San Marco, prega per noi!

This week I want to tell you the story about when I first learned I was

coming here to St. Mark. Each year at the Gregorian University we

would have two weeks off for Easter. This gave us an opportunity to

experience the Triduum at St. Peter’s with the Holy Father and then

do some traveling after Easter. This past year Easter was on April

21st and the week following I was in Venice with a few of the other

priests with whom I lived. While I was there on Thursday, April 25th,

I received a call from Fr. Eric Johnson, the Vicar of Clergy for the

Archdiocese of Indianapolis. That was when I found out I was

coming to St. Mark!

At first I didn’t think the significance of where I was when I got this

news. I told the priests with me that I had my new assignment and

where it was. They immediately pointed out how providential it was

that we were in Venice! It is there that the body of St. Mark the

Evangelist is entombed in one of the most famous Cathedrals in all

the world, San Marco di Venezia. So I immediately went to the

Cathedral to visit St. Mark himself and ask for his prayers! I found

myself asking, “What are the odds that I would be right here, literally

two minutes away, when I got the news I was going to a parish

named in honor of you?”

The story of how St. Mark’s body ended up in Venice is a very

interesting one. To summarize it briefly: St. Mark died in Alexandria,

Egypt, around the year 68 AD, where tradition holds that he

established the first Christian community there. Given how important

he was to the Church, not only a companion of St. Paul, but one of

the Evangelists (author of a Gospel). The Christians in Alexandria

kept close watch over the tomb of St. Mark as a holy shrine until

Christianity became legal and a Church was built over it to honor the

relics. In the 9th century, when Islam took over Egypt and began

persecuting Christians, the church which was built to honor St. Mark

in Alexandria was destroyed and the body of St. Mark had to be

smuggled out for safekeeping. Merchants from the city of Venice did

this by wrapping the bones and packing them beneath a shipment of

pork headed for Italy (traditionally Muslims do not eat pork, and do

not touch the meat, and so the shipment would not be inspected

closely). When the relics of the saint arrived in Venice, they were

immediately enshrined in the Doge’s palace until the 11th century

when the current magnificent Cathedral was built to house St.

Mark’s body. To this day, St. Mark Cathedral and the square outside

of it are the most famous landmarks in Venice. Because the body of

such an important saint found its way to the city, the Archbishop of

Venice became known as a “Patriarch,” a title usually reserved for

bishops of cities with Apostolic foundations (like Jerusalem, Antioch,

and of course Rome). That is why Angelo Roncalli was known as

the “Patriarch of Venice” before he became Pope John XXIII.

I have been here at St. Mark now for almost three months and I pray

to him for his intercession often. But I will never forget the first time I

learned I was coming here. St. Mark was right there with me from

the beginning. May he continue to watch over us and help us all

grow closer to Christ, just as he did for the world when he wrote his

Gospel. St. Mark, pray for us! —Fr. Tim Wyciskalla

Parish Life

MINISTRY FOR MATURING ADULTS

St. Mark Young Adults

Life is not, nor ever has been, a straight line forward....Life is

characterized much more by exception and disorder than by

total or perfect order. Life, as the biblical tradition makes

clear, is both loss and renewal, death and resurrection,

chaos and healing at the same time; life seems to be a

collision of opposites. Fr. Richard Rohr

God has called each of us to be holy...to be our best selves.

St. Mark the Evangelist Parish invites you to join the Ministry

for Maturing Adults (MMA). You will engage with other adults

about life and spirituality, to strengthen your faith, and

provide the connection between faith and life.
