TM the Collar For the fourthand inalSundayofAdventwearebroughtback to the Gospel of Luke, and its beautiful story of theannunciation.Thisstory ismarkedlydifferent fromthat inMatthew, where Joseph learns of Mary’s pregnancy in adream. InLuke, theangelGabriel,whichmeansGodismy
strength, appears to Mary. Gabriel’s greeting is repeatedeachtimewepraytheHailMaryandsoweareremindedofthis scene. As anyonemight be,Mary isgreatlytroubled.Howoftendoesanangelbeargreetings?UponhearingthenewsMarywondershowthiscanbe. In fact,manypeopletoday wonder the same. A virgin birth? How was Jesusconceived? The response given to us is the same as thatgiven to Mary: TheHolySpiritwill comeuponyou,andthe power of the Most High will overshadow you.NothingisimpossibleforGod.ThisisanactofGodsothatthe child, Jesus, will rightly be called theSonofGod. Hiskingdomwill last forever; he will be the Son of theMostHigh.ManychurchfathersspokeofhowinthatmomenttheentireplanofGodhunginthebalance,awaitingMary’syes.Human salvation, a free gift from God, depends uponhumancooperation.Inotherwords,God’sgiftisnotforcedbut available to be freely accepted. Saint Bernard ofClairvaux wrote, Theangelawaitsananswer; it is timefor him to return to God who sent him. We too arewaiting,OLady, foryourwordofcompassion. We thenhearMary’s iat, theLatinrenderingof letitbedone.Andagain, according to the church fathers, all heaven rejoices.Though we celebrated the Annunciation on March 25,precisely nine months prior to Christmas, we read thisgospel now, during the Fourth Sunday of Advent, becausethe incarnation was, in a certain way, dependent uponMary’sresponse.LatertheologianssawinheryesacountertoGenesis3,sothatMarycouldbecalledthenewEve.Herresponse to God was not to step outside the circle ofobedience, as we saw in Genesis 3, but to accept God’sdesign and to cooperate. As the response in Genesis ledultimatelytohumansinfulnessanddeath,Mary’sresponseleads to grace and new life. Perhaps we are not toosurprisedtolearnthatofallthegospelsitisLukethathasthemosttosayaboutwomen.InLuke’sstoryofthebirthofJesus, Mary plays a central role, setting the stage forcenturiesoftheologicalre lection.
