A NOTE FROM FATHER KEVIN

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

+ Pax et Bonum!

Hello! And welcome to St. Maria Goretti Parish as we come together to celebrate the Transfiguration of the Lord. This special feast is celebrated every year on August 6, and since the 6th falls on Sunday this year, the feast day overrides the Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Today we remember the extraordinary vision that Peter, James, and John were granted on a “high mountain,” believed by the Church to be Mount Tabor. That vision of a changed and glorified Jesus would change the Apostles’ view of Jesus forever. As we come here today, we ask our Lord to transfigure each one of us after the likeness of our Savior! We are not the same as we encounter the Risen Jesus Christ in our lives today. May God continue to mold each and every one of us into what He created us to be!

This Thursday, St. Maria Goretti Catholic School opens its doors once again for another school year. We place this school year for all of our students, even those heading off to colleges and universities across the country this week, under the guidance and the protection of the Holy Spirit! Our School is one of the biggest ministries that our Parish Family undertakes each year. And whether you use the school or not, either now or in the past, it is most important that all of us keep this important ministry in our prayers. Catholic education, in all its varied forms, is extremely important to the future of our Church! Quality Catholic education, most especially in our schools, takes a lot of work and commitment, and is expensive. Passing on the Faith has never been easy or cheap. And yet as people of Faith, as the Church, we know that this is something that we must do! We need well-educated and articulate Catholic Christians now more than ever! Let’s keep this coming school year in our prayers this week—for ALL of our students!

I know I have written about this before, and I promise I will write about this again, but I want to thank and acknowledge this week our awesome maintenance crew here at St. Maria Goretti. Under the direction of our faith-filled leader, Eddie Eberhardt, and with an outstanding team of Ed Quinlan, Marcy Wardwell, Mike Duff, and helping us for this summer, Nicholas Downing, these amazing folks keep our campus and our facilities in great shape and always looking good! We are all most grateful to each of you for your service and hard work! It does not go by unnoticed! From our entire community, we thank you for the work you do every day! May God bless and reward each one of you!

We have a very large campus. You’d be amazed at how long it takes just to cut our grass! And our facilities and our grounds get a little older every year with more and more usage all the time. We have one of the very best maintenance teams around. But there is no way that they can, or should be expected to, do it all! This Parish, its grounds, buildings, parking lots, and campus, belong to all of us. We should take great pride that this is our church! This is where we come to meet God. It is God’s house! We all should want to take care of it and keep it as nice as possible, for God, for ourselves, and for our brothers and sisters, most especially those whose first impression of the Catholic Church is what they experience when they come onto our property. Let’s keep the entire campus clean and nice looking. If you see something on the ground, pick it up and put it into the trash. If you see something that needs to be returned to where it should be, then put it back! We should all always try to leave things and places here at church, at least as good as the way they were when we found them. And this also extends to our bathrooms! That’s called taking pride in the House that we built for God, and keeping the best we can for God and others! It is not just our maintenance team’s job to keep St. Maria Goretti Parish the best that it can be. That responsibility belongs to all of us! This year, let’s work together to make sure that this happens.

The new bell tower is being prepared for the huge, pre-cast brick panels that are coming and will be installed in the next few weeks. This is going to be a blast to watch! Please keep the entire project in your prayers, most especially for the safety of all the workers! Have a great week!

In Christ, Fr. Kevin Make God your first priority, not you last resort.

Welcome! For more than 21 years now, we have been building the Kingdom of God, not with a few people, but with everyone! Please accept my warmest welcome, and I pray you will come to know St. Maria Goretti as we all do—our Spiritual Home and Loving Community. We are glad you are here and look forward to meeting you! God Bless you. —Father Kevin Welcome: Wendy Maue, Robert & Emily Kidwell, Thomas & Leslie Miskowiec , Anthony & Christine Gioia, Gary & Susan Kaser, Scott Albertson & Amy Soder, Brian & Cara Hubers, Eric & Laura Mantel, Todd & Danielle Stockelman, Gitas & Alisa Jameikis, Andy & Jennifer Davies

dent. We are also seeking a Co-Chair to help with the Can-dlelight Dinner. Contact Fran

Pawlowski, [email protected], if you would like more in-formation on these two positions. And finally, mark your calendars for the Fall Flower Sale, September 16 and 17. Two different sizes of mums will be available.

ADORATION CRITICAL HOURS Eucharistic Adoration is being in the real presence of Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament. Currently, no one is scheduled to be with Jesus during the Tuesday, 10 am hour or Fri-day, 3 pm. Prayerfully consider making a personal com-mitment to spend time with Jesus. Even amidst your busy schedule, He will provide for your needs.

2017 CHRIST RENEWS HIS PARISH WEEKENDS

The Women and Men of Christ Renews His Parish teams 34 invite all parishioners aged 18 and older to prayerful-ly consider joining Team 35 for the upcoming Renewal Weekend. The Women’s Weekend is September 23-24, and the Men’s Weekend is September 30–October 1. For details, contact Karmen Mueller ([email protected], 317-727-6327) or Scott Harris (saharris.boilermaker@ gmail.com, 812-480-4035).

UPCOMING CURSILLO WEEKENDS Are you ready for a personal encounter with Christ? Now is the time to sign up for the Fall Men’s (October 5-8) and Women’s (October 19-22) weekends. The weekends will be held at the newly renovated St. Joseph’s Retreat Center in Tipton. Only 30 participants from Central Indi-ana can attend. So it is not too early to sign up. The ap-plications and information about the weekends can be found on the information table in the Church Narthex or on the SMG website. You may also call Tom and Joan Scimeca, 317-571-8510, for more information.

OREMUS: NOT JUST FOR MYSTICSCS

Do you find it easy to pray? Is prayer an integral part of your day? Do you hear God’s voice in your daily life, and know how to respond accordingly? For many of us, the answer to these questions is, “no.” We all desire an intimate relationship with God. But, since learning to “say our prayers” as chil-dren, we never moved beyond rote recitation to an authentic conversation with God. The Oremus: A Guide to Catholic Prayer study program teaches you the essentials of an effective and fruitful prayer life. You will discover how God speaks to you, even in the smallest encounters. Following the Tradi-tion of the Catholic Church and the wisdom of the saints, you will learn how to express yourself to God in prayer, and how to hear his voice. Join other adults for eight consecutive Thursday evenings, 7–8:30 pm in the Parish Narthex, beginning August 17. The $15 fee covers course materials. For details and to register, e-mail Connie Anderson, [email protected].

How did you hear about SMG? We have friends

who are members, who recommended that we give

SMG a try. The school staff and church members have

been very kind and welcoming. We feel blessed to

be here!

Hobbies: Our family is very involved in activities

that are focused around the family. When not helping

at church, we are involved in extracurricular activities

that surround our children’s interests—swimming,

football, and baseball. We enjoy spending quality

time together as a family watching movies and catch-

ing up on how college life is going for Larissa.

What’s the best thing about SMG? The best thing

about SMG is that we feel a true sense of Christian

community here. Parishioners have been nothing

short of outstanding. Praise God that so many people

are willing to get involved and make SMG a place of

peace, love, and joy.

Favorite Prayer: Prayer of St. Francis

Favorite Saint: St. Teresa of Calcutta

Prayer for the future: Father God, please hear the

prayers of our SMG Family. We ask that you would

always lead, guide, and direct us down a path that

draws us closer to you and away from what keeps us

from deepening our faith for you. Please protect our

families, friends, and everyone we know and love.

Please forgive our shortcomings and always give us

the strength to be a light in the world that radiates

faith, hope, and love. We thank you for the many

blessings we have received and for the peace that on-

ly you can give that makes us truly happy. We ask

this in the name of Jesus, and in the power of the

Holy Spirit. Amen.

We welcome the Nanna Family!lylyllyl !

MOBILE PANTRY NOTES

We are helping those in need with our mobile pantry

monthly now through October. We helped a record

number of 76 families in the May drive. Thanks to all

who have helped at any of our mobile pantries! A spe-

cial personal thanks to Yvonne Clark, Missy Hopp, and

Sarah Weddige, as well as their entire families who

are always willing to help at these important events!

We are looking for more families or groups interested

in helping out with any of the upcoming mobile pan-

tries, such as August 16. If you or a group (BCC, CCM,

or CRHP, for example) are interested in helping,

please send an e-mail to [email protected].

Here at SMG, our Sports Ministry seeks to serve the youth of our Parish Family. It is our hope that young athletes learn the fundamentals of their sports, as well

as how to be positive role models of doing the right thing and treating people right.

“Give thanks to God for

the gift of sport, in which the human person exercises his

body, intellect and will, recognizing these abilities as so many

gifts of his Creator.“

~St. John Paul II
