“I

pray you have felt the loving comfort of Christ as you awaited the day you could return to

his Real Presence in the Eucharist. And I rejoice with you and thank God today as we

move toward the gradual reopening of our parish communities.”

Archbishop Allen Vigneron

It is prudent that we prepare for a gradual “opening” of our churches for the celebration of Mass. The suggestions and guidelines

below are intended to assist pastors and parishioners in this task. The attention and cooperation of all the faithful in this preparation

process will bear fruit for the parish and allow us collectively to do our part to avoid a severe “second wave” of the virus.

THE DISPENSATION FROM THE SUNDAY OBLIGATION TO ATTEND MASS IS

GRANTED TO ALL THE FAITHFUL THROUGH SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 2020

Those older than 65 years old (the recommended CDC age), with a compromised health condition or caring for the sick in

any way, are encouraged to stay home. Anyone who is ill, has a temperature, cough, etc., should definitely stay home as an

act of justice to the whole community. Clergy with a respiratory infection of any kind should avoid celebrating public Masses

or administering the sacraments . The same applies to other ministers, e.g., deacons, lectors, ushers, etc. Although the faithful

are dispensed from their Sunday obligation to attend Mass, they must observe the Lord’s Day and are encouraged to spend time in prayer on

Sunday, meditating on the Lord’s passion, death, and resurrection (an excellent way to do this is through participating in a broadcast of the

Sunday Mass) or participating in a spiritual or corporal act of mercy.

Directives for Resumption of Public Masses

Masses offered indoors will be limited in attendance. Only 200 parishioners will be allowed to enter St. Mary, Cause of Our Joy for

each mass. Once the limit is met, people will be asked to attend another mass.

Cloth face coverings (masks) are to be worn by everyone approaching church and inside church (except for those under 2 years old).

 a. The priest celebrant and other ministers need not wear masks or gloves during the liturgy given they are more than 6’ from the

assembly during Mass.

Seating for the assembly: Mindful of the imposed allowed limitations and the physical layout of the church, parishes should clearly

designate where seating is permitted (such as seating people in alternating pews with a 2pew separation or seating in different

sections for different Masses).

 a. Those living in the same household may sit together without distancing

 b. For the distribution of Holy Communion, new patterns of approaching the altar might need to be configured to better allow for

proper distancing.

 c. Those in line for Holy Communion should maintain a 6’ distance between each other and those in the pews.

 d. To the extent possible, the priest and ministers (deacon, lector, servers) should remain 6’ apart from each other.

Collection: Baskets should not be passed from person to person. Other collection points (e.g. boxes) suitable for the faithful to drop

in their offerings should be provided.

Music: Music is certainly important to our liturgical celebrations as it attempts to lift the soul and express our faith. Each parish

needs to consider the following as we begin to return to Mass in limited numbers while observing the required physical distancing.

 a. Because the faithful will be wearing masks, singing on the part of the assembly might prove challenging and ineffective.

b. Health experts indicate that singing produces 610x more droplets from our mouths than recitation. Keeping singing for the

assembly to a minimum is advised and the congregation should not remove their masks to sing.

 c. If there is a “choir” present, it should be as small as possible with each member spaced about 10’ apart.

 d. If worship aids are produced, they are to be used for only one Mass and then disposed of to avoid any possible contamination.

 e. The music minister singing the entrance and communion antiphon is a good option to incorporate music in our liturgies.

Distribution of the Precious Blood to the faithful is suspended at this time, nor should the lay faithful receive by intinction.

MEMORARE

Remember, O most gracious Virgin

Mary, that never was it known

that anyone who fled to thy

protection, implored thy help or

sought thy intercession was left

unaided.

Inspired by this confidence, we fly

unto thee O Virgin of virgins, our

Mother. To thee do we come. Before

thee we stand, sinful and

sorrowful. O Mother of the Word

Incarnate, despise not our

petitions, but in your mercy hear

and answer us. Amen.

ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

My Jesus, I believe that you are

present in the Most Holy

Sacrament. I love you above all

things and I desire to receive you in

my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment

receive you sacramentally, come at

least spiritually into my heart. I

embrace you as if you were already

there and unite myself wholly to

you. Never permit me to be

separated from you. Amen.

NOTES FROM PAUL

These are exciting and

interesting times, I am glad that

we are finally back together this

weekend, but things will look a

little different around the parish.

Seating will be limited, and we

will all be wearing masks. Even if

you don’t believe that we need to

wear masks, we (Father and the

whole staff) ask that you please

wear them for the safety of all our

parishioners, and so that we can

follow what both church and civil

authorities are asking us to do. I

personally don’t want to ask

anyone to leave the Church

because they are not complying

with this request, I would rather

spend our time together enjoying

the Mass again.

For the time being we will not

be using the Cry Room during

Mass. We do not feel that the size

of the room will let us use it

safely. Because of this, I ask that

you try to be extra supportive of

families with small (or noisy)

children. Saturday Mass people, I

apologize for my kids ahead of

time. Father would also like to try

to move ahead with doing outside

masses this summer, so we may

ask you to bring your lawn chairs

each week, just in case the

weather is good. The main reason

for this is that there are no caps

on the number of people we have

outside. For inside Mass we are

now capped at 200 people, and we

don’t look forward to telling

anyone that we are out of seats.

I also want to remind everyone

that the obligation for weekend

Masses are still lifted until Sept.

6th, so feel free to stay home if it

makes you feel safer, if you are

sick, or you are at risk because of

some preexisting condition.

God bless you, and please be

gent le with your fe l low

parishioners at this time.

God Bless you,

Paul Zbytowski

Pastoral Associate/Evangelization

and Christian Service Coordinator

YOUTH MINISTRY NEWS

In the first Frozen movie, Olaf sings a song about summer where he just

doesn’t get it. Summer is not what he thinks it will be. I think we are all in

the same place right now. Summer is not what we think it will be. All of

our plans have changed and the sweet countdown to summer may look like

more of the same in the lives of those we journey with.

Project YM Sunday Night National Youth Group Meetings are completed

for now. The last 9 weeks of programming was fantastic and we are

grateful we had the opportunity to join. Project YM is getting ready to

announce their summer programming in a few weeks so stay tuned.

Our mission trip is canceled as well. Yes, it may look different than the

summer you (and Olaf) had originally planned, but God is still here and so

is your parish youth group family. There is no online or zoom meetings on

Sunday, May 24 or Monday, May 25 due to the Memorial Day

Holidays. Our next zoom meeting will be Monday, June 1 at 7:30 p.m.

Remember God Loves YOU, The Church Loves YOU, and YOU Matter.

Rev. Fr. Shafique and the Friends of Mary Cause of Our Joy,

Greetings and gratitude from St. Thomas the Apostle Minor Seminary

Faisalabad. We are living in a difficult time when the whole world is

facing the challenge of corona virus but the Easter

Season strengthens our faith that the One who

overcame death and sin will heal our world. Sharing

this moment of gratitude I would like to express my

sincere thanks to Fr. Shafique and the friends of St.

Mary, Cause of Our Joy for being a cause of our joy.

Thank you for being so thoughtful and sharing the

blessing of our Lord.

Our seminary was able to buy 25 bags of wheat

(each 40kgs). We appreciate it very much. I assure

you that as this wheat will nourish

our seminarians we will continue

praying for you for your spiritual

nourishment. Thank you very much

again for your generous sharing. Wish

you all the best and be assured of our

prayers.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

With Gratitude and Honor

Gracious God, on this Memorial Day

weekend, we remember and give thanks

for those who have given their lives in

the service of our country. When the

need was greatest, they stepped forward

and did their duty to defend the

freedoms that we enjoy, and to win the

same for others.

O, God you yourself have taught us that

no love is greater than that which gives

itself for another. These honored dead

gave the most precious gift they had, life

itself, for loved ones and neighbors, for

comrades and country and for us.

Help us to honor their memory by

caring for the family members they have

left behind, by ensuring that their

wounded comrades are properly cared

for, by being watchful caretakers of the

freedoms for which they gave their

lives, and by demanding that no other

young men and women follow them to a

soldier’s grave unless the reason is

worthy and the cause is just.

Holy One, help us to remember that

freedom is not free. There are times

when its cost is, indeed, dear. Never let

us forget those who paid so terrible a

price to ensure that freedom would be

our legacy.

Though their name may fade with the

passing of generations, may we never

forget what they have done. Help us to

be worthy of their sacrifice, O God, help

us to be worthy.

J. Veltri, S.J.
