SUNDAY, OCTOBER 16, 2016 29TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

  • From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto ...

    OCTOBER 16, 2016

My Dear Friends, Prayer is the medium we use to communicate with God, and the readings in today’s Eucharist teach us a lesson on a particular aspect of prayer, which is perseverance in prayer! God will not be deaf to our needs, especially during hard times, just like the ones we are into. God will never abandon us; we must keep praying without getting discouraged by tragedies around us. Our

faith in God should be steadfast and unshakable because if we, human beings, could easily be swayed in our stubbornness by someone who trusts in our power to change the situation (as the judge and widow tale tells us), how much more justice does God then give to His chosen ones who call out to Him day and night? The key here is faith in God, as the final sentence shows us. There should be absolutely no doubt in anybody’s mind that God will do swift justice. But Jesus here is warning us that we, His faithful, may not remain loyal to Him during the period preceding the second coming.

Please note also the “time” frame which causes so much discouragement in all of us. We human beings think that a few weeks of prayers should do the trick, and we want “swift” justice because we have such a short span of terrestrial life, forgetting that physical death is just the beginning of our eternal life. “Swift” for the eternal God is relative to His eternity more than to our mortality. God knows that sooner or later the persecutors of Christians, and all other evil people, will eventually die, and receive their condemnation for all eternity! “Fear not little flock” then, and keep the faith… (and watch out for what you ask for ...you could get it…).

Next Sunday, October 23, is World Mission Sunday (Propagation of Faith). We are called in a special way - through prayer, personal sacrifice and participation in the Eucharist - to share our faith, to be missionaries, and to fulfill our Baptismal responsibility for the worldwide missionary task of the Church. Please be sure to read the message, regarding World Mission Sunday, from our Bishop Frank Dewane.

There are often times when some of our parishioners need help, and need to talk to someone. We are again in need of volunteer certified counselors to help with this ministry. If you can help, please call our Parish Office. God will bless you.

Once again, I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for all your love, prayers, suppor t, smiles, cards, cakes and gifts you lavished on this old Pastor this year - my 81st birthday. WOW! You are such wonderful people! Thank you! Thank you!

Please be generous to our Diocesan Faith Appeal, in support of our Diocese of Venice. We Catholics know that a parish is not an isolated entity, but is part of a territory called the Diocese. The explosive growth of St. Martha in these 100 years reflects also the Diocesan development of Florida, from one Diocese in 1913 to seven in 1984. The only Diocese of Florida in 1913 was

MARRIAGE BANNS Ryan Janssen & Amanda Raleigh (2)

Bryan Griffith & Jill Drayer (2)

the Diocese of St. Augustine, which claims to have the oldest Catholic Church, in continuous existence, in the USA: Our Lady of La Leche, established in 1565. At the time it was a mission of the Diocese of Havana, Cuba, in the Spanish Empire. In 1825, it was under the Diocese of Mobile, AL. In 1850, it passed under the Diocese of Savannah, Ga., which embraced all of Georgia and Florida, save for the Florida Panhandle, which remained under the Diocese of Mobile. The Bishop Augustin Verot, Bishop of Savannah, became Vicar-Apostolic of Florida in 1857, and first Bishop of St. Augustine in 1870. In 1958, with the post-WWII boom, the Diocese of Miami was created, and in 1968 became an Archdiocese, when two new Dioceses were created in St. Petersburg and in Orlando. A fifth Diocese (Pensacola-Tallahassee) was created in 1975 for the Florida Panhandle, and two others in 1984: Palm Beach and our own Diocese of Venice of Florida, established by Pope Blessed John Paul II, having as first Bishop, John J. Nevins (1984-2007), whom our present Bishop Frank J. Dewane succeeded in January 2007.

It is so amazing to see the development of our Catholic Faith in our semi-tropical paradise, (but the state also with the greatest number of hurricanes of any state of the union 40%) from the oldest USA parish (1565) to seven Dioceses which comprise the Ecclesiastical Province of Miami.

Our Diocese now embraces 10 counties in Southwest Florida, with an area of 9,035 square miles, a population of over 2 million, with 60 churches and over 230,000 Catholics!

Next Saturday, October 22, we will be celebrating the grand opening of the Zazarino Center with a Dinner and Dance at 6 p.m. in St. Anne Hall. Tickets are limited, but still available. Please contact Laura Osborn at 941-953-4181 for information.

A Message from our Bishop… Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

On Sunday, October 23, 2016, Catholics around the world celebrate World Mission Sunday, with the theme being “Mercy Changes the World.” Pope Francis invites the entire Church to support various young mission dioceses in Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, as well as parts of Latin American and Europe. The priests, religious and lay leaders of these dioceses serve some of the poorest and most underdeveloped regions in the world.

Supporting these struggling Dioceses with your prayers and yes, bountiful offerings, are indeed ways to fulfull the objective Pope Francis has giving to all. The celebration of World Mission Sunday unites us all with our brothers and sisters in need. The funds collected will aid the poor in many ways including: the formation of catechists and lay leaders, providing emergency aid, education, building of churches/chapels as well as the construction of health facilities and much more.

In the Diocese of Venice, the World Mission Sunday Collection will take place the weekend of October 22-23, 2016. Along with your prayers, please be generous in aiding the Missions with your collection gift for the Society of the Propagation of the Faith. Thank you for your kindness!

I take this opportunity to extend to each of you the assurances of my continued consideration, as well as my prayers for you and your family

Sincerely yours in Christ, + Bishop Frank J. Dewane

    ST. LUKE OCTOBER 18

The tradition of the early Church considers the author of two volumes (a gospel and the Acts of the Apostles) to be a certain Luke, a

physician and companion of Paul (Colossians 4:14; Philemon 24; 2 Timothy 4:11). While some scholars still maintain this tradition, most modern scholars are unsure of this identification. Like Luke, may we use our gifts to proclaim Jesus to those around us. Living with Christ

  • The efforts of those who build a Culture of Life must be sustained by prayer but not limited to prayer. As today's first reading notes, Moses' hands sustained in prayer were essential to victory, but the Israelites

also had to fight. Likewise, we must pray for an end to abortion, but we must also speak, organize, lobby, vote, protest and intervene.

    BULLETIN EMAIL: [email protected]

Prayer for Peace of Heart Almighty and Eternal God, give me,

I beseech You, the great gift of inward peace. Command the winds and storms of my unruly

passions. Subdue, by Your grace, my proneness to love created things too much.

Give me a love of suffering for Your sake. Make me forbearing and kind to others,

that I may avoid quarrels and contentions. And teach me constantly to seek after

and to acquire that perfect resignation to Your Holy Will which alone brings interior peace.

    Amen.

QUESTIONS FROM THE KIDS AT SCHOOL TO FR. FAUSTO!

    (SOME DEEP THEOLOGICAL THOUGHTS!)

Why did God make Satan if he knew he would be bad? How old was Fr. Fausto during WWI? Why would God send the ten plagues if God is love?

Let me introduce you to St. Martha’s oldest parishioner, Augusto “Gus” Andreone who turned 105 on September 30, 2016. What is amazing about the man is, he is the oldest living golf professional and golf instructor in the world, yes, I said the “world.” Gus lives at the Palmaire Country Club, with his wife Bette, off University Parkway.

Gus still plays two to three times a week and the swing is still as sweet as it was when he was a mere lad of 60 years old. He has played with most professional golfers and has stories that can make you laugh and cry about the Hall of Famers that he has played with over the years.

Hailing from Bridgeville, PA Gus caddied for years and became an assistant golf professional in 1934. Soon after, the war broke out and Gus was drafted and served in the Army under George Patton. After the war, he went back to his old club, St. Clair, in Pennsylvania. In 1947 he accepted a position as head professional for the Edgewood County Club in Pittsburg, PA, a position he held for 30 years.

Today, Gus and Bette often go out at night and play a few holes and continue to live a comfortable life for his age. He is now in the limelight for his accomplishments, on and off the golf course, being honored by the PGA and the Florida Golfer Professional Association.

If you ask him, he says the “the good Lord smiles on me and keeps me safe, especially at this age.”

  • Sunday, November 13 - Sugar Bowl Show of Shows Tickets are now available to see the Atlantic City Boys at the Venice Performing Arts Center at 2:00 p.m. All proceeds will go to the Sugar Bowl Fund for families in the community who are experiencing financial hardship. Tickets are $25-$35 per person. For tickets and information, visit www.veniceperformingartscenter.com. Saturday, November 19 - Volunteer Mass Bishop Frank J. Dewane invites all volunteers to a Mass of appreciation at 11:00 a.m. at Epiphany Cathedral, Venice. All priests, deacons, religious and the faithful are invited to participate in a celebration of the active stewardship of our laity. Election Guide—The Florida Bishops have approved a guide for pastors and parishes intended to encourage Catholic clergy and laity to facilitate the involvement of their faith communities in appropriate election related activities. These activities are designed to increase parishioner interest in the policy issues that will characterize election year debates, to focus their attention on candidate positions and encourage them to exercise their right to vote. To access the guide, available in English and Spanish, please visit http://www.flaccb.org/election-activities-and-guidelines

If we succeed in expressing adequately and with beauty the essential content of the Gospel, surely this message will speak to the deepest yearnings of people’s hearts. -Pope Francis
