Sunday Readings and Reflection Today’s Readings

First Reading — The Israelites ate of the yield of the land of Canaan (Joshua 5:9a, 10-12) or 1 Samuel 16:1b, 6-7, 10-13a. Psalm — Taste and see the goodness of the Lord (Psalm 34) or Psalm 23. Second Reading — Whoever is in Christ is a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17-21) or Ephesians 5:8-14. Gospel — This man welcomes sinners and eats with them (Luke 15:1-3, 11-32) or John 9:1-41 [1, 6-9, 13-17, 34-38].

God Forgives The Lord said to Joshua, “Today I have removed the reproach of Egypt from you.” After forty years of wandering in the desert, this hard-headed peo-ple have finally reached the Promised Land. No more do they eat the manna in the desert, but they partake of the fruits of their new homeland. God has kept the promise to their parents in Egypt. Even though they were a sinful people, many times questioning God and even worshiping false gods, God has forgiven them and fulfilled the promise. The “take-away” for us is that there is no sin that is unforgivable. We may have offended our neighbors, given a bad example to someone, even worshiped the false gods of money and power. But God is a merciful God, true to the words spoken to us. God forgives all and calls us back to love. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Dear Parish Family, I wanted to say thanks to everyone who supported the Priests vs. Seminarians basketball game last week. The seminarians won for the first time, and it was a great event for everyone! I’m thankful so many people showed up to cheer or watched the game online because we could feel the support and the encouragement that people give their priests and seminarians. Next year’s game

will be on April 17, 2020, so you can mark your calendars! Also, I wanted to alert you to a change to this year’s Church calendar. Many of you have been seeing the incredible progress or our new Chapel. It will be ready sometime this fall for a dedication. Since I don’t want to overload the parish staff and so many volunteers with too many big events this fall, we will take a year off for the parish festival and have our big parish celebration as a Chapel dedication party. We will resume the parish festival in 2020 but this year have a parish wide celebration on a Saturday sometime after the Chapel is dedicated. Since we aren’t sure when the chapel will be finished, the date of this celebration will be announced later as we get closer to the dedica-tion. We will let everyone know about the date of the Chapel Dedication cele-bration, so stay tuned! I hope you all continue to have a wonderful Lenten Season and May God continue to bless you! Fr. TJ

Stewardship

4th Sunday of Lent Today we hear one of the most beloved stories in the Gospel of Luke, Jesus’ parable of the Prodigal Son. Reconciliation is a prominent theme. Seeing the younger son returning to him, the son who left the family and squandered his inheritance, the compassionate father runs to embrace him. Jesus offers us a vision of a loving God who is merciful and forgiv-ing when we, through our own sinfulness, leave his presence, and then through repentance, return to him. The remainder of the Lenten sea-son offers us an opportunity to reflect on God’s compassion and our need for reconciliation. Consider celebrating the sacrament of reconcilia-tion and experience God’s loving embrace and forgiveness.

The blessing connects the Easter cele-bration with the “ecclesial,” the lit-tle Church of the home. The custom helps to bring Easter into the home around the family table.

As he passed by the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting their nets into the sea; they were fishermen. Jesus said to them, “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Then they left their nets and followed him. He walked along a little farther and saw James, the son of Zebe-dee, and his brother John. They too were in a boat mending their nets. Then he called them. So they left their father Zebedee in the boat along with the hired men and followed him. Mark 1:16-20

St. Martha’s Second Family Ministry

consists of a group of volunteers who provide personal presence and assistance to make life better for the weak and vulnerable and for those

who serve them. Through simple acts of kindness,

team members enable care “partners” to retain their independence and

self-esteem while offering primary caregivers respite from the demands of caring for a loved one.

If you or someone you know could benefit from Second Family Ministry, please contact

Sharon Voorhes at [email protected].

This ministry is also looking for additional volunteers. Please join us at our

next meeting, April 9, 7 PM at the Woodland Hills Campus, Room 5.

Stewardship Prayer for April: Christ Our Savior, as our Lenten journey brings us closer to Easter, we see with a deeper awareness our world’s desperate need to experience the healing power of your justice and peace. Make us sacraments of your mercy and instru-ments of your compassion. Show us how to be better stewards of your people; through our families, our brothers and sisters with whom we share your Eucharist, our neighbors, and the stranger. Show us how to carry the cross so that by dying to ourselves, we may give new life to others. And strengthen our faith, so that we may proclaim your Easter triumph more confidently, every day, in word and deed. Amen
