Announcements

Msgr. Darcy will be on 24-hour emergency Catholic Chaplain duty at Memorial Hospital, Nov. 28, from 9 a.m. to 9 a.m.

On Tuesday, November 29, the floor in the front vestibule of the church will be cleaned and burnished. Projects

such as these are made possible by your generous support of the Annual Collection. Response to this year’s Annual

Collection appeal is off to a strong start, with nearly $21,000 in donations received. We’re grateful to all donors who

help to keep our parish vibrant. Thank you.

The annual tree lighting ceremony and blessing of the creche will take place on Saturday, December 3 immediately

following the 5:00 p.m. Mass. All are welcome!

The Hospitality and Greeters Committee will hold the next Coffee “n” on Sunday, December 4, in the community

room immediately following the 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. Masses. Come and greet your neighbors!

The Chorus of East Providence will present Home for the Holidays with special guest performer Bill Harley on

Saturday, December 3, at 7:30 p.m. and again on Sunday, December 4, at 3:00 p.m. The concert will take place at

East Providence High School; tickets are $15 ($12 for seniors; children under 12 attend for free) and are available at

brownpapertickets.com. For more information visit the website: chorusofep.org

St. Margaret's Annual Breakfast with St. Nicholas & Christmas Bazaar will be held on Saturday, December 10,

2016 in McCaffrey Hall at St. Margaret School. This is a wonderful community opportunity to meet and have photos

taken with Santa Claus while shopping for Christmas gifts from local vendors. Santa, shopping and crafts are free

for all to enjoy. To enjoy a hot, buffet breakfast, tickets must be purchased in advance. If you have questions, please

contact Kristen Schott at [email protected] or 401-529-8148.

Please remember in your prayers

William McGee, Sr., whose funeral

Mass was held recently.

First Sunday of Advent

On Monday, December 5, St. Margaret

Parish will hold an Advent Penance

Service beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the

church. Experiencing God’s forgiveness

is a wonderful Advent practice in

preparation for Christmas. Please join

us!

On Friday, December 2, from 4:00—7:00 p.m., members

of the Confirmation 1 class will travel to LaSalette for the

annual light display as they continue to prepare for the

celebration of Christmas. Students will meet in the St.

Margaret parking lot.

Homebound

During the holiday season, a list of homebound

parishioners will be available at entrances to the church.

We encourage you to send a card or greeting to our

fellow parishioners who are not well enough to attend

church regularly. The holidays can be a lonely time for

those who may feel isolated; a card or greeting will let

them know they are remembered in our thoughts and

prayers. Thank you!

Eucharistic Gifts

If you schedule a weekend Mass and would like to bring

the gifts up to the altar, please speak to the sacristan or

one of the ushers as you enter the church.

The Next Baptism Preparation Session will

be held on Mon., Dec. 5, at 7 p.m. in the

Community Room. Parents should be

registered parish members and committed to

sharing their Catholic faith and its practices

with their growing family.

Godparent or Confirmation Sponsor Form: Have you

been asked to be a godparent or confirmation sponsor? If

you have, please know that you will be required to be a

registered parishioner of Saint Margaret Church for six

months before we can issue a “letter in good standing” as

required for sponsors to indicate they are striving to

practice their faith by regular worship, as well as by being

in good canonical standing and living lives consistent

with Gospel values.

Parish Giving Tree

Beginning the first week of Advent

(November 26/27), gift tags will be

available on the Parish Giving Trees at

all church entrances. The gifts will be

given to children from area schools and

Children’s Friend & Service. All gifts

should be brought to church,

unwrapped, no later than the weekend

of Dec. 10/11. Thank you!

First Friday Mass will be celebrated on December 2 at

9:00 am with the children and faculty of St. Margaret

School. All parishioners are welcome!

financial support for St. Margaret Parish.

Automated Giving: Would you like to simplify your life?

Stop worrying about checks and join the many parishioners

who have automated their giving using Faith Direct! Enroll

online at www.faithdirect.net. Our church code is: RI118.

You may also pick up a paper enrollment form at the church

entrance or at the parish office during office hours.

SOUTHCOAST’S MESSIAH TRADITION RETURNS

On Sunday, November 27 at 4:00 p.m., the public is invited to

attend a Messiah Community Singalong at Christian Fellowship

Center (822 Church St., New Bedford, MA). Featuring the

Christmas portion of Handel’s Messiah, along with the

Hallelujah Chorus and Christmas carols, the chorus will be

directed by Dr. Paul Cienniwa.

Anyone wishing to sing the Messiah is encouraged to bring the

score and arrive by 3:30pm for a warmup. A $10 donation and at

least one canned good or food pantry item is asked of everyone.

(Children 18 and under are free.) Food and money will be

collected at the door to benefit New Bedford’s Salvation Army,

Mobile Ministries, and the United Way Food Pantry. Rental

scores will be available for $5. Interested singers should contact

Hilare Moniz: [email protected].

Dr. Cienniwa says, “This Messiah will be completely

unrehearsed and is fully intended to be a fun, no-stress way for

singers (and the audience) to enjoy this festive music at the end of

Thanksgiving weekend. What a great way to start the holiday

season!”

publication schedule, weekly collection

figures were not available at the time the

bulletin was published. We will resume

weekly reports with next week’s bulletin.

The Pastor’s Page

Waiting and watchful!

These two descriptions of the

Advent Season provide us the

opportunity not only to wait, but

also to be hope-filled for these four weeks of Advent. There

are two schools of praxis about this quiet season: the

liturgical purist waits until December 24th for even a hint of

Christmas. The other school prefers a gradual manifestation

of light as if to dispel slowly the encroaching darkness of

night. I prefer the latter, a gradual intensification of light at

Church, at home, in the public square, and in our hearts.

This shortest of liturgical seasons (especially this year)

has two foci: the first part of Advent reflects on the Second

Coming of the Lord at the unknown end of time; and,

during the last week of Advent, the immediate preparation

for the great Christ-event at Christmas. They serve as the

two hinges of this wonderful expectant season: future and

present glory in Christ.

The Advent Season presents us with wonderful

opportunities to reflect on Revelation, that is, God’s self-

disclosure in his Son. Handel’s Messiah is performed in

every major city to begin the season. This is an annual ritual

that I’ve celebrated the beginning of Advent with a dear

friend since 1986: ~ that’s thirty years this performance!

Our Church Advent Wreath will be lighted each week in

anticipation of the Lord’s arrival. The weeks will pass

quickly…so be prepared!

The gift of our ‘time, talent, and treasure’ is the hallmark

of this quiet season. Amid the bustle, quietly read the

beginning of St. Luke, mention a person or group in prayer

before meals, and come to the Parish Penance Service on

Monday, Dec. 5th at 7 PM. You are invited to once again

take a tag or two off the Giving Trees at the three entrances

of the Church. The gifts should be returned unwrapped

with the tag attached or in the bag on the 3rd Sunday of

Advent, Dec, 11th … again, Christmas, on a Sunday, is

coming fast!!

My hope and prayer is that all of us have an Advent of

genuine promise and hope. Be patient, be holy, and be

joyful, especially when annoyed in the weeks ahead.

All the joy of Advent be with you!

~Msgr. Darcy
