In the 2013-2014 year, we asked ourselves “What is possible?” Your answer as donors: “Anything.”

Thank you for donating nearly $5.7M in cash in 2013-2014 to bolster the educational experience of 526 SLS students. Equipped with knowledge, critical skills, a lifelong passion to learn, and a commitment to serve others, our students are being well prepared for college and beyond—thanks to you.

The new Science Wing, Black Box Theater, and Be Kind Plaza, the School’s most visible advancements of 2013-2014, opened in September 2014. A physical reminder of the School’s commitment to both Science and the Theatre Arts, the Science Wing boasts large classrooms designed for exploration, inquiry, and hands-on laboratory work. The Black Box Theater adds a new dimension to our theatre program, providing a more intimate space for dramatic productions, as well as multipurpose classroom,meeting, rehearsal, and student common space. Outside, the wide and welcoming expanse of the Be Kind Plaza announces St. Luke’s culture to all who visit the campusand enjoy the sun-filled plaza as a place to talk, study, or reflect.

Students participated in forward-thinking programs such as the Week of Code with our Math department and “Maker” activities in which students learned to create, innovate, and problem solve. Upper School students pursued academic specialties through the Global, Classical, and STEM Scholar programs, while the Center for Leadership’s year-long lineup of Lunch and Lead speakers engaged them through a variety of topics and thinking about what it means to be a leader. In the Middle School’s Discovering Voices program, students and teachers together explored a vast array of personal passions and means of creative expression.

The School also launched its first Social Justice Leadership Summit (SJLS) that deepened awareness, strengthened our capacity and commitment to oppose injustice, and fostered trusting relationships across the perceived barriers of race, ethnicity, religion, identity, gender, age and power. These are but a few examples of what students did in 2013-2014 as a result of your support.

You don’t have to look far to understand how St. Luke’s has become a place where people go Above and Beyond. Just take a look at the names in this Annual Report. Thank you for all you do for St. Luke’s School.

The Be Kind Plaza and Be Kind Award Last year, our community suffered a great loss whenBill Mahoney, a St. Luke’s parent, trustee, and friend toall, passed away. This year, we celebrate the wonderfullegacy he left behind: his enduring kindness. In tributeto Bill, his legendary philanthropy, his love of St. Luke’s, and thanks to a generous donor, a new “BeKind” plaza and award have been created. The plaza ismarked by a simple stone engraved with these words:“In loving memory of Bill Mahoney, 1957-2013, SLS Trustee, Parent, and Friend,” and this quote byHenry James: “Three things in human life are important: the first is to be kind; the second is to bekind; and the third is to be kind.” Gardner Tregellas ’14was the inaugural recipient of the Be Kind Award.

Senior Gift 2014 Parents of the Class of 2014 contributed an impressive $435,387 to St. Luke’s School this year. In recognition for their generosity and tohonor the innumerable and varied contributions of the Class of 2014, therenovated front entryway to the School has been named “The Class of2014 Front Portico”. The portico was completed in May in concert withthe completion of the new Science Wing. A plaque recognizing this legacygift hangs prominently near the entrance. The triangular portico is themost iconic physical representation of the School, appearing in every picture, along with the School’s motto “Enter to Learn, Go Forth to Serve.”

General Endowment Fund Established in 1980, the General Endowment Fund provides unrestrictedsupport for the School’s operating needs.

Richard J. Pedrick Endowed Memorial Fund Established in 1995 in memory of DickPedrick, parent of four SLS students anddedicated board chair from 1989 untilhis death in 1995, “to perpetuate, as aliving memory, all that Dick Pedrickstood for.” The Richard J. Pedrick awardis given annually to a graduating seniorwho exemplifies leadership, dedication,intelligence, athletic participation, goodsportsmanship, and love for his/her fellow human beings. 2013-2014 Awardee: Melanie Bow ’14

E.E. Ford Foundation Fund for Minority Scholarships Established in 1997, this fund providesneed-based scholarships for minoritystudents, grades 9-12.

Endowment for Faculty Established in 2002, this endowmentprovides support for faculty and faculty-related initiatives such as professional development.

Dr. Joseph R. Kidd Excellence in Teaching AwardThis award was established by the Classof 1961 as a celebration of their 50th reunion, and in memory of a belovedmember of the St. Luke’s community:Dr. Joseph Kidd. Each year, the St. Luke’s community nominates a member of the faculty for this prestigious honor. 2013-2014 Awardee:Alec LeBris ’95, Science Teacher

Richard M. Whitcomb EndowedScholarship Fund Established in 2003 by a dedicated alumnus, the Richard M. Whitcomb Endowed Scholarship Fund providesneed-based scholarships for studentswho embody the values of St. Luke’sSchool and who will thrive in a schoolsetting that prepares them for a “lifelongcommitment to learning and social responsibility.” Beloved HeadmasterEmeritus Dick Whitcomb retired in 2002.

Head of School Discretionary Endowment Fund Established in 2005, this fund supportsstrategic projects determined by theHead of School.

Karen E. Wiegman ’92 Award Endowed Fund Established in 2005, the Wiegman Award is presented annually to the senior who has shown the most growth over his or her years at St. Luke’s School. This growth is marked by social connections, academic discovery, and personal maturation. 2013-2014 Awardee: Peter Baritz ’14

China Care Endowed Chair forChinese Language Education The China Care Endowment was established in 2006 to fund a Chineselanguage instructor and coordinator of the St. Luke’s School China CareClub, a student organization that helps further the mission of the China Care Foundation.

Unrestricted Board Endowment FundCreated in 2007, the income from this quasi-endowment provides unrestricted support to the School’s operating budget.

George E. Stevens Horizons Prize Endowment Established in 2010, the Horizons Endowment provides full scholarship support for a Horizons student each year for up to four years of high school. The intent of the prize is to inspire Horizons students to aspire to excellence at St. Luke’s School. The Award recognizesstudents who love learning, demonstrategood character, pursue excellence, and embrace community.

Goldstone Faculty Enrichment Endowed Fund This unique award was established in 2011 to provide grants to teachers and administrators to pursue personally rewarding experiences, be it travel, summerstudy, or the opportunity to pursue a passion.The intent of the Fund is to recognize and reward faculty members and administratorsfor excellence in service to the School and its students, as well as to emphasize in a visible and enduring manner the importanceof the faculty to the health and vitality of the School. 2013-2014 Awardees: Elaine Greeneand Elizabeth Preston

Class of 2012 Center for LeadershipSpeaker Series Endowed FundEstablished in 2012 as a legacy gift from theClass of 2012, this fund helps to underwritethe Center for Leadership’s speaker seriesprogram and support the Center for Leadership’s mission to develop every SLSstudent’s unique ability to lead and make a difference.

McIntire Family College Opportunity FundEstablished in 2012 to provide funding forexpenses that face juniors and seniors on financial aid, as they navigate the collegesearch process. The McIntire Fund helps students to discover and improve theirchances of attending colleges that will provide rewarding individual experiences.Established in memory of Gavin McIntire ’08.

S. Philip Klein Emerging Leader Award Endowed FundEstablished in 2012 to recognize St. Luke’sstudents who are of good character and possess strong leadership potential. On anannual basis, an awardee is presented withthe opportunity to attend an Outward Boundprogram between the 9th and 10th grades.

The intent is that award recipients will challenge themselves, further personalgrowth and understanding, and learn leadership skills at an Outward Bound program that benefits themselves, the St. Luke’s School community, and ultimatelythe larger world. The award aligns with theCenter for Leadership’s mission to find one’s voice and make a difference. 2013-2014 Awardee: Kelly McKenna ’17

Class of 2013 Student Life Endowed Fund Established as a legacy gift from the Class of2013, this fund supports activities related tostudent life and the promotion of schoolcommunity and spirit.

Duncan Edwards Waterside School Scholarship Fund Established in 2013, this endowed scholarship provides awards to outstandingstudents coming to St. Luke’s School fromthe Waterside School in Stamford, CT.

Edward Scovner Excellence in Middle School Teaching Award FundEstablished in 2013 by the Royce Family,this endowed fund supports an award to amiddle school teacher who has most inspiredstudents to fulfill their individual potentialsthrough her/his commitment, deep affection, and most importantly, distinctivestyle and approach to teaching. 2013-2014 Awardee: Jim Carroll, English Teacher

Parsons Family Women & Leadership Endowment Fund Established in 2013, this endowment supports initiatives related to women andleadership, including but not limited to program/conference support, individualawards, and/or scholarships for female students with leadership potential.

Head of School Discretionary Fund Renovates Academic Technology at St. Luke’sEach year, the Head of School funds oneor more strategic projects with incomefrom this endowed fund. This summer,an underutilized room on the first floorwas transformed into an open and inviting space for academic technologyat St. Luke’s. Two offices and a glass-enclosed common space will serve ashome to iU, our in-house professionaldevelopment program for faculty thatconnects technology, pedagogy, andcommunity. Additionally, we have anewly constructed on-site SLS “geniusbar.” Students can gather in this space fortechnical support from one of our veryown “student geniuses. ” These newrooms supplement the exciting new 1+1 program. Students will use (1) anSLS-issued MacBook Air laptop plus (1)an SLS-issued iPad as foundational andcomplementary learning tools. By 2016-2017, all students in the Upper School will fully participate in the program.

Goldstone Faculty Enrichment Fund Supports Two “DreamGrants” in 2013-2014The Faculty Enrichment Fund supports annual awards to faculty that enable them to pursue personally rewarding experiences, such as travel, summer study,or the pursuit of a life-long passion. In2013-2014, two faculty members received“Dream Grants,” as the St. Luke’s facultymembers affectionately call them. ElaineGreene, Math teacher, achieved her dreamto take a vacation to Ireland with her hus-band, Bill. Elizabeth Preston, Director ofTechnology, was awarded a grant that willallow her and her horse, Encore, to trainwith a top trainer in the sport of dressage.These unique opportunities were madepossible through the generosity of Stevenand Elizabeth Goldstone, parents of Maggie, who graduated from St. Luke’s in2010, and Douglas, who attended St.Luke’s for middle school.

The St. Luke’s Parents’ Association consists of all parents and guardiansof students enrolled in St. Luke’sSchool. Its goal is to engage and involve the entire school communitythrough educational, informational,social and fundraising projects. In2013-2014 donations to the P.A. helped provide funding for professional development, non-tuition essentials for studentson financial aid, and investments in capital projects including arecord-breaking year for the science-themed Wishing Tree.
