Dear friends, I want to give a big ‘shout out’ to Deacon Tom, our Sunday Morning Religious Education (SMRE) catechists and all of the parish families who have registered children and youth for the new year of religious education classes at St. Mark.

On the day of a child’s baptism, parents make a promise to God and to the Church to raise the child in the ways of faith. This is the dia-logue that takes place at the beginning of the baptismal liturgy: “You have asked to have your child baptized. In doing so you are accepting the responsibility of training him/her in the practice of the faith. It will be your duty bring him/her up to keep God’s command-ments as Christ taught us, by loving God and neighbor. Do you clear-ly understand what you are undertaking?” A priest or deacon can only proceed with the baptism if he has moral certitude that the parents are sincere in making this promise. While the parents are, and always will be, the principal teachers of their children in the ways of faith, the parish offers what I would call ‘irreplaceable’ assistance through its religious education programs. I say irreplaceable in the sense not only of the content of faith that is taught in our Catholic schools and religious education programs, but the experience of community that is an essential part of living our Christian faith. Our SMRE classes are small Christian communities in which the faith is taught, modeled and lived. It’s not too late to register for SMRE! In fact, in the coming days Dea-con Tom and I will be calling parish families who have not yet regis-tered their children making a personal invitation from our parish com-munity to allow us to help share the treasure of faith and help parents fulfill the promise they made to God and the Church on the day of their child’s baptism. Next weekend Fr. Jerry Kirkhoff will celebrate the Masses at St. Mark. I know that you will give him a warm welcome home to the parish. I will be serving as Spiritual Director for a Men’s Cursillo Weekend in Anderson, Indiana, and am very grateful to Fr. Jerry – who is just beginning his retirement, for his willingness to keep the good ship that is St. Mark afloat. I appreciate your prayers for a Spirit-filled Cursillo weekend. I have been fortunate to be a part of the Cursillo Communi-ty for the last fifteen years. If anyone who would like information on Cursillo and the weekend retreat opportunities that are offered to both men and women twice a year, I’d be happy to share from my own personal experience of a movement that has brought the faith alive in new and exciting ways for many, many Catholics.

See you at Mass!

Message from Father Todd Q. I have heard that the Catholic Church is opposed to the

“Ice Bucket Challenge” that is sweeping the nation in sup-port of ALS research. Can that be true? A. ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a progressive neu-rodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. The death of the motor neurons in the brain makes it impossible for the brain to initiate and control muscle movement. In its final stages, ALS leads to total paralysis. While there is still no cure for ALS, many researchers are dedicating their lives to finding treatments and an eventual cure. The research has led to a wealth of information about this terrible disease. Prominent among the groups engaged in this research is the ALS Association. “The Ice Bucket Challenge” is an effort to raise awareness and funds to assist the ALS Association in this re-search. To date, over sixty-three million dollars has been raised through “The Ice Bucket Challenge” for this research. Certainly the Church is both sympathetic to and supportive of this research. The difficulty with the ALS Association is its use of em-bryonic stem cells in its research. The Catholic Church holds that all life is sacred and that it is immoral to produce and destroy a human embryo using it as a disposable biological material. The moral principle that guides the Church comes from St. Thomas Aquinas who taught that the end does not justify the means. A good end cannot be brought about by an evil means. Both the end and the means employed to arrive at that end must be good for an act to be morally good. An example would be lying on a resume in order to get a good job. The ‘end’ of getting a good job is a good thing. But that good end cannot be justified by a bad or evil means such as lying. Applied to ALS research conducted by the ALS Association the Church teaches that the good end of seeking treatments and a cure for ALS cannot be justified by the evil means of destroying human life to arrive at a cure. Fortunately, there is a group conducting research in support of a cure for ALS that does not use embryonic stem cells in its re-search. The John Paul II Medical Research Institute in Iowa City, Iowa, conducts research that respects and promotes the Church’s moral and ethical principles. The Archdiocese asks groups and individuals that would like to participate in “The Ice Bucket Challenge” or other activities in sup-port of ALS research to direct funds raised through the challenge to a group such as The John Paul II Medical Research Institute (www.jp2mri.org). Let us pray that God will bless the work of finding treatments and a cure for ALS.

Q. The death of Robin Williams was tragic. It brought up a lot of conversations in my family about suicide and what the Church teaches. Some of my relatives say that a Catholic who dies by suicide cannot have a funeral Mass. Is that true?

A. In addition to being a comic genius, Robin Williams was, by all ac-counts, a very kind, compassionate and generous person. Many, many stories are being told of acts of kindness that Williams extended to very ordinary people. We have all been impacted by his death be-cause he was, in many ways, a part of our lives. A fellow comedian remarked that Williams spent his life on earth making us laugh and that he will now spend eternity making God laugh. We certainly hope that will be true. There was a time in which a Cath-olic who died by suicide could not have a Funeral Mass or be buried in a Catholic cemetery. Fortunately, that was some decades ago, but it is a sad fact. In the Jubilee Year of 2000, Pope John Paul II aston-ished the world by humbly asking for forgiveness of those who had been hurt by the Church in the course of the centuries. Certainly the lack of compassion toward those who died by suicide and their griev-ing families who were denied the comfort of the funeral rites for their loved ones also merits an apology. While the Church’s teaching remains the same, her pastoral under-standing and practice has, fortunately, changed. Those who die by suicide are afforded Catholic funeral rites and are buried in Catholic cemeteries. The teaching of the Church is this: God is the giver of life and all life is sacred from the moment of conception until natural death. The taking of an innocent human life violates that sanctity and is grave sin. In order for a sin to be ‘mortal’ sin there must, however, be full and free consent of the will. Psychological disturbances, anguish, paralyzing fear or suffering can diminish this consent. The Church, therefore, is much more careful today in attributing subjective guilt to the act of suicide recognizing that God alone reads the depths of our soul. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states, “We should not despair of the eternal salvation of persons who have taken their own lives. By ways known to Him alone, God can provide the opportunity for salu-tary repentance. The Church prays for persons who have taken their own lives” (2283). This is true for Robin Williams and for family and friends who have died by suicide. We are privileged to have a support group for families and friends whose lives have been impacted by suicide at St. Mark. Hope and Healing SOS meets on the second Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the school Media Cen-ter. I am especially proud that our parish hosts this support group as a way of extending the compassion and understanding of Jesus to family and friends who desperately seek this compassion and understanding. Robin Williams’ death and the impact it has had on all of us is also a reminder of the importance of studying suicide and its prevention. The upcoming Out of the Darkness Community Walk on Saturday, September 13th is an important way for all of us to lend our hearts and hands to this important work.
