The Lessons

The people sit.

The First Lesson Proverbs 31:10-31 Reader A Reading from the book of Proverbs. A capable wife who can find?

She is far more precious than jewels. The heart of her husband trusts in her,

and he will have no lack of gain. She does him good, and not harm,

all the days of her life. She seeks wool and flax,

and works with willing hands. She is like the ships of the merchant,

she brings her food from far away. She rises while it is still night

and provides food for her household and tasks for her servant girls.

She considers a field and buys it; with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard.

She girds herself with strength, and makes her arms strong.

She perceives that her merchandise is profitable. Her lamp does not go out at night.

She puts her hands to the distaff, and her hands hold the spindle.

She opens her hand to the poor, and reaches out her hands to the needy.

She is not afraid for her household when it snows, for all her household are clothed in crimson.

She makes herself coverings; her clothing is fine linen and purple.

Her husband is known in the city gates, taking his seat among the elders of the land.

She makes linen garments and sells them; she supplies the merchant with sashes.

Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come.

She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.

She looks well to the ways of her household, and does not eat the bread of idleness.

Her children rise up and call her happy; her husband too, and he praises her:

"Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all."

Page 5: St. Martin's Episcopal Church Worship Bulletin - Sept. 23, 2012 - 10:15 a.m.

5

Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.

Give her a share in the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in the city gates.

Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

Psalm 1 (In unison) BCP 585

1

Happy are they who have not walked in the counsel of the wicked, * nor lingered in the way of sinners, nor sat in the seats of the scornful!

2

Their delight is in the law of the LORD, * and they meditate on his law day and night.

3

They are like trees planted by streams of water, bearing fruit in due season, with leaves that do not wither; * everything they do shall prosper.

4

It is not so with the wicked; * they are like chaff which the wind blows away.

5

Therefore the wicked shall not stand upright when judgment comes, * nor the sinner in the council of the righteous.

6

For the LORD knows the way of the righteous, * but the way of the wicked is doomed.

The Second Lesson James 3:13-4:3, 7-8a Reader A Reading from the book of James. Who is wise and understanding among you? Show by your good life that your works are done with gentleness born of wisdom. But if you have bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not be boastful and false to the truth. Such wisdom does not come down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, devilish. For where there is envy and selfish ambition, there will also be disorder and wickedness of every kind. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without a trace of partiality or hypocrisy. And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace for those who make peace.

Those conflicts and disputes among you, where do they come from? Do they not come from your cravings that are at war within you? You want something and do not have it; so you commit murder. And you covet something and cannot obtain it; so you engage in disputes and conflicts. You do not have, because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, in order to spend what you get on your pleasures.

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.

Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

Sequence Hymn 490 “I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light” Houston

The Holy Gospel Mark 9:30-37 Celebrant The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus and his disciples went on from there and passed through Galilee. He did not want anyone to know it; for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, "The Son of Man is to be betrayed into human hands, and they will kill him, and three days after being killed, he will rise again." But they did not understand what he was saying and were afraid to ask him.

Then they came to Capernaum; and when he was in the house he asked them, "What were you arguing about on the way?" But they were silent, for on the way they had

argued with one another who was the greatest. He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, "Whoever wants to be first must be last of all and servant of all." Then he took a little child and put it among them; and taking it in his arms, he said to them, "Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me."

Celebrant The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

Thanksgiving over the Water Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give him thanks and praise. Celebrant

We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through it you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In it your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life.

We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

At the following words, the Celebrant touches the water

Now sanctify this water, we pray you, by the power of your Holy Spirit, that those who here are cleansed from sin and born again may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior.

To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and for ever. People Amen.

Page 11: St. Martin's Episcopal Church Worship Bulletin - Sept. 23, 2012 - 10:15 a.m.

11

The Baptism The candidate is presented to the Celebrant.

Then the Celebrant places a hand on the person's head, marking on the forehead the sign of the cross using Chrism and saying

Sofia, you are sealed by the Holy Spirit in Baptism and marked as Christ's own for ever. People Amen.

The baptismal candle is lit from the Pascal candle and given to the baptized, with these words:

Celebrant Receive the Light of Christ. People Thanks be to God.

The Holy Communion

Offertory Anthem

Doxology 380, st. 3 Old Hundredth

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise him all creatures here below; Praise him above, ye heavenly host, Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving The people remain standing. The Celebrant faces them and sings or says

Then, facing the Holy Table, the Celebrant proceeds

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

Because in Jesus Christ our Lord you have received us as your sons and daughters, made us citizens of your kingdom, and given us the Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with angels and archangels and all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

Page 14: St. Martin's Episcopal Church Worship Bulletin - Sept. 23, 2012 - 10:15 a.m.

14

Holy, holy, holy Lord Sanctus S 129

We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world.

In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or to lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me."

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me."

Page 15: St. Martin's Episcopal Church Worship Bulletin - Sept. 23, 2012 - 10:15 a.m.

15

Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

Celebrant and People We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory;

The Celebrant continues

And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.

By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. People AMEN. Celebrant And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

Our Father, who art in heaven, as we forgive those hallowed be thy Name, who trespass against us. thy kingdom come, And lead us not into temptation, thy will be done, but deliver us from evil. on earth as it is in heaven. For thine is the kingdom, Give us this day our daily bread. and the power, and the glory, And forgive us our trespasses, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread The Celebrant breaks the consecrated Bread.

A period of silence is kept.

Fraction Anthem S 154

Facing the people, the Celebrant says the following Invitation

The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving. The Bread and Cup are given to the communicants with these words

The Body of Christ, the bread of heaven. Amen. The Blood of Christ, the cup of salvation. Amen.

All baptized Christians invited to receive Holy Communion when visiting the Episcopal Church. When you kneel at the altar rail, place one hand over the other to receive the bread in the palm of your hand, then lift it to your mouth. Gently hold the chalice by the base and guide it to your lips or you may hold the wafer and when the chalice comes before you, dip the wafer into the wine. Full Communion is received in either the bread or the wine individually.

Those who do not wish to receive are invited to come to the altar rail and kneel to receive a blessing. Cross your arms over your chest as a sign that you are covered by the cross of Christ and the priest will be glad to offer you a blessing.

If you are unable to come to the communion rail, please notify an usher, so that communion may be brought to you in the pew.

During the ministration of Communion, the following music is sung by all.

Communion Hymn “I Was There to Hear your Borning Cry”

I was there to hear your borning cry, I’ll be there when you are old. I rejoiced the day you were baptized, to see your life unfold. I was there when you were but a child with a faith to suit you well; I’ll be there in case you wander off and find where demons dwell. When you found the wonder of the world, I was there to cheer you on; You were raised to praise the living God, to whom you now belong. Should you find someone to share your time and you join your hearts as one, I’ll be there to make your verses rhyme from dusk till rising sun. In the middle ages of your life, not too old, no longer young, I’ll be there to guide you through the night, complete what I’ve begun. When the evening gently closes in and you shut your weary eyes, I’ll be there as I have always been with just one more surprise. I was there to hear your borning cry, I’ll be there when you are old. I rejoiced the day you were baptized, to see your life unfold. I was there when you were but a child with a faith to suit you well; I’ll be there in case you wander off and find where demons dwell.
