Our parish theme and calling in

God’s Word To Us

Reflection on Lectionary Readings Holy Trinity Sunday, June 16, 2019

Breaking Down the Walls that Divide Us.

With the celebration of the Feast of the Holy Trinity we complete several weeks of reflection on the intimate life that God shares with us by both the Incarnation of his only-begotten Son and the gift of the Holy Spirit. As the gospel says: “I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now.” The mystery of God that envelopes us is way more than our limited minds can fathom. However we are in it, in the mystery, which we cannot understand or control and that’s the point: faith requires the surrender of all control. Science gives us knowledge of the world and thereby control through the technology our knowledge allows. With God it is totally different. So one God subsists in three divine persons, but there is only one will. This unity of will is our goal as well. Therefore we need to surrender our self-wills to achieve this unity. That is the goal of our parish offering a climate where all belong together because we do not live for ourselves but for God and in God. This is what breaks down the walls that divide us and nothing else will.

- Fr. Paul Hottinger

Multiplying Our Loaves & Fishes Parish Social Mission Week, June 17-24

“St. Margaret Mary Parish strives to create a welcoming, loving, and merciful community that serves those in need.”

Working to end Child poverty in the U.S. Our next parish social mission weekend on June 22/23 will focus on urging Congress to reauthorize the Child Nutrition Act. During this Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ we are reminded of the words of St. Augustine, “We eat the Body of Christ to become the Body of Christ.” The Eucharist gives us the strength and grace to be bread for the world -- especially for those who do not have access to the things they need to live with human dignity. As Pope Francis reminds us, “The hungry remain, at the street corner, and ask to be recognized as citizens, to receive a healthy diet. We ask for dignity, not for charity.” When the Child Nutrition Reauthorization Act comes up in Congress the U.S. Catholic Conference of Bishops top priorities will include adequate funding and access to: The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) that provides nutritious food and nutrition education to low-income pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, new mothers, and infants and children up to age 5. The National School Lunch Program guarantees that millions of low-income children receive a healthy lunch during their school day. All children can participate in the program, but low-income children qualify for free or reduced-price meals. The School Breakfast Program ensures that children across the country can get a healthy breakfast at school. As with the case of school lunches, children are eligible for free, reduced-price or paid breakfasts based on their families’ incomes. The Summer Food Service Program ensures that children (18 and under) who depend on school lunch and breakfast during the school year, still have access to free, nutritious meals and snacks during the summer.

The Child and Adult Care Food Program reimburses child care centers, Head Start Programs, family child care homes, homeless shelters and afterschool programs for snacks and meals served to children. The Bishops’ Conference will be urging Congress to protect past gains that expand eligibility and access to hunger and nutrition programs and ensure adequate investment and resources to fund these programs. We will be following the lead of the U.S. bishops by signing postcards to our elected officials after all Masses on the weekend of June 22/23. We will also be taking up a collection of baby formula and cereal to donate to Loaves & Fishes.

Congress has an important opportunity in 2019 to improve the health of millions of our nation’s children by passing a strong reauthorization that protects and strengthens the child nutrition programs. These successful, cost-effective federal nutrition programs play a critical role in helping children in low-income families achieve access to child care, educational, and enrichment activities while improving overall nutrition, health, development, and academic achievement. Out-of-School Time Programs The afterschool and summer nutrition programs provide meals and snacks at schools, parks, recreation centers, nonprofit organizations, and other sites in low-income communities or that serve primarily low-income children, often combining meals with enrichment, recreational, and educational activities. Currently, only about 15 percent of children who rely on free or reduced-price school lunch have access a summer meal. Increasing access to summer nutrition when children are out of school should be a top priority in the reauthorization. Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) CACFP provides healthy meals and snacks, supporting good nutrition and high-quality, affordable child care. It helps children to develop fully and enter school ready to learn, and supports parents’ ability to work. Unfortunately, under the current system, CACFP meals and snacks are out of reach for millions of young children in child care. The reauthorization bill can expand access to CACFP by improving the area eligibility test, allowing the option of a third meal service (typically a snack or supper), allowing annual eligibility for proprietary centers, increasing CACFP reimbursements to support the new healthier standards, streamlining program operations and paperwork, creating CACFP direct certification and community eligibility options, enhancing program reimbursements for CACFP sponsors, and continuing funding for USDA’s CACFP nutrition and wellness education and program efforts. National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs The National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program provide nutritious meals to millions of children across the country and play an important role in reducing hunger, improving nutrition, and supporting learning. Still, many eligible children do not participate in the programs, especially school breakfast which serves just over half of the low-income children who participate in school lunch. The reauthorization should protect eligible children’s access to school meals by leveraging additional opportunities to directly certify low-income children for free school meals. The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) WIC provides low-income at-risk pregnant and postpartum mothers, infants, and young children nutritious foods and nutrition education. The bill could increase access to WIC by extending certification periods for infants and postpartum women to two years and enrollment for children until their sixth birthdays; supporting efforts to streamline and modernize WIC services through technology, including achieving the congressional mandate for all states to achieve WIC EBT by 2020.

What does the Child Nutrition Act include? Do I have to agree when bishops apply church teaching to political action? The answer is complex because it involves the church’s teachings at different levels. First, there are the universal moral teachings of the Church. One fundamental universal moral teaching is that every human being, made in the image of God, possesses dignity that must be protected. These teachings are firmly grounded in Scripture and appear prominently in Church teaching. But by themselves such principles are too general to provide much concrete guidance. At a second level, there are specific moral principles. These principles emerge out of the Church’s reflection on the specific implications of its universal moral teachings. This reflection has led the church to assert various political, cultural, religious and economic rights and responsibilities. The moral principle at stake here is that every person has the right to affordable and nutritional food for themselves and their families. Finally, there are prudential judgments about the concrete application of these moral principles. The exercise of prudence required that one have a solid knowledge of the pertinent moral principles, but it also required that one attend to the concrete particulars of each situation. And to the degree that concrete circumstances limit our certitude, there should be a greater willingness to tolerate disagreement. When the bishops apply these moral teachings and principles to specific legislation, policies or judicial rulings, Catholics should take their positions seriously, but they are not bound to agree if their dissent is grounded in Catholic moral principles.

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- No one should be afraid that God has allowed there to be different religions in the world, Pope Francis said. "But we should be frightened if we are not doing the work of fraternity, of walking together in life" as brothers and sisters of one human family, he said. " People might ask themselves, 'Why is it the pope visits Muslims and not just Catholics?'" the pope said. Catholics and Muslims are both "descendants of the same father, Abraham," he said, and the trip was another step on a journey of "dialogue and encounter with (our) Muslim brothers and sisters." The pope said he wanted to follow in the footsteps of two great saints: St. Francis of Assisi, who brought a "message of peace and fraternity" to Sultan al-Malik al-Kami 800 years ago, and St. John Paul II, who visited Morocco in 1985. … "What God wants is fraternity among us," he said, which is why "we must not be frightened by difference. God has allowed this." But it is right to be worried when people are not working toward a more fraternal world, he added.

We must not be frightened by difference.

We believe we are called to break down the walls that divide us—accepting, affirming, and accompanying each other, even those with whom we disagree. We seek unity, not uniformity.

SOMETHING NEW FROM OSOT

Operation Support Our Troops-America

OVER THE EDGE

On September 14th at the Hotel Arista in Naperville, OSOT will bring an exciting & innovative way to come together as a community & bring more awareness in supporting those who sacrifice so much for our freedom.

Partnering with Over the EDGE Global & OSOT-America, the participants in this event will be rappelling down the side of the hotel to raise funds & bring awareness to OSOT’s mission of continuing to serve veterans & military families through their active duty, veteran & family programs. Proceeds will go to OSOT-America to allow them to continue their programs.

Notes from the Memorial Day Program that took place in the Upper Room The primary speaker was Col. (Ret.) Ron Bacci of Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR). ESGR was established in 1972 to promote cooperation and understanding between Reserve Component Service members and their civilian employers, and to assist in the resolution of conflicts arising from an employee’s military commitment. In Illinois over 90 volunteers are involved in the ESGR mission. Across the United States 3,750 volunteers work.

Members of the National Guard and Reserve and their civilian employers form an alliance essential to the security of our Nation. These brave men and women perform critical roles in disaster relief efforts at home and abroad, and continue to serve around the world to ensure our freedom. ESGR works to ensure all employers support and value the employment of Reserve Component members.

Fr. Paul’s Homily

The Mansion Within Acts 1:1-11; 1 Cor 12:3b-7, 12-13; Jn 20:19-23

(We will only ask for the Holy Spirit when we have seen through, had enough of, or become tired of the same old offers of the world.)

9

St. Teresa of Avila says that the human soul is like a mansion with many rooms full of light and art and beauty and space, and yet most people live in the basement. Of course when she is referring to light, beauty, and art she means the work of the Holy Spirit elevating our awareness, illuminating our minds, lifting our feelings into freer, lighter, more wholesome emotions that are all rooted in divine love. The basement on the other hand is the base, where we start, the beginning of our awareness; and in the beginning we struggle all by ourselves to fit in, to succeed, to negotiate relationships, all without the light of the Holy Spirit. Some people, whether through talent or good fortune, may actually succeed for a while, but sooner or later a solo flight ends in disaster because we are not created for ourselves. We are not created to overcome others or attain mastery over the world or other people. The only true goal for our free will is self-mastery, and we cannot attain that without the help of the Holy Spirit. And that help we call grace. The Holy Spirit is the source of all grace, and through its companionship and friendship we can attain the lofty life we are created for, which St. Teresa called living in the mansions or sometimes called the interior castles.

It does not describe houses we build, but rather houses we are and abide within.

Some may wonder why the Spirit is not automatically released in their lives. But Jesus taught, and I quote from Luke’s Gospel: “If you with all your sins know how to give good things to your children, how much more will the Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?” So have we asked? As with all matters of the heart the issue is desire. We won’t ask for the Holy Spirit if we don’t desire the Holy Spirit. But desires can be easily subverted. This is part of our human weakness. Saul on the road to Damascus didn’t actually know what he wanted, but in an unaware way, in a wild and unknown way he was actually seeking Christ, whom he then found.

But we live in a culture that from early childhood finds ways of promising us happiness if only we buy this or that. Consumerism can derail our spiritual development by substituting things for the real thing that Saul was relentlessly pursuing unawares on the road to Damascus. It’s one thing to advertise a car because it’s sturdy or economical or of superior engineering, all of which could be true; but it’s quite another matter to pretend, as many commercials do, that some

particular car will actually bring happiness and fulfillment and even a greater enjoyment of nature in its wake. And this brings us to a very sober question: how much deception and falsehood is part and parcel of modern life?

If we want the best God has to offer, first we have to clear away all the counterfeit claims of our materialistic society. We have to see clearly how bogus is the claim that anything at all can or could make us happy. This means confronting what St. Thomas Aquinas calls the four false gods: money, power, fame, and pleasure. That is a pretty good summary of what the world offers. It’s a little surprising that the modern world, which is so creative, can’t find anything else to offer; it’s the same old four false gods. We will only ask for the Holy Spirit when we have seen through, had enough of, or become tired of the same old offers of the world. Teihard de Chardin said, “We are not human beings having a spiritual experience; we are spiritual beings having a human experience.” That’s putting things in right order. The Holy Spirit is our advocate and friend helping us find our true identity, which can only be found in God.

A FATHER’S PRAYER Kind Father in Heaven, You gave fathers along with their spouses the power to be co-creators ena-bling them to participate in the plan of creation, which shows the superabundance of Your love. You

did not need to create anyone for Your happiness, for You are perfectly hap-py in and of Yourself as You love the Son and the Holy Spirit. Help fathers to cooperate with Your will as they bring new life into the world in a responsible manner, always respecting the natural law, based on Your eternal wisdom. Give them the courage and strength to live according to the teaching of the Catholic Church as it defends human life, marriage, sexuality and the family. Give them the grace to resist temptations of the flesh and to live in accord with the laws of Your church and with the natural law. Father, You gave us St. Joseph as an example of fatherly love for Your son, Jesus. As a foster father, he helped raise Jesus in His earthly life in the town of Nazareth. Give all fathers the insight to raise their children according to Your ways, all the while having humility, a spirit of poverty, purity, and charity. May they teach their children to do Your will by performing their work out of love for You, after the model of St. Joseph, the Worker. Give all fathers generous hearts, so that they willingly and joyfully accept the sacrifices for the common good of the family. Help them to instill in their children a love for Your Son and His Church, and a love and respect for human life, so that they will be wit-nesses to the rest of the world. We pray this in Your Son’s name, Jesus, in unity with the holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen.

St. Joseph pray for all fathers and their families. Happy Father’s Day from the Pro-L.I.F.E. Committee
