a small fernery, vegetable plot, two greenhouses and a wildlife pond. An enchanting garden not to be missed! Port Eliot

9 Designed by Sir Humphrey Repton, this is a beautiful Grade I listed woodland garden. Take a walk along the riverside, enjoy the beautiful rhododendrons or picnic in the woodland areas, there is something here for everyone. Hazelwood House Come and enjoy this untamed garden and river valley in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Loddiswell, Kingsbridge, TQ7 4EBTake the B3196 south towards Loddiswell & Kingsbridge. After three quarters of a mile from California Cross take first left (signed Hazelwood). Continue for a mile.

Thorn Cottage Take a drive onto Dartmoor to discover this beautiful garden in the middle of the countryside. Taking in 360 degree views, this garden is a true delight to explore. Burn Lane, Brentor, PL19 0NDFrom Bedford Square in Tavistock, take hill between HSBC & Lloyds bank, signposted Lydford & Brentor. Thorn Cottage is a cream & green building on the right.

A community garden, growing and selling vegetables, fruit, herbs and flowers. On an unused allotment, land that has been made available by Plymouth City Council. Developed as an arboretum, this garden has matured exhibiting 14 fascinating trees, which the current owners will guide you through telling the unique story of how each tree came to Weir Cottage. Weir Cottage

After 0.5 miles, take the first left (signposted Weir Quay) follow the road into the village, the cottage is signed to the left. From Bere Ferrers, follow Station Road through the village towards Weir Quay, the cottage is signed.

Hotel Endsleigh Endsleigh was designed by Jeffrey Wyattville as a cottage orné and the gardens designed by Sir Humphrey Repton. The garden is a fantastic mix of formal gardens and picturesque landscapes. When faced with the reality of coping with a life-limiting illness, we believe that all patients should be entitled to the very best care available. St Luke’s has been providing specialist palliative medical and nursing care, free of charge, to patients from Plymouth, South West Devon and East Cornwall since 1982. A registered charity, we are passionate about offering our patients dignity and choice at a time in their lives when they may feel they have none. Our vision is to provide the best end of life care to all patients wherever their ‘preferred place of care’ might be - hospice, hospital or home. The St Luke’s network of care stretches far beyond the walls of the Hospice inpatient unit at Turnchapel, reaching out to more than 2,800 patients each year. Alongside the specialist medical and nursing care, patients are also offered practical, financial, emotional and spiritual support.Statistics show that the number of people living with life-limiting illnesses is increasing year on year. Alongside that, the need for high quality specialist palliative care increases also. When patients come to St Luke’s Hospice, they are often in great pain and their needs are critical. The challenge we constantly face is actuallypaying for that care.Government funding covers less than 30% of the cost of caring for patients. We therefore have to raise at least £4 million from the local community every year, so the fundraising never stops! That is why your support means so much.
