Dear friends, This weekend we enter a very short Fourth Week of Advent and then this sea-son of holy anticipation blossoms into Christmas. Together with all of our parish staff with whom I am privileged to minis-ter, I wish you a blessed, peaceful and

joyful Christmas! For most of us the week before Christmas is filled with last minute and perhaps frantic preparations for Christmas. Christ-mas Eve is a deadline that looms before us. Our shopping, decorating, baking and worrying have to be complete before the last store closes and the Christmas Masses begin! As Christmas descends upon us, the world, at least for a few hours, is different. Cease-fires are called, enemies speak to one another, strangers wish each other well, churches are filled, the poor are remembered and that peace on earth the angels proclaimed seems within reach. The power of Christ-mas is great on young and old alike. Christmas is the story of a gift unlike any other gift. On that first Christmas, over two thousand years ago, God gave us His own beloved Son. With the gift of Jesus, God gave us His very heart. If we ever wonder how much God loves us, all we have to do is remember Christmas and the gift we celebrate. It is a gift that we will never outgrow, a gift that will never break or go out of fashion. And there is good news for all of us who lament how quickly Christmas seems to come each year. Christmas is not over on Christmas Day – it’s just beginning. While stores may be putting out heart-shaped boxes of chocolates for Valentine’s Day on December 26, we Christians have an entire season to take in the meaning of Christmas and to celebrate it as it de-serves. The week following Christmas is called the octave of Christmas and each day of the octave is treated as Christmas Day. The Christmas season then continues through the Feast of the Epiphany on January 6 and then, at least officially, for one more week until the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord on January 13. What this means is that there is still plenty of time to send out Christmas cards, to find that perfect gift, to gather family and friends for get-togethers and to echo Tiny Tim’s beautiful pray-er, “God bless us - everyone!” Let our Christmas celebration begin – at Mass!

Life and Money with Phil Lenahan © – www.VeritasFinancialMinistries.com

Our society has become cavalier in its attitude toward borrowing money. Scripture is clear that we should be cautious when we borrow (Pr 22:7). The Catechism stresses the importance of keeping our promises, including the repayment of debts (CCC 2411). As stewards of Providence, it’s important that we use prudence when borrowing.

Experiences of People with Disabilities

On a daily basis, people with disabilities encounter folks who are nervous around them, not knowing what to say or what to do. They just want to be seen as the whole person they are.

Question of the Week Lumen Gentium Chapter Four: The Laity Q. Who are the laity and what is the laity’s mission in the Church? A. Lumen Gentium begins its discussion on the role of the laity in the Church by affirming the laity’s indispensable contribution to the welfare of the whole Church. The laity are defined as the baptized faithful who are not in Holy Orders or members of Reli-gious Orders. What distinguishes them is the fact that they are ‘secular’ bringing the values of the Gospel proclaimed by Christ and His Church to the world in which they live. The Christian laity are called by God to be leaven for the sanctification of the world. The laity are called to make the Church present and op-erative in those places where only they can make it present and be ‘salt for the earth’ as Jesus has commanded us. The laity share in the mission of Jesus, priest, prophet and king. They join the joys and sorrows of their everyday lives to Jesus in His sacrifice at the Mass and become ‘living sacrifices’. The laity share in Jesus’ proclamation of the Kingdom by living their lives as messengers of hope and by word and the witness of life proclaim God’s Kingdom. Within the Christian family, members witness to Christ’s love and grow in that love that is at the heart of the Gospel. The family, as a unit, in living the Christian life witnesses to God’s Kingdom and to His power to transform our lives. As leaders in society, the laity are called to follow Jesus, the servant leader, seeking the good of others and of society as a whole. The laity have as their mission to transform the culture and to promote virtue where moral values are lacking, preparing the world for God’s Word. The laity have a right and a duty to share their needs and ex-press their concerns to their spiritual shepherds. The clergy, in turn, have an obligation to seek advice from the laity and to en-courage and promote their initiatives for the good of the Church and society. Each lay person is a witness to Christ’s death and resurrection and a symbol of the living God. Reflection Questions

What are ways in which I try to bring Gospel virtues to my place of work or study?

How intentional am I in being a Christian witness in my pro-fessional life?

What is a custom that needs to be transformed in the cul-ture of my time and how could I contribute to this trans-formation?
