Dear friends, God continues to bless St. Mark in many ways! In these days we welcome Paul Fisherkeller and Deacon Adam Ahern to our parish community.

Paul and his wife, Sandy, come to St. Mark from Saints Francis and Clare Parish where they have been very active members. Paul has been accepted into the Permanent Diaconate Program of the Archdiocese and is beginning his theological, spiritual and pastoral formation. Paul has been assigned to St. Mark for his pastoral experience and we are delighted to welcome Paul, Sandy and their family to our parish community. During the com-ing four years Paul will be involved in many aspects of parish life at St. Mark. He will have a great mentor in Deacon Tom! We are also delighted to welcome Deacon Adam Ahern to St. Mark. Deacon Adam was ordained to the transitional deaconate by Archbishop Tobin on April 26. He is entering his final year of theological studies at St. Meinrad and will be ordained to the priesthood in June of 2015. Deacon Adam will exercise his pas-toral ministry among us for ten weeks this summer. Adam is from Saint Anthony of Padua Parish in Morris, Indiana. He served in the U.S. Army from 1999-2008 in both Afghanistan and in the Situation Room at the White House. We welcome Seminarian James Brockmeier home for a few days before he begins a summer chaplaincy program in Indian-apolis. Each summer seminarians experience a different aspect of pastoral ministry in preparation for ordination to the priesthood. Last summer James studied Spanish and assisted in the multi-cultural programs of the Archdiocese. This summer he will gain firsthand experience of hospital ministry. Welcome home, James! Deacon Danny Bedel, who spent last summer at St. Mark, will be ordained to the priesthood by Archbishop Tobin on Saturday, June 7. He will celebrate his First Mass of Thanksgiving at his home parish of St. John the Evangelist in Enochsburg on Sun-day, June 8. The following Sunday, June 15, ‘Father Danny’ will return to St. Mark for a Mass of Thanksgiving at 11:45 a.m. A reception will follow Mass in Monsignor Schafer Hall. . All are welcome to join in thanking God for the gift of Danny’s vocation and to pray for a fruitful ministry. The Archdiocese will take up a special collection for the formation of future priests on ordination weekend, June 7-8. Let us be gen-erous in supporting men like Danny, Adam and James as they follow Jesus’ call to service in the Church. And let us continue to pray for the gift of vocations from our parish community of St. Mark! See you at Mass!

Question of Week Letter From Father Todd Q. I know that we have a lot of servers at St. Mark and that is good. I have noticed that one of them dresses differently than the others. Why? A. You are right – we are blessed with a wonderful group of servers at St. Mark! We almost always have three serv-ers at Mass and sometimes six! There is a server rotation list that tries to make sure that everyone gets an opportuni-ty to serve as often as possible. Last year one of our eighth grade servers told us that serving at the altar is when he feels closest to God. Serving is a great privilege and we are grateful that so many of our youth fulfill this ministry.

You are also right that one server dresses differently than the others. This is the server who has a chair next to the priest and deacon on the sanctuary. This server is called a ‘Vocation Advocate’. Usually the Vocation Advocate at Sunday Mass is a high school youth who has experience serving. The Vocation Advocate has special responsibili-ties at Mass and oversees the other servers. This server wears a cassock and surplice. The black robe and white tunic were the traditional vesture of acolytes. For a long part of our Church’s history, the ‘acolyte’ was one of the minor orders in preparation for the priesthood. The acolyte would light candles and assist in setting up the altar at the offertory of the Mass. Today servers fulfill the function of the acolyte in parishes. The ministry of our Vocation Ad-vocate is closest to that of the acolyte.

The other servers wear an alb – a white robe with a cinc-ture or rope belt that corresponds to the color of the liturgi-cal season. These servers are usually in fifth grade through high school and, like the Vocation Advocate, as-sist at Mass carrying candles in the entrance and reces-sional processions and at the time of the proclamation of the Gospel, helping to carry the gifts from the offertory pro-cession, assisting the deacon and/or Vocation Advocate prepare the altar, washing the priest’s hands and assisting the priest or deacon with the purification of the vessels after Holy Communion.

Thank you for your financial and spiritual support Be sure to pick up a prayer card in the Narthex.
