FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 23, 2018

This weekend we celebrate the fourth Sunday of Advent and prepare to end the Advent Season by transitioning to the Christmas Season. This weekend we conclude a five week homily series on the five keys that Neal Lozano writes about in the book Unbound. The five keys are meant to be five crucial responses that someone can make to release the power of the Gospel more fully into their hearts. Each key is meant to help us access God’s grace and unlock freedom which is represented by a door. The five keys are: repentance and faith, forgiveness, renunciation, authority and the Father’s blessing. Last week we reflected on the fourth key of authority. Every child of God carries the authority of the Father in the name of Jesus. In Luke 1:71, we learn that in Christ, you have “salvation from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us.” You do have enemies that have sought to rob you of your freedom. In the authority of Jesus, you can take a stand against them through repentance, forgiveness, and renunciation. The fifth and final key is the Father’s blessing. God wants to speak into our lives and reveal that He is our Father. He wants to affirm our identity, purpose and destiny. You need to be blessed in order to succeed in life. Blessing is the bread we need for our life's journey. Blessing means speaking words that empower someone to prosper and thrive. They are words that give life and peace. Words carry spiritual power. Every blessing that the Father spoke to Jesus now belongs to you. The Father reveals to us who we are as we come before him in the Son. What you have longed to hear all of your life has already been spoken by the Father. As you receive His blessing, you will be healed. We are truly free when the obstacles to God’s love have been removed and the Father’s love and affirmation is made real to us in Christ. This weekend’s Gospel reminds us of how God the Father blessed Mary through her cousin Elizabeth. We hear over and over how Mary is Blessed among women. Mary had a heart that was so open to God that she more fully received God’s blessing than any human being before her. Elizabeth is conveying a blessing that affirms Mary’s identity, purpose and destiny. Mary’s identity is the one who is Blessed among women. Mary’s purpose is to be the mother of God and we hear this conveyed in Blessed is the fruit of your womb. Mary’s destiny is to help people to believe that what God speaks to them will be fulfilled. We are called to bless one another as Elizabeth blessed Mary in today’s Gospel. When we bless someone we should ask God what is the identity, purpose and destiny that God wants us to affirm that person in. Let us rejoice in the Father’s blessing as we prepare to celebrate Christmas,

Fr. Charlie

Jesus was born during the night of the year when darkness is the longest. The Savior of the world comes for the people in dark places. The real, lasting, and deep joy is that the Light shines there.

Through your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, “Light” has shown, bringing real, lasting and deep joy to the hearts of the poor who live in dark places in our streets and neighborhood.

Food Pantry Needs: Rotel Tomatoes, Canned or Packaged Tuna and Chicken, Chili, Soups, Granola Bars, Canned Peaches and Cheese/Peanut Butter Crackers.

The Season of Giving This Christmas season, we thank everyone who has supported St. Martin de Porres this past year with their time, talent and financial contributions and look forward to support from all of our members in the year ahead. If you need a convenient way to make regular offerings or if you plan to make an additional gift before the end of the year, we encourage you to check out our on-line giving option. As the pace of life speeds up, especially around the holidays, you may find on-line giving a most welcome way to make contributions. Visit our website, www.stmartindp.org and click on WeShare. If you have questions, please contact Judy Tixier, [email protected]. “Give to the Most High as He has given to you, generously, according to your means. For the Lord is one who always repays, and He will give back to you sevenfold.” (Sirach 35:9-10)

Fr. Charlie, deacons and staff would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas.
