Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 16, 2018

I’ve used this story a few times in talks or homilies.

A Chicago bank executive considered a young Bostonian for employment and decided to check out his references, one of whom was an officer at a Boston investment house. The

investment executive who responded to the request for a reference wrote that the young man’s father was a Cabot, his mother was a happy blend of Saltonstalls, Peabodys, and other members of Boston’s finest and most elite families. The man gave his highest recommendation without hesitation.

A few days later, the personnel manager of the Chicago bank called the man who had sent the letter and said, “We’d like a work reference from you before we hire this young man.” The executive replied, “I told you all about him. Didn’t you receive my letter?”

The personnel manager replied, “Yes, but we are contemplating using this young man to work in banking, not for breeding purposes.”

Our Catholic Faith, shared with us by our parents, families, teachers and the wonderful saints of history, has provided for each of us a solid foundation. The roots of our faith run deep. We must remember, though, that it is our personal responsibility to make that faith grow, to allow those roots to blossom. Others have shown us how to do the work and live the faith but it is our task to do it. As the humorist Will Rogers said a century ago, “Even if you’re on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there.”

St. James in today’s Second Reading questions his readers, “What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone says he has faith but does not have works?” And, after giving an example of faithful people ignoring the needs of the poor, James declares, “…..faith of itself, if it does not have works, is dead.” It is important that we DO something with our beautiful faith. Volunteer, donate, contribute, join, attend, invite, be a part of something bigger than yourself. Just going to Mass and saying a few prayers at home, for most of us, isn’t enough. We are called for a higher purpose than that.

In light of St. James Letter I compliment again the members of our St. Vincent de Paul Society, along with Diane and Alice in our office. These latter two politely talk with the many people who call in need of assistance. Our St. Vincent de Paul Society members receive this information from the office, then they make visits to the homes of the poor or they make phone calls on behalf of them so that electricity or gas stays on, food is attained, a roof stays over their head. In our area the poor are not told, “Go in peace, keep warm, and eat well.” In other words, “Good luck.” No, they are helped. Our St. Vincent de Paul Society makes sure of that. Why not consider joining them?

Of course, at this time of year so many great people are working to make our Fall Festival an enjoyable and profitable day. I’m grateful for all who have done so much and I encourage all of you to get involved. You won’t regret giving help to others!

My thanks to all who made last Sunday’s Blood Drive a successful day. Thanks to all who donated and to all who assisted.

Pray for God’s blessings for our Fall Festival and blessings for all of you. Father Hambrough

Teen Retreat

We are excited to extend an initiation from St. Louis Lifeteen for their (annual) fall retreat. The weekend of October 26-28 at Il Ritiro retreat center in Dittmer, MO (transportation not provided). This retreat weekend is for 9th-12th

graders and focuses on building community, encouraging prayer, and quieting our hearts to hear the heart of God.

The cost of the weekend is $150 and includes (the all-important!!) sweatshirt, retreat fee, musician, and all food. There are limited scholarships available through St. Louis Lifeteen.

For more information contact: Christina Sanders, St. Mark’s Pastoral Associate at [email protected] or

We want your smile! Those dedicated Soup Kitchen parishioners who help feed the homeless by cooking meals and/or serving

the meals are needed for a group photo for the Parish’s Pictorial Directory. A very quick photo session will be take place on Sunday, September 30th at 10:15 a.m. in the School Cafeteria. Members of the Soup Kitchen ministry are to arrive by 10:10 a.m. If you have any questions,

please contact Barb Haaser at [email protected] or Christina Sanders at 314.743.8604.

On Fall Festival Saturday, September 22, we will move the

afternoon Mass to 4:00 pm not 5:00 pm. Also, on that day there will not be a time for Confession.

Dear Parishioners,

This week our students in grades 3-8 will be taking their ITBS standardized tests. Please keep them in your prayers as they tackle a week full of testing. Luckily, they have a wonderful weekend to

look forward to. We are excited to have the Fall Festival on the school grounds. We pray that God blesses us with beautiful weather where we can enjoy great times with family and friends.

Julie Bingham

For those parishioners who were not able to pick up their FREE 8x10 photo from Lifetouch last weekend you may come to the Parish Office Monday-Thursday from 8:30 am—4:00 pm to pick it up. If you’d like to call beforehand to be sure that we have a picture for you, call Diane at 743-8600.

We welcome to our faith and to our parish Lily Marie Moran, daughter of Charles and Emily Moran, and Lennox Gene Johnson, son of Mark and Jessica Johnson, who were baptized last week. May God bless

and guide Lily, Lennox, and their families as they journey with Christ to the Kingdom.
