DEAR PARISH FAMILY …

In an on-going effort to assist our parishioners who have need for a little extra care and attention, we instituted more than a year ago the designation of the first pew in each of the 4 sections in the nave of the Church for your use during the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. These reserved pews allow our Ministers of Hospitality/Ushers to ensure you are properly accommodated and also to enable our Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion to distribute Eucharist in a dignified and reverential manner.

To further assist you, we have now added the first pew in each wing for your convenience as well. Combined with the additional handicap parking spaces that far exceed what we are mandated to have by code and site plan, we have made it a priority and continue to make every effort to provide safe and reasonable accommodation for those in our Parish Family who require a little extra help. We only ask that you help us by making yourself aware of these changes that are for our mutual benefit.

While our Ministers of Hospitality/Ushers always do their best to provide helpful assistance at the 3 main Entrances, for those who cannot reach one of the six designated handicap rows on their own, even with the assistance of aids due to extreme weakness or shortness of breath, we suggest using the Northern Entrance (adjacent to statue of BVM) where someone can more easily assist you and, if needed, provide a wheelchair for those with significant medical problems.

So to be clear … the front rows of each of the 6 different sections in our Church are to be used by those who require a little extra assistance and who are either unable or prefer not to process up for reception of Holy Communion due to health or age related needs. Clergy and EM’s have been notified and instructed to distribute Eucharist to those in these front pews first followed by the rest of the assembly.

Thank You and God Bless!

We apologize for the error in past bulletins regarding the delineation of the pews reserved for our parishioners with special needs. This is a corrected version. Thank you for your understanding.

As the Thirteenth Anniversary of the horrific attacks on our nation that occurred on September 11, 2001 approaches, our Parish Family will honor all the brave men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty on that terrible day in our history at our 9th Annual Memorial Blue Mass. The Blue Mass refers to the blue

uniforms worn by so many public safety personnel. It is meant to honor those who daily protect and serve us. At the Mass, we will remember law enforcement officers, firefighters and emergency rescue personnel who have fallen in the line of duty and

pray for the safety of all officers.

Our tribute will begin on September 11th at 10:00 AM with the Blue Mass immediately following. After Mass, all are welcome to attend a luncheon in the

Tuscany Banquet room of the San Mart’ Inn located on Parish grounds.

A donation will be accepted from all non-uniformed guests to help defray expenses.

"Orans" Posture and Hand-Holding during the Our Father are against the Rubrics (Instructions) for the Mass

Colin B. Donovan, STL, over at the EWTN website, states that the "Orans' posture in the congregation (arms outstretched in a "praying" or adoration position) is contrary to the rubrics: The liturgical use of this position by the priest is spelled out in the rubrics (the laws governing how the Mass is said). It indicates his praying on BEHALF of us, acting as alter Christus as pastor of the flock, head of the body. . . It is never done by the Deacon, who does not represent the People before God but assists him who does. Among the laity this practice began with the Charismatic Renewal. Used in private prayer it has worked its way into the Liturgy. It is a legitimate gesture to use when praying, as history shows, however, it is a private gesture when used in the Mass and in some cases conflicts with the system of signs which the rubrics are intended to protect. The Mass is not a private or merely human ceremony. The symbology of the actions, including such gestures, is definite and precise, and reflects the sacramental character of the Church's prayer. . . . Our Father. The intention for lay people using the Orans position at this time is, I suppose, that we pray Our Father, and the unity of people and priest together is expressed by this common gesture of prayer. Although this gesture is not called for in the rubrics, it does at least seem, on the surface, to not be in conflict with the sacramental sign system at the point when we pray Our Father. I say on the surface, however, since while lay people are doing this the deacon, whose postures are governed by the rubrics, may not do it. So, we have the awkward disunity created by the priest making an appropriate liturgical gesture in accordance with the rubrics, the deacon not making the same gesture in accordance with the rubrics, some laity making the same gesture as the priest not in accordance with the rubrics, and other laity not making the gesture (for various reasons, including knowing it is not part of their liturgical role). In the end, the desire of the Church for liturgical unity is defeated. After Our Father. This liturgical disunity continues after the Our Father when some, though not all, who assumed the Orans position during the Our Father continue it through the balance of the prayers, until after "For Thine is the Kingdom etc." The rubrics provide that priest-concelebrants lower their extended hands, so that the main celebrant alone continues praying with hands extended, since he represents all, including his brother priests. So, we have the very anomalous situation that no matter how many clergy are present only one of them is praying with hands extended, accompanied by numbers of the laity. So, while we shouldn't attribute bad will to those who honestly have felt that there was some virtue in doing this during the Mass, it is yet another case where good will can achieve the opposite of what it intends when not imbued with the truth, in this case the truth about the sacramental nature of the postures at Mass and their meaning.

Catholic apologist Jimmy Akin, in an article about postures during the Our Father, agrees, and provides more documentation: The Holy See has been concerned about the laity unduly aping the priest at Mass, and in the 1997 Instruction on Collaboration , an unprecedented conjunction of Vatican dicasteries wrote: 6 § 2. To promote the proper identity (of various roles) in this area, those abuses which are contrary to the provisions of Canon 907 [i.e., "In the celebration of the Eucharist, deacons and lay persons are not permitted to say the prayers, especially the Eucharistic Prayer, nor to perform the actions which are proper to the celebrating priest."] are to be eradicated. In Eucharistic celebrations deacons and non-ordained members of the faithful may not pronounce prayers — e.g. especially the Eucharistic Prayer, with its concluding doxology — or any other parts of the liturgy reserved to the celebrant priest. Neither may deacons or non-ordained members of the faithful use gestures or actions which are proper to the same priest celebrant. It is a grave abuse for any member of the non-ordained faithful to "quasi preside" at the Mass while leaving only that minimal participation to the priest which is necessary to secure validity. This instruction, incidentally, was approved by John Paul II in forma specifica, meaning that the pope invested it with his own authority and is binding on us with the pope's authority and not merely the authority of the authoring congregations. Holy Fear

I sometimes wonder what happened to fear of God. There is a reporter on TV who does a small piece on one of

the more popular cable news programs in which he interviews people on the street. His questions are intended to

illicit answers that generally illustrate ignorance and are presumably viewed as funny at the individual’s expense.

Most often they are actually quite saddening. The responses give the distinct impression that many people live

life as if they carelessly float on the surface of a calm body of water with no recognition of dangers that lurk deep

below or the beauty that reigns above. There appears to be little fear of anything; not of evil or of God.

It’s a trap into which many of us fall, even if only for a time. We may be completely embracing the journey of

faith and recognize God as loving and merciful. Perhaps at the same time we should be careful to remember that

the most loving and merciful place to be is arrived through the tunnel of justice. Our ability to be in God’s house

is only possible with purification; purification which is based in love. In fact purgatory is described by St.

Catherine of Genoa as a “fire of love.”

So as to illustrate, most children experienced fear of the very parents they love so deeply and sometimes that love

involves punishment. Any relationship built on love contains an element of fear. Siblings may fear the loss of

friendship. Spouses may fear the loss of closeness. We become better people when our wrongs are made right

by the correction and redirection of one by whom we are loved. And then we experience contrition.

We are taught about two kinds of contrition; imperfect and perfect. Imperfect contrition is seeking God’s

forgiveness based on fear of eternal punishment. Perfect contrition is seeking God’s forgiveness based on love

for Him and a desire not to offend. Both are acceptable to God, but it seems that while imperfect contrition might

exist alone, perfect contrition exists in harmony with imperfect contrition which is often the foundation for the

more perfect form.

To not fear God is to make Him smaller than He is; to not realize the deep complexity of a universe beyond our

understanding, and recognize God as more mysterious than all the swirling galaxies combined. It is to put Him

off in the distance, as a child might do if a parent leaves home; the love fading, the fear gone.

If we choose to consider God as not present, we may cease to behave as we should, ignore reconciliation, and

move in the direction of painful consequences that are truly self-imposed. At the very least, living as if God is

not present leaves us in a constant state of seeking, and God in a constant state of calling.

“Are these feelings of fear and awe Christian feelings or not? . . . I say this, then, which I think no one can

reasonably dispute. They are a class of feelings we should have – yes, have to an intense degree – if we literally

had the sight of Almighty God; therefore they are the class of feelings which we shall have, if we realize His

presence. In proportion as we believe that He is present, we shall have them; and not to have them, is not to

realize, not to believe that He is present.” -John Henry Cardinal Newman

EVANGELISM IN ACTION: Realize that God is present, and let fear, awe and love become more intense.

Abortion and Adoption The number of would-be parents (of newborn babies) far outstrips the supply in America. Each year in the United States, about 51,000 American children are placed for adoption. In addition, about 6,500 foreign children are adopted by Americans, for a total of a little under 58,000 children adopted per year. Experts estimate somewhere between one and two million couples seek to adopt yearly. Every year, there are about 1.3 million abortions. Sadly, only 4% of women with unwanted pregnancies give their children up for adoption. Planned Parenthood often justifies abortion with the disingenuous slogan, “child a wanted child”. Every child is wanted, and wanted desperately!
