A cup of Joe . . . I don't even have the words to express my gratitude to you for how ridiculously generous you were with me in the Christmas season. I am so grateful for the outpouring of love...the encouraging notes, the gifts and the marvelous food. It really touched my heart and I am grateful. Not only that, but Marius had his best Christmas ever, thanks to you all! I gotta tell you, I've often adopted older dogs like Marius who have had a rough life. I usually only get these dogs for a few years and my goal is always to make sure their last few years are good ones. Of all the dogs I've had, Marius had the roughest start and because of you, his last years are good. I think of Pope Benedict pointing out that since animals only have this life on earth, it is our duty to make sure their life here is good. I have some good news to share with both of my parish families. Shortly after I arrived, I contacted the diocese and asked for a list of priests who would be retiring in 2019. We have the wonderful rectory at St. Mark and my thinking was that we could offer it to a good priest who needed a community. After a little process, Deacon Ron and I worked out an arrangement with Fr. David Howell, who is currently serving as Pastor at St. Mary Magdalene in Brighton, MI. Sometime in July, he will move into the rectory at St. Mark and become a part of the community there. I cannot tell you how happy I am to have such a holy and kind priest moving here with us ...praise God. Speaking of priests, Fr. Bill has his car back and will begin serving as a Chaplain in our area for nursing home, hospitals and the like, as well as serving the poor in the Flint area. We will see him less here, but he is still a part of our parish families. So, there we are. I'm very grateful to God for you and very excited for our future. One of you gave me a wonderful plaque that reads "The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy" and I share this with you and invite you to claim this truth in the name of Christ. May God fill our hearts with joy in this coming year!

THE WAY TO HEAVEN Love of heaven is the only way to heaven. —John Henry Newman

ROOTEDNESS The flower does not bear the root. The root bears the flower. The rose is merely evidence of the vitality of the root. —Woodrow Wilson

FINDING GOD The splendid magi, all sparkle and dash and solemnity, march right up off the pages of Matthew’s Gospel and into our churches today. Matthew alone tells us this grand and seductive story so that we might see the light and know that the child these magi visited is the fulfillment of prophecy, the king of the world that stretches to the magi’s home country and beyond, right down the ages to us. We too see and understand anew. Like the magi, our patron saints for this day, we see in the newborn child the king of the universe and light of the world. Like the magi, we find in ourselves a new faith and a new life. Like them, we return to our home by a new route. We are asked to come away from this festive season ourselves renewed and awake to the presence of God among us. We are asked to find God where God is to be found, to be attentive and surprised and ready to bow down in adoration and to offer our gifts. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! To all who in some way helped out with the Children’s Christmas Eve Pageant. To all the parents for their support and help, the children for their willingness to share a really good story and to Anna Boomer, Alexis, Jessica and Elsie Velazquez, Lilly Wiles, Josie Schmelzer and Katie Rusinek for all the behind the scenes help with guiding the kids each year and to Kelly Alford who always captures the moment in a wonderful slideshow. And to Mike Goetz and Joyful Noise for always filling the story with beautiful music. Dcn. Ron

Ron’s thoughts….. In 2001 the State of Michigan instituted a new law that grants immunity to a parent who abandons their baby to an emergency worker. Although I believe it is necessary, it just horrified me to think that we need such a law. It is not just about, “what has our society come to,” but it is about, “what has our way of thinking come to.” I believe that what we need is to change within ourselves, our thinking. I know I am preaching to the choir, but it goes beyond the horrifying thought behind this law. It is how we have moved away from what we hear each Sunday, Jesus’ teachings, that has led to such laws. It is how we have put ourselves first, as opposed to what Jesus taught us in putting others first. It is about how our morals and values are more based on what works for me rather than what impact this has on others. We don’t need to make laws to make us do the right thing, we need to look to our Christ and his Gospel and all else will fall into place. As I always say, whether its work, school or family, we need to think about where Jesus and the Gospel fit into what we do every day and all day. A law cannot and should not change our way of thinking, only the way we choose to live with Christ or without. Law or no law, start each day by saying, “Today I Am Going To Put GOD FIRST!” Walk the talk! Be Peace! Dcn. Ron ([email protected])
