AFTERWORD….Fr. Dave Howell Over the next five Wednesday evenings, I will offer a 30 minute explanation on the Liturgy. This Wednesday’s presentation will be an overview of the Mass. ABOUT THE SCRIPTURES The Liturgy of the Word leads us to under-stand the Scriptures and to live them. The Bible is not a book, it is a collection of books written over 1,000 years in many different styles or genres. The Bible is divided into the Old Testament (the Hebrew Scriptures) and the New Testament (the Christian Scriptures). For the Catholic & Orthodox Churches there are 46 books in the OT and 27 books in the NT (the Jewish and Protestant Bibles have fewer books in the Old Testament.) When you look at the table of contents of your Catholic Bible, you see that the Old Testament is divided further into four sections. The first is the Pentateuch (from a Greek word meaning 5 books). Second are the historical books, then the books of Wisdom and finally the prophetic books. In the Jewish Bible there are only three subdivisions: the Torah (the first five books), the Prophets (the historical books plus the prophets) and the Writings (Wisdom books). The New Testament is subdivided into (1) the Gospels, (2) The Acts of the Apostles (the history of the early Church), (3) the Letters of the Apostles, and (4) the Book of Revelation. The word Scriptures means writings, but in fact most of the Bible was actually began as material that was passed from one generation to the next orally. Usually it was times of crisis that were the cause for writing down these oral traditions to preserve them. The Torah or Pentateuch was the first section to be written. In 598 BC, the Babylonians conquered Jerusalem and many Jewish people were carried off into exile. During the Jewish exile, the Torah was put into a written form and houses of study or synagogues were organized to promote the study of the Law of God. Gradually, these houses of study became houses of prayer. The exiles came together on the Sabbath to read the Torah and to pray. As time passed, the Torah was broken up into lessons to be read each Sabbath so that all of the Torah was read during the course of a year. The Church followed this practice and a Lectionary, a "book of lessons" for Sundays and weekdays. In 1969, a new lectionary for Sundays created three cycles. In year A, the Gospel of Matthew predominates. In year B, the Gospel of Mark predominates. In year C, the Gospel of Luke predominates. The purpose of the 3 year cycle is to have the community hear all the important passages of the Bible. Fr. Dave Howell

COVID-19 (Coronavirus) The CDC says that COVID-19 spreads from person to per-son through, respiratory droplets when an infected per-son coughs or sneezes. While it may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching something that has the virus on it and then touching their own face, this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads. St. Mark will not suspend our Liturgical Practices, but we ask that you use your discretion. If you feel sick, have a cough or fever please refrain from contact with others, as well as, refrain from reception of Holy Communion from the cup. At the greeting or the sign of peace a ver-bal greeting or hand gesture is acceptable. Folding your hands during the Lord’s Prayer is suggested. We have put Hand Sanitizer at the entrances to our facilities. Please be conscious of this and let’s continue to pray as all communities begin to deal with this virus.

Ron’s thoughts….. I know I spend a lot of time trying to tell others to “BE JESUS TO OTHERS.” I have always believed this is our mission and purpose as Christians to be his hands and feet right here, right now. People say to me, “How can I BE JESUS at school, in the workplace, to my family, or even in my community?” The answer is pretty simple and we find that answer each time we open the Gospels and listen to the stories of Jesus’ meetings with others. He would listen. He would show kindness and compas-sion. He would not condemn, control or bully. He gave people hope. He treated others with respect and digni-ty. He loved as one would love their own child or broth-er or sister. Like the Woman at the well, who didn’t deserve his time as most would say, Jesus gave her his time, his compassion and forgiveness. He gave her what she thirsted for, new life and she drank it. She was filled with joy and she shared it and those around her saw that peace and yes they wanted it too. There is a famous Latin expression, Nemo dat quo non habat. It means, “No one gives what he does not have.” We cannot bring God to others if we do not have Him ourselves. We cannot BE JESUS TO OTHERS if we don’t have him ourselves. Our challenge is to con-tinue finding ways to drink of the LIVING WATER that he offers each of us and watch how YOUR LIFE is filled with joy and peace. Our Lenten journey continues…. Walk the talk. If you have not yet made a gift or a pledge, I invite you to do so today. Gift envelopes are available in church or the parish office. Or you may submit your gift online at www.dioceseoflansing.org/dsa. Your DSA gift will support the vital services and ministries that help bring the love of Christ to all we encounter.
