Parish Information

Dear Friends in Christ:

Congratulations to the St. Mary – Holy Cross charter of the Knights of Columbus! The fish fries that they put on during Lent have

been hugely successful which many have found pleasing. They have come to find out that many folks besides the parishioners of

St. Mary-Holy Cross enjoy a good fish fry. The time that the fish fry is open for business has increased from the time that the fish

fries first began. This is a huge benefit to the Knights. The fish fry started out as a parish-only activity and now has been

expanded to the entire community of Elkhart and surrounding areas. The past fish fry fed 400 + people!

One of the things that is hugely beneficial to our parish is the community building and sense of fellowship that goes on at the fish

fries. This is an excellent opportunity to get to know people who you have seen in church but never had the opportunity for

conversation with. I see the Knights working hard together as a team and that sense of teamwork is contagious to all who attend.

Even men and women who are not Knights are involved in the efforts to make this a success. That involvement is shared by the

young people from the religious education group who scurry around cleaning up tables, serving drinks, and joyfully interacting

with those who are dining. It is easy to see and get involved in the energy and joy that the youth bring to the whole activity.

The financial proceeds from the fish fries are gifted to our parish and to other worthwhile and needy organizations in the area.

The financial benefits to the parish are substantial! Thank you to the Knights of Columbus, to all who serve with them, and to all

who come to enjoy the delicious fish fries. Blessings, Deacon Terry

2016 Annual Diocesan Appeal

This Appeal gives us the opportunity to act together as a Diocesan family and support programs and services no single individual or parish can offer.

Bishop Pates has sent a brochure and pledge card to each household. Please prayerfully consider what you are able to give and mail your pledge directly to the Diocese.

Every gift, regardless of the size, is vital to the success of the Appeal. Please join our Parish and the Diocese to continue God’s work of spirituality, charity and education. Thank you.

A Memorial Gift

We offer you the opportunity to memorialize a loved one by making a donation for flowers that will decorate our Churches this Easter season. A memorial list will be printed in a future bulletin as a remembrance of your loved ones. Donation envelopes are included with your tithe envelopes; additional flower envelopes are available in the vestibule. Please return your donation by Monday, March 21.

Any funds not used for flowers will be retained and used for Liturgical decorations throughout the year.

Before You Travel For Spring Break.....

Go to www.Masstimes.org or call 1-410-676-6000 for nationwide Mass times and Church locations.

Prayer Chain

If illness or a crisis strikes your family or friends, don't hesitate to contact us so members of our Parish may offer prayers for your needs. For requests or to participate in our prayer chain, please contact Barb at 515-367-2685 or [email protected].

If the request is not for yourself, please ask permission of the one it is for, to be on our prayer chain.

Presentation on Mercy

Please join Dr. Matt Halbach, Director of St. Joseph Education Center, next Saturday, March 12, from 2:30 until 4:00pm in the Social Hall, for a presentation on "Mercy" in conjunction with the Jubilee Year of Mercy declared by Pope Francis. This is also a great way to enter more deeply into the season of Lent, a time of repentance and conversion. After the presentation, Fr. Dan will be hearing confessions in the church for anyone wishing reconciliation. You will then be free to attend the Rosary before 5:00pm Mass, praying for the Catholics Come Home program. What a wonderful faith filled afternoon for our Parish!

You are invited and encouraged to attend!

Movie Afternoon

Join us to watch Jesus Christ Superstar on Sunday, March 20 at 4:00pm (3:30pm potluck snacks) in the Social Hall. Jesus is portrayed as a very ''human'' kind of person in this movie recounting the last week of His life and is from the surprising point of view Judas Iscariot. It is in a rock-opera format and dares to look at a classic religious story with a very different perspective.

Eucharistic Adoration

You are invited to Eucharistic Adoration Thursday, March 17, 7:00pm at St. Mary Church. This hour devoted to Jesus can be spent any way you wish; just enjoy the quietness of Adoration.

Women’s Bible Study

Are you interested in participating in a Bible study for women? Deacon Terry would be more than willing to set one up. Please call or email him if you would be interested in participating and then days and times will be worked out.

Bite-Sized Faith For Parents

How’s Lent Going?

We hope you will consider forming your personal faith by participating in ongoing offerings O Meditative Prayer Time O Scripture Prayer and Study O Stations of the CrossO ReconciliationOEucharistic Adoration...praying the Rosary... Please also take advantage of the reflection resources in the vestibule. They will help God’s presence in you become more of a reality in your everyday life and they may help God’s light shine through you to others in need. Rice Bowls

are also available. There are also many offerings for Lent sponsored by the Diocese, local Parishes and St. Joseph Educational Center; please see websites www.sjeciowa.org and www.dmdiocese.org for more information.

Catholics Come Home

How do I take the initiative to invite my son or daughter back to the Catholic Church? First: Pray. Then, share the faith “with gentleness and reverence” (1 Peter 3:15). We can share our faith through personal witness, through an invitation to Mass (maybe followed by breakfast or lunch) or maybe through the gift of a Catholic book or CD. Invite him or her to help you with a project you’re doing at the parish. Remain trusting in God’s love and in the Holy Spirit to guide us to serve our children as best we can.

Pray the Rosary With Us!

As part of our Catholics Come Home initiative, join us in praying the Rosary before each weekend Mass during Lent.

Lenten Reconciliation Service

We encourage you to attend this service next Sunday, March 13, 2:00pm at St. Mary. Lent is a time of purification and to seek the Lord’s forgiveness for our sins. Come experience the healing power of Christ!

We will have additional priests here to assist with individual confession.

Holy Thursday: Washing of Feet and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

We invite individuals to have their feet washed during our Holy Thursday Mass on March 24. We will have Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament until 11:00pm in the Social Hall following this Mass. A sign up for both of theses are in the vestibule at St. Mary and on the table at Holy Cross.

For Our Liturgical Ministers

You are invited to assist us with our Palm Sunday Masses, Holy Week services and Easter Masses. A sign up is in the vestibule at St. Mary and on the table at Holy Cross or call the Parish Office to volunteer. Thank you!

Chrism Mass

Join us for the Chrism Mass on Friday, March 18, 7:00pm at the Cathedral of St. Ambrose in Des Moines. This Diocesan celebration includes consecration and blessing of sacred oils to be used in sacraments and priests renewal of their priestly commitment. It is an inspiring event; all are encouraged to participate, in particular those involved in RCIA, as well as teenage confirmation candidates and sponsors. You will find this liturgy an uplifting experience of the larger Church.

“Maybe someone among us here is thinking, ‘My sin is so great, I am as far from God as the younger son in the parable (of the Prodigal Son); my unbelief is like that of Thomas. I don’t have the courage to go back, to believe that God can welcome me and that he is waing for me,

of all people.’ But God is indeed waing for you; he asks of you only the courage to go to him.”

– Pope Francis homily for the Mass for the Possession of the

Chair of the Bishop of Rome, April 7, 2013

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

Have Your Kids Outgrown Their Cleats?

Do you have softball, soccer, and/or baseball cleats that no longer fit? We will be having a cleat swap! We will be taking donations through Spring Break. A container can be found in the Ed Center. After Spring Break an announcement will be made to look through the cleats collected, with the hopes of finding a size that works for your child for spring ball.
